Esias 64

1 If you would open the heaven, trembling will take hold upon the mountains from you, and they shall melt,

Oh squarciassi tu pure i cieli, e scendessi! Dinanzi a te sarebbero scossi i monti.

2 as wax melts before the fire; and fire shall burn up the enemies, and your name shall be manifest among the adversaries: at your presence the nations shall be troubled,

Come il fuoco accende i rami secchi, come il fuoco fa bollir l’acqua, tu faresti conoscere il tuo nome ai tuoi avversari, e le nazioni tremerebbero dinanzi a te.

3 whenever you shall work gloriously; trembling from you shall take hold upon the mountains.

Quando facesti delle cose tremende che noi non aspettavamo, tu discendesti, e i monti furono scossi dinanzi a te.

4 From of old we have not heard, neither have our eyes seen a God beside you, and your works which you will perform to them that wait for mercy.

Mai s’era inteso, mai orecchio avea sentito dire, mai occhio aveva veduto che un altro Dio, fuori di te, agisse a pro di quegli che spera in lui.

5 For [these blessings] shall happen to them that work righteousness, and they shall remember your ways: behold, you were angry and we have sinned; therefore we have erred,

Tu vai incontro a chi gode nel praticar la giustizia, a chi, camminando nelle tue vie, si ricorda di te; ma tu ti sei adirato contro di noi, perché abbiamo peccato; e ciò ha durato da tanto tempo… sarem noi salvati?

6 and we are all become as unclean, and all our righteousness as a filthy rag: and we have fallen as leaves because of our iniquities; thus the wind shall carry us [away].

Tutti quanti siam diventati come l’uomo impuro e tutta la nostra giustizia come un abito lordato; tutti quanti appassiamo come una foglia, e le nostre iniquità ci portan via come il vento.

7 And there is none that calls upon your name, or that remembers to take hold on you: for you have turned your face away from us, and have delivered us up because of our sins.

Non v’è più alcuno che invochi il tuo nome, che si risvegli per attenersi a te; poiché tu ci hai nascosta la tua faccia, e ci lasci consumare dalle nostre iniquità.

8 And now, O Lord, you are our Father, and we are clay, all [of us] the work of your hands.

Nondimeno, o Eterno, tu sei nostro padre; noi siamo l’argilla; tu, colui che ci formi; e noi siam tutti l’opera delle tue mani.

9 Be not very angry with us, and remember not our sins for ever; but now look on [us], for we are all your people.

Non t’adirare fino all’estremo, o Eterno! e non ti ricordare dell’iniquità in perpetuo; ecco, guarda, ten preghiamo; noi siamo tutti tuo popolo.

10 The city of your holiness has become desolate, Sion has become as a wilderness, Jerusalem a curse.

Le tue città sante sono un deserto; Sion è un deserto, Gerusalemme, una desolazione.

11 The house, our sanctuary, and the glory which our fathers blessed, has been burnt with fire: and all our glorious things have gone to ruin.

La nostra casa santa e magnifica, dove i nostri padri ti celebrarono, è stata preda alle fiamme, e tutto quel che avevamo di più caro è stato devastato.

12 And for all these things you, O Lord, has withholden, yourself, and been silent, and have brought us very low.

Dinanzi a queste cose ti conterrai tu, o Eterno? tacerai tu e ci affliggerai fino all’estremo?
