Esias 47
1 Come down, sit on the ground, O virgin daughter of Babylon: sit on the ground, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for you shall no more be called tender and luxurious.
Descends, et assieds-toi dans la poudre, Vierge, fille de Babel! Assieds-toi sur la terre, sans trône, fille des Chaldéens!
2 Take a millstone, grind meal: remove your veil, uncover your white hairs, make bare the leg, pass through the rivers.
Car désormais on ne t'appellera plus molle et délicate! Prends le moulin, et mouds de la farine! ôte ton voile! relève les pans de ta robe! découvre tes jambes! passe à gué les fleuves! Découvre ta nudité!
3 Your shame shall be uncovered, your reproaches shall be brought to light: I will exact of you due vengeance, I will no longer deliver you to men.
oui, ta nudité sera vue; je veux tirer vengeance, et ne donner de trêve à personne.
4 Your deliverer is the Lord of hosts, the Holy One of Israel is his name.
Notre rédempteur (l'Éternel des armées est son nom), le Saint d'Israël [le dit]:
5 Sit you down pierced with woe, go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: you shall no more be called the strength of a kingdom.
Assieds-toi muette, et fuis dans les ténèbres, fille des Chaldéens, car on ne t'appellera plus désormais la maîtresse des empires!
6 I have been provoked with my people; you have defiled mine inheritance: I gave them into your hand, but you did not extend mercy to them: you made the yoke of the aged man very heavy,
Je fus irrité contre mon peuple, je profanai mon héritage, et les livrai à ton bras; tu n'eus pour eux nulle pitié! sur un vieillard tu appesantis ton joug avec excès.
7 and said, I shall be a princess for ever: you did not perceive these things in your heart, nor did you remember the latter end.
Et tu disais: « A jamais je serai maîtresse! » tu allais jusqu'à ne pas réfléchir à ces choses, et à ne point considérer la fin.
8 But now hear these words, you luxurious one, [who are] the one that sits [at ease], that is secure, that says in her heart, I am, and there is not another; I shall not sit a widow, neither shall I know bereavement.
Et maintenant, entends-le, voluptueuse, sur ton trône pleine de sécurité, qui dis en ton cœur: « Moi et nulle autre que moi! je ne serai point dans le veuvage, et je n'éprouverai point la privation d'enfants. »
9 But now these two things shall come upon you suddenly in one day, the loss of children and widowhood shall come suddenly upon you, for your sorcery, for the strength of your enchantments,
Eh bien! l'un et l'autre t'arrivera soudain le même jour, la privation d'enfants et le veuvage, ils t'arriveront complets, malgré le nombre de tes enchantements et la multitude excessive de tes charmes.
10 for your trusting in wickedness: for you said, I am, and there is not another: know you, the understanding of these things and your harlotry shall be your shame; for you said in your heart, I am, and there is not another.
Tu te fiais en ta malice, tu disais: « Personne ne me voit! » Ta sagesse et ta prudence! ce sont elles qui t'égarent; et tu dis dans ton cœur: « Moi et nulle autre que moi! »
11 And destruction shall come upon you, and you shall not be aware; [there shall be a] pit, and you shall fall into it: and grief shall come upon you, and you shall not be able to be clear; and destruction shall come suddenly upon you, and you shall not know.
Aussi t'arrivera-t-il un malheur que tu ne sauras conjurer, et une calamité fondra sur toi que tu ne pourras expier, et la ruine fondra sur toi soudain, avant que tu t'en doutes.
12 Stand now with your enchantments, and with the abundance of your sorcery, which you have learned from your youth; if you can be profited.
Poursuis donc tes conjurations, et tes nombreux enchantements dont tu t'es occupée depuis ta jeunesse! peut-être pourras-tu trouver des ressources, peut-être inspirer la terreur!
13 You are wearied in your counsels. Let now the astrologers of the heaven stand and deliver you, let them that see the stars tell you what is about to come upon you.
Tu es fatiguée du nombre de tes consultations! qu'ils se lèvent donc pour te secourir, ceux qui découpent le ciel en régions, qui inspectent les astres, indiquent aux nouvelles lunes ce qui doit t'arriver.
14 Behold, they all shall be burnt up as sticks in the fire; neither shall they at all deliver their life from the flame. Because you have coals of fire, sit you upon them;
Voici, ils sont comme le chaume; le feu les brûle, ils ne sauveront pas leur vie des flammes: il n'en restera pas un charbon pour se chauffer, ni un feu pour s'asseoir auprès.
15 these shall be your help. You have wearied yourself with traffic from your youth: every man has wandered to his own home, but you shall have no deliverance.
Tels seront pour toi ceux envers qui tu te donnes tant de peine, ceux avec qui tu eus affaire dès ta jeunesse, ils s'égarent chacun de son côté, et personne ne te sauve.
