Ecclesiastes 4

1 So I returned, and saw all the oppressions that were done under the sun: and behold the tear of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of them that oppressed them was power; but they had no comforter:

Puis je me suis mis à regarder toutes les injustices qui se font sous le soleil; et voilà les larmes de ceux à qui on fait tort, et ils n'ont point de consolation; et la force est du côté de ceux qui leur font tort, et ils n'ont point de consolateur.

2 and I praised all the dead that had already died more than the living, as many as are alive until now.

C'est pourquoi j'estime plus les morts qui sont déjà morts, que les vivants qui sont encore vivants.

3 Better also than both these is he who has not yet been, who has not seen all the evil work that is done under the sun.

Même j'estime celui qui n'a pas encore été, plus heureux que les uns et les autres; car il n'a pas vu les mauvaises actions qui se font sous le soleil.

4 And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This is also vanity and waywardness of spirit.

Puis j'ai regardé tout le travail, et l'adresse de chaque métier, [et j'ai vu] que l'un porte envie à l'autre; cela aussi est une vanité, et un rongement d'esprit.

5 The fool folds his hands together, and eats his own flesh.

Le fou tient ses mains ployées, et se consume soi-même, [en disant]:

6 Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of trouble and waywardness of spirit.

Mieux vaut plein le creux de la main, avec repos, que pleines les deux paumes, [avec] travail et rongement d'esprit.

7 So I returned, and saw vanity under the sun.

Puis je me suis mis à regarder une [autre] vanité sous le soleil;

8 There is one [alone], and there is not a second; yes, he has neither son nor brother: yet there is no end to all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with wealth; and for whom do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? this is also vanity, and an evil trouble.

C'est qu'il y a tel qui est seul, et qui n'a point de second, qui aussi n'a ni fils ni frère, et qui cependant ne met nulle fin à son travail; même son œil ne voit jamais assez de richesses, [et il ne dit point en lui-même]: Pour qui est-ce que je travaille, et que je prive mon âme du bien? Cela aussi [est] une vanité, et une fâcheuse occupation.

9 Two [are] better than one, [seeing] they have a good reward for their labor.

Deux valent mieux qu'un; car ils ont un meilleur salaire de leur travail.

10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls, and there is not a second to lift him up.

Même si l'un des deux tombe, l'autre relèvera son compagnon; mais malheur à celui qui est seul; parce qu'étant tombé, il n'aura personne pour le relever.

11 Also if two should lie together, they also get heat: but how shall one be warmed [alone?]

Si deux aussi couchent ensemble, ils en auront [plus] de chaleur; mais celui qui est seul, comment aura-t-il chaud?

12 And if one should prevail against [him], the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord shall not be quickly broken.

Que si quelqu'un force l'un ou l'autre, les deux lui pourront résister; et la corde à trois cordons ne se rompt pas sitôt.

13 Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who knows not how to take heed any longer.

Un enfant pauvre et sage vaut mieux qu'un Roi vieux et insensé, qui ne sait ce que c'est que d'être averti.

14 For he shall come forth out of the house of the prisoners to reign, because [he] also that was in his kingdom has become poor.

Car il y a tel qui sort de prison pour régner; et de même il y a tel qui étant né Roi, devient pauvre.

15 I saw all the living who were walking under the sun, with the second youth who shall stand up in each one's place.

J'ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil, [suivre] le fils qui est la seconde personne [après le Roi ], et qui doit être en sa place.

16 There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them: and the last shall not rejoice in him: for this also is vanity and waywardness of spirit.

Tout ce peuple-là, [savoir] tous ceux qui ont été devant ceux-ci, est sans fin; ces derniers aussi ne se réjouiront point de celui-ci; certainement cela aussi est une vanité, et un rongement d'esprit.
