Ecclesiastes 4

1 So I returned, and saw all the oppressions that were done under the sun: and behold the tear of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of them that oppressed them was power; but they had no comforter:

Je me suis tourné et j’ai vu toutes les oppressions qui se commettent sous le soleil: et voici que les opprimés sont dans les larmes, et personne ne les console! Ils sont en butte à la violence de leurs oppresseurs, et personne ne les console!

2 and I praised all the dead that had already died more than the living, as many as are alive until now.

Et j’ai proclamé les morts qui sont déjà morts plus heureux que les vivants qui sont encore vivants,

3 Better also than both these is he who has not yet been, who has not seen all the evil work that is done under the sun.

et plus heureux que les uns et les autres celui qui n’est pas encore arrivé à l’existence, qui n’a pas vu les mauvaises actions qui se commettent sous le soleil.

4 And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This is also vanity and waywardness of spirit.

J’ai vu que tout travail et que toute habileté dans un ouvrage n’est que jalousie contre un homme de la part de son prochain: cela encore est vanité et poursuite du vent.

5 The fool folds his hands together, and eats his own flesh.

L’insensé se croise les mains, et mange sa propre chair.

6 Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of trouble and waywardness of spirit.

Mieux vaut une main pleine de repos, que les deux pleines de labeur et de poursuite du vent.

7 So I returned, and saw vanity under the sun.

Je me suis tourné et j’ai vu une autre vanité sous le soleil.

8 There is one [alone], and there is not a second; yes, he has neither son nor brother: yet there is no end to all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with wealth; and for whom do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? this is also vanity, and an evil trouble.

Tel homme est seul et n’a pas de second, il n’a ni fils ni frère, et pourtant il n’y a pas de fin à tout son travail, et ses yeux ne sont jamais rassasiés de richesses: « Pour qui donc est-ce que je travaille, et que je prive mon âme de jouissance? » Cela encore est vanité, et mauvaise occupation.

9 Two [are] better than one, [seeing] they have a good reward for their labor.

Mieux vaut vivre à deux que solitaire; il y a pour les deux un bon salaire dans leur travail;

10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls, and there is not a second to lift him up.

car s’ils tombent, l’un peut relever son compagnon. Mais malheur à celui qui est seul, et qui tombe sans avoir un second pour le relever!

11 Also if two should lie together, they also get heat: but how shall one be warmed [alone?]

De même, si deux couchent ensemble, ils se réchauffent; mais un homme seul, comment aurait-il chaud!

12 And if one should prevail against [him], the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord shall not be quickly broken.

Et si quelqu’un maîtrise celui qui est seul, les deux pourront lui résister, et le fil triplé ne rompt pas facilement.

13 Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who knows not how to take heed any longer.

Mieux vaut un jeune homme pauvre et sage qu’un roi vieux et insensé qui ne sait plus écouter les avis;

14 For he shall come forth out of the house of the prisoners to reign, because [he] also that was in his kingdom has become poor.

car il sort de prison pour régner, quoiqu’il soit né pauvre dans son royaume.

15 I saw all the living who were walking under the sun, with the second youth who shall stand up in each one's place.

J’ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil près du jeune homme qui s’élevait à la place du vieux roi.

16 There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them: and the last shall not rejoice in him: for this also is vanity and waywardness of spirit.

Il n’y avait pas de fin à toute cette foule, à tous ceux à la tête desquels il était. Et cependant les descendants ne se réjouiront pas à son sujet. Cela encore est vanité et poursuite du vent.
