Deuteronomy 28

1 And it shall come to pass, if you will indeed hear the voice of the Lord your God, to observe and do all these commands, which I charge you this day, that the Lord your God shall set you on high above all the nations of the earth;

Et si tu es docile à la voix de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, pour t'appliquer à pratiquer tous ses commandements que je te prescris en ce jour, l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donnera la prééminence sur toutes les nations de la terre,

2 and all these blessings shall come upon you, and shall find you. If you will indeed hear the voice of the Lord your God,

et toutes ces bénédictions t'arriveront et viendront te trouver, pourvu que tu sois docile à la voix de l'Éternel, ton Dieu;

3 blessed [shall] you [be] in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field.

tu seras béni à la ville et tu seras béni aux champs;

4 Blessed shall be the offspring of your body, and the fruits of your land, and the herds of your oxen, and the flocks of your sheep.

tu seras béni dans la fécondité de tes flancs, dans la fécondité de ton sol, et dans la fécondité de ton bétail, la progéniture de tes vaches et les portées de tes brebis.

5 Blessed shall be your barns, and your stores.

La bénédiction remplira tes paniers et ta maie.

6 Blessed shall you be in your coming in, and blessed shall you be in your going out.

Tu seras béni, quand tu sortiras, béni quand tu entreras.

7 The Lord deliver your enemies that withstand you utterly broken before your face: they shall come out against you one way, and they shall flee seven ways from before you.

L'Éternel te livrera défaits tes ennemis levés contre toi; par une seule route ils s'avanceront contre toi et par sept routes ils s'enfuiront devant toi.

8 The Lord send upon you his blessing in your barns, and on all on which you shall put your hand, in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

Au commandement de l'Éternel tu auras la bénédiction dans tes greniers, et dans toutes tes entreprises, et Il te bénira dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne.

9 The Lord raise you up for himself a holy people, as he sware to your fathers; if you will hear the voice of the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways.

L'Éternel te constituera son peuple saint, comme Il te l'a juré, si tu gardes les commandements de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et si tu marches dans ses voies.

10 And all the nations of the earth shall see you, that the name of the Lord is called upon you, and they shall stand in awe of you.

Et tous les peuples de la terre verront que tu es appelé du nom de l'Éternel, et ils te craindront.

11 And the Lord your God shall multiply you for good in the offspring of your body, and in the offspring of your cattle, and in the fruits of your land, on your land which the Lord sware to your fathers to give to you.

Et l'Éternel te comblera de biens par la fécondité de tes flancs, et par la fécondité de ton bétail et par la fécondité de ton sol dans le pays que l'Éternel a juré à tes pères de te donner.

12 May the Lord open to you his good treasure, the heaven, to give rain to your land in season: may he bless all the works of your hands: so shall you lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.

L'Éternel t'ouvrira son trésor d'abondance, le Ciel, pour te donner à son époque la pluie propre à ton pays et bénir tout le travail de ta main; et tu prêteras à beaucoup de nations, mais n'emprunteras pas toi-même.

13 The Lord your God make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall then be above and you shall not be below, if you will listen to the voice of the Lord your God, in all things that I charge you this day to observe.

Et l'Éternel fera de toi la tête et non pas la queue, et tu ne seras qu'en haut et non point en bas, si tu obéis aux commandements de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, que je te prescris en ce jour, pour les garder et les pratiquer,

14 You shall not turn aside from any of the commandments, which I charge you this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

et si tu ne t'écartes de tous les ordres que je vous intime en ce jour, ni à droite ni à gauche, pour suivre d'autres dieux et les servir.

15 But it shall come to pass, if you will not listen to the voice of the Lord your God, to observe all his commandments, as many as I charge you this day, then all these curses shall come on you, and overtake you.

Mais si tu n'es pas docile à la voix de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, pour t'appliquer à la pratique de tous ses commandements et ses statuts que je te prescris en ce jour, toutes ces malédictions s'accompliront pour toi, et t'atteindront.

16 Cursed [shall] you [be] in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field.

Tu seras maudit dans la ville, et maudit dans les champs.

17 Cursed shall be your barns and your stores.

Maudits seront tes paniers et ta maie.

18 Cursed shall be the offspring of your body, and the fruits of your land, the herds of your oxen, and the flocks of your sheep.

Maudit seras-tu quant à la fécondité de tes flancs, à la fécondité de ton sol, à la progéniture de tes vaches et aux portées de tes brebis;

19 Cursed shall you be in your coming in, and cursed shall you be in your going out.

maudit lorsque tu entreras, maudit lorsque tu sortiras.

20 The Lord send upon you lack, and famine, and consumption of all things on which you shall put your hand, until he shall have utterly destroyed you, and until he shall have consumed you quickly because of your evil devices, because you have forsaken me.

L'Éternel enverra contre toi la malédiction, l'alarme et la ruine à toutes tes entreprises que tu formeras, jusqu'à ce que tu sois détruit et promptement perdu, à cause de la méchanceté de tes actions, pour m'avoir abandonné.

21 The Lord cause the pestilence to cleave to you, until he shall have consumed you off the land into which you go to inherit it.

L'Éternel mettra la peste à ta poursuite, jusqu'à ce qu'il t'ait exterminé du pays dont tu viens faire la conquête.

22 The Lord strike you with distress, and fever, and cold, and inflammation, and blighting, and paleness, and they shall pursue you until they have destroyed you.

L'Éternel t'affligera de marasme et de fièvre, et d'inflammation, de sécheresse et de brûlure, de gangrène et de nielle, qui s'acharneront sur toi jusqu'à ce que tu périsses.

23 And you shall have over your head a sky of brass, and the earth under you shall be iron.

Et le ciel qui est au-dessus de ta tête, sera d'airain, et la terre que tu as sous les pieds, de fer.

24 The Lord your God make the rain of your land dust; and dust shall come down from heaven, until it shall have destroyed you, and until it shall have quickly consumed you.

Au lieu de pluie sur ton pays l'Éternel enverra de la poussière et du sable qui tomberont du ciel jusqu'à ce que tu sois détruit.

25 The Lord give you up for slaughter before your enemies: you shall go out against them one way, and flee from their face seven ways; and you shall be a dispersion in all the kingdoms of the earth.

L'Éternel te livrera défait à tes ennemis; par une route unique tu t'avanceras contre eux, et par sept routes tu t'enfuiras devant eux, et tu seras en butte aux vexations de tous les royaumes, de la terre.

26 And your dead men shall be food to the birds of the sky, and to the beasts of the earth; and there shall be none to scare them away.

Et ton cadavre sera la proie de tous les oiseaux des Cieux et de toutes les bêtes de la terre, que personne n'effarouchera.

27 The Lord strike you with the botch of Egypt in the seat, and with a malignant scab, and itch, so that you can not be healed.

L'Éternel t'affligera de l'ulcère d'Egypte, et de tumeurs, et de dartres, et de gale, dont tu ne pourras guérir.

28 The Lord strike you with insanity, and blindness, and astonishment of mind.

L'Éternel t'affligera de délire et de cécité, et d'égarement d'esprit.

29 And you shall grope at mid-day, as a blind man would grope in the darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways; and then you shall be unjustly treated, and plundered continually, and there shall be no helper.

Et tu iras à tâtons en plein midi, comme l'aveugle tâtonne dans l'obscurité, et tu ne trouveras pas le succès sur ta route; tu ne seras qu'opprimé et pillé tous les jours, et tu n'auras aucun libérateur.

30 you shall take a wife, and another man shall have her; you shall build a house, and you shall not dwell in it; you shall plant a vineyard, and shall not gather the grapes of it.

Tu te fianceras à une femme et un autre homme entrera dans son lit; tu bâtiras une maison et tu ne l'habiteras pas; tu planteras une vigne et tu n'en goûteras pas les fruits.

31 Your calf [shall be] slain before you, and you shall not eat of it; your ass shall be violently taken away from you, and shall not be restored to you: your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you shall have no helper.

Ton bœuf sera égorgé sous tes yeux, et tu n'en mangeras pas; ton âne sera enlevé à ta face, et ne te reviendra pas; tes brebis seront livrées à tes ennemis, et tu n'auras aucun auxiliaire.

32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another nation, and your eyes wasting away shall look for them: your hand shall have no strength.

Tes fils et tes filles seront donnés à un autre peuple, tes yeux le voyant et se consumant à regarder tout le jour du côté où ils sont; et tu n'auras pas la force en main.

33 A nation which you know not shall eat the produce of your land, and all your labors; and you shall be injured and crushed always.

Le produit de ton sol et de tout ton labeur sera consommé par un peuple non connu de toi, et tu ne seras qu'opprimé et écrasé tous les jours.

34 And you shall be distracted, because of the sights of your eyes which you shall see.

Tu tomberas en démence à l'aspect de ce que tu verras de tes yeux.

35 The Lord strike you with an evil sore, on the knees and the legs, so that you shall not be able to be healed from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.

L'Éternel t'affligera aux genoux et aux jambes d'ulcères malins et incurables, de la plante des pieds au sommet de la tête.

36 The Lord carry away you and your princes, whom you shall set over you, to a nation which neither you nor your fathers know; and you shall there serve other gods, wood and stone.

L'Éternel te chassera toi et ton roi que tu auras préposé sur toi, chez une nation inconnue à toi et à tes pères; et là, tu serviras d'autres dieux, du bois et de la pierre.

37 An you shall be there for a wonder, and a parable, and a tale, among all the nations, to which the Lord your God shall carry you away.

Et tu exciteras la stupeur, tu passeras en proverbe et donneras lieu aux sarcasmes chez tous les peuples où l'Éternel te mènera.

38 You shall carry forth much seed into the field, and you shall bring in little, because the locust shall devour it.

Tu ensemenceras abondamment le terrain et tu récolteras peu; car la sauterelle le broutera.

39 You shall plant a vineyard, and dress it, and shall not drink the wine, neither shall you delight yourself with it, because the worm shall devour it.

Tu planteras et cultiveras des vignes, mais tu ne boiras ni ne récolteras de vin, car les vers les consumeront.

40 You shall have olive trees in all your borders, and you shall not anoint you with oil, because your olive shall utterly cast [its fruit].

Tu auras des oliviers dans tout ton territoire, mais tu ne t'oindras pas d'huile, car tes oliviers se dépouilleront.

41 You shall beget sons and daughters, and they shall not be [your], for they shall depart into captivity.

Tu engendreras des fils et des filles, mais ils ne seront pas à toi, car ils iront en captivité.

42 All your trees and the fruits of your land shall the blight consume.

De tous tes arbres, et des fruits de ton sol le grillon s'emparera.

43 The stranger that is within you shall get up very high, and you shall come down very low.

L'étranger qui sera parmi vous s'élèvera au-dessus de toi toujours plus haut, et toi, tu descendras toujours plus bas.

44 He shall lend to you, and you shall not lend to him: he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

C'est lui qui te prêtera, et toi, tu ne lui prêteras pas; il deviendra la tête et tu deviendras la queue.

45 And all these curses shall come upon you, and shall pursue you, and shall overtake you, until he shall have consumed you, and until he shall have destroyed you; because you did not listen to the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commands, and his ordinances which he has commanded you.

Et toutes ces malédictions s'accompliront sur toi et te poursuivront et t'atteindront jusqu'à ce que tu sois détruit, pour n'avoir pas obéi à la voix de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, en gardant ses commandements et ses statuts qu'il t'a prescrits,

46 And [these things] shall be signs in you, and wonders among your seed for ever;

et elles resteront sur toi et sur ta postérité comme un signe et un exemple éternellement.

47 because you did not serve the Lord your God with gladness and a good heart, because of the abundance of all things.

Pour n'avoir pas servi l'Éternel, ton Dieu, avec joie et de bon cœur au milieu de l'abondance de toutes choses,

48 And you shall serve your enemies, which the Lord will send forth against you, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and you shall wear upon your neck a yoke of iron until he shall have destroyed you.

tu serviras tes ennemis que l'Éternel enverra contre toi, souffrant de la faim, de la soif, du dénuement et de la disette de toutes choses, et il chargera ton col d'un joug de fer jusqu'à ce qu'il t'ait détruit.

49 The Lord shall bring upon you a nation from the extremity of the earth, like the swift flying of an eagle, a nation whose voice you shall not understand;

L'Éternel fera lever contre toi un peuple lointain, de l'extrémité de la terre, rapide comme l'aigle qui vole, un peuple dont tu n'entendras pas la langue,

50 a nation bold in countenance, which shall not respect the person of the aged and shall not pity the young.

peuple au visage farouche, sans respect pour le vieillard, sans pitié pour le jeune homme.

51 And it shall eat up the young of your cattle, and the fruits of your land, so as not to leave to you corn, wine, oil, the herds of your oxen, and the flocks of your sheep, until it shall have destroyed you;

Il dévorera la progéniture de tes bestiaux et les fruits de ton sol jusqu'à ce que tu sois détruit, ne te laissant ni blé, ni moût, ni huile, ni la progéniture de tes vaches ni les portées de tes brebis jusqu'à ce qu'il t'ait fait périr:

52 and have utterly crushed you in your cities, until the high and strong walls be destroyed, in which you trust, in all your land; and it shall afflict you in your cities, which he has given to you.

il t'assiégera dans toutes tes Portes jusqu'à la chute de tes hautes et fortes murailles sur lesquelles tu te fies, dans tout ton pays, et il t'assiégera dans toutes tes Portes, dans tout ton pays que t'a donné l'Éternel, ton Dieu.

53 And you shall eat the fruit of your body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters, all that he has given you, in your straitness and your affliction, with which your enemy shall afflict you.

Et, dans la détresse et l'angoisse où te réduiront tes ennemis, tu te nourriras du fruit de tes entrailles, de la chair de tes fils et de tes filles que t'aura donnés l'Éternel, ton Dieu.

54 He that is tender and very delicate within you shall look with an evil eye upon his brother, and the wife in his bosom, and the children that are left, which may have been left to him;

Le plus amolli de tes hommes, et le plus délicat regardera de mauvais œil son frère et la femme qui est entre ses bras, et ceux de ses fils qui auront survécu,

55 so as [not] to give to one of them of the flesh of his children, whom he shall eat, because of his having nothing left him in your straitness, and in your affliction, with which your enemies shall afflict you in all your cities.

pour ne pas partager avec l'un d'eux la chair de ses fils dont il se nourrira, parce qu'on ne lui aura rien laissé dans la détresse et l'angoisse où t'auront réduit tes ennemis dans toutes tes Portes.

56 And she that is tender and delicate among you, whose foot has not assayed to go upon the earth for delicacy and tenderness, shall look with an evil eye on her husband in her bosom, and her son and her daughter,

La plus amollie de tes femmes et la plus délicate qui ne tentait pas de poser la plante de son pied sur la terre par excès de délicatesse et de mollesse, regardera de mauvais œil le mari qui est entre ses bras, et son fils et sa fille,

57 and her offspring that comes out between her feet, and the child which she shall bear; for she shall eat them because of the lack of all things, secretly in your straitness, and in your affliction, with which your enemy shall afflict you in your cities.

pour ne point partager le placenta sorti d'entre ses pieds, et les enfants dont elle est accouchée; car elle les mangera par disette de toutes choses en secret, dans la détresse et l'angoisse où l'auront réduite tes ennemis dans tes Portes.

58 If you will not listen to do all the words of this law, which have been written in this book, to fear this glorious and wonderful name, the Lord your God;

Si tu ne t'appliques à pratiquer tous les préceptes de cette Loi transcrits dans ce livre, pour craindre ce magnifique et redoutable Nom, l'Éternel, ton Dieu,

59 then the Lord shall magnify your plagues, and the plagues of your seed, great and wonderful plagues, and evil and dwelling diseases.

l'Éternel vous frappera de fléaux extraordinaires, toi et ta postérité, de fléaux grands et soutenus, et de maladies malignes et persistantes;

60 And he shall bring upon you all the evil pain of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cleave to you.

et Il ramènera sur toi toutes les infirmités de l'Egypte qui te font peur, afin qu'elles s'attachent à toi.

61 And the Lord shall bring upon you every sickness, and every plague that is not written, and every one that is written in the book of this law, until he shall have destroyed you.

Toutes les maladies et toutes les plaies aussi, non consignées dans le volume de cette Loi, l'Éternel les attirera sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu sois détruit.

62 And you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of the sky in multitude; because you did not listen to the voice of the Lord your God.

Et vous survivrez en petit nombre, au lieu d'être comme maintenant aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel, parce que tu n'auras pas obéi à la voix de l'Éternel, ton Dieu.

63 And it shall come to pass that as the Lord rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you, so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you; and you shall be quickly removed from the land, into which you go to inherit it.

Et de même que l'Éternel mettait sa joie à votre égard à vous faire du bien et à vous agrandir, de même l'Éternel mettra sa joie à votre égard à vous perdre et à vous détruire, et vous serez arrachés du pays dont tu viens faire la conquête.

64 And the Lord your God shall scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other; and you shall there serve other gods, wood and stone, which you have not known, nor your fathers.

Et l'Éternel te disséminera parmi tous les peuples d'un bout de la terre à l'autre, et là tu serviras d'autres dieux inconnus à toi et à tes pères, du bois et de la pierre.

65 Moreover among those nations he will not give you quiet, neither by any means shall the sole of your foot have rest; and the Lord shall give you there another and a misgiving heart, and failing eyes, and a wasting soul.

Et parmi ces peuples tu ne seras pas tranquille, tu n'auras pas où reposer la plante de tes pieds, et l'Éternel t'y donnera un cœur inquiet, des yeux qui s'éteignent, une âme qui se consume.

66 And your life shall be in suspense before your eyes; and you shall be afraid by day and by night, and you shall have no assurance of your life.

Et devant toi ta vie sera toujours en suspens, tu seras alarmé la nuit et le jour, et ne seras pas sûr de vivre.

67 In the morning you shall say, Would it were evening! and in the evening you shall say, Would it were morning! for the fear of your heart with which you shall fear, and for the sights of your eyes which you shall see.

Le matin tu diras: Ah! si le soir était là! et le soir tu diras: Ah! si le matin était là! par l'effet des alarmes qui alarmeront ton cœur, et du spectacle que tu verras de tes yeux.

68 And the Lord shall bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said, You shall not see it again; and you shall be sold there to your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and none shall buy you.

Et l'Éternel te ramènera en Egypte sur des navires, par le chemin duquel je te disais: tu ne le reverras plus, et là vous vous vendrez à vos ennemis comme esclaves et comme servantes; et il n'y aura point d'acheteurs.
