Kings IV 6
1 And the sons of the prophets said to Elisaie, Behold now, the place wherein we dwell before you is too narrow for us.
さて預言者のともがらはエリシャに言った、「わたしたちがあなたと共に住んでいる所は狭くなりましたので、
2 Let us go, we pray you, to Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and make for ourselves a habitation there.
わたしたちをヨルダンに行かせ、そこからめいめい一本ずつ材木を取ってきて、わたしたちの住む場所を造らせてください」。エリシャは言った、「行きなさい」。
3 And he said, Go. And one of them said gently, Come with your servants. And he said, I will go.
時にそのひとりが、「どうぞあなたも、しもべらと一緒に行ってください」と言ったので、エリシャは「行きましょう」と答えた。
4 And he went with them, and they came to Jordan, and began to cut down wood.
そしてエリシャは彼らと一緒に行った。彼らはヨルダンへ行って木を切り倒したが、
5 And behold, one was cutting down a beam, and the axe head fell into the water: and he cried out, Alas! master: and it was hidden.
ひとりが材木を切り倒しているとき、おのの頭が水の中に落ちたので、彼は叫んで言った。「ああ、わが主よ。これは借りたものです」。
6 And the man of God said, Where did it fall? and he showed him the place: and he broke off a stick, and threw it in there, and the iron came to the surface.
神の人は言った、「それはどこに落ちたのか」。彼がその場所を知らせると、エリシャは一本の枝を切り落し、そこに投げ入れて、そのおのの頭を浮ばせ、
7 And he said, Take it up to yourself. And he stretched out his hand, and took it.
「それを取りあげよ」と言ったので、その人は手を伸べてそれを取った。
8 And the king of Syria was at war with Israel: and he consulted with his servants, saying, I will encamp in such a place.
かつてスリヤの王がイスラエルと戦っていたとき、家来たちと評議して「しかじかの所にわたしの陣を張ろう」と言うと、
9 And Elisaie sent to the king of Israel, saying, Take heed that you pass not by that place, for the Syrians are hidden there.
神の人はイスラエルの王に「あなたは用心して、この所をとおってはなりません。スリヤびとがそこに下ってきますから」と言い送った。
10 And the king of Israel sent to the place which Elisaie mentioned to him, and saved himself thence not once or twice.
それでイスラエルの王は神の人が自分に告げてくれた所に人をつかわし、警戒したので、その所でみずからを防ぎえたことは一、二回にとどまらなかった。
11 And the mind of the king of Syria was very much disturbed concerning this thing; and he called his servants, and said to them, Will you not tell me who betrays me to the king of Israel?
スリヤの王はこの事のために心を悩まし、家来たちを召して言った、「われわれのうち、だれがイスラエルの王と通じているのか、わたしに告げる者はないか」。
12 And one of his servants said, Nay, my Lord, O king, for Elisaie the prophet that is in Israel reports to the king of Israel all the words whatever you may say in your bedchamber.
ひとりの家来が言った、「王、わが主よ、だれも通じている者はいません。ただイスラエルの預言者エリシャが、あなたが寝室で語られる言葉でもイスラエルの王に告げるのです」。
13 And he said, Go, see where this man [is], and I will send and take him. And they sent word to him, saying, Behold, [he is] in Dothaim.
王は言った、「彼がどこにいるか行って捜しなさい。わたしは人をやって彼を捕えよう」。時に「彼はドタンにいる」と王に告げる者があったので、
14 And he sent there horses, and chariots, and a mighty host: and they came by night, and compassed about the city.
王はそこに馬と戦車および大軍をつかわした。彼らは夜のうちに来て、その町を囲んだ。
15 And the servant of Elisaie rose up early and went out; and, behold, a host compassed the city, and horses and chariots: and the servant said to him, O master, what shall we do?
神の人の召使が朝早く起きて出て見ると、軍勢が馬と戦車をもって町を囲んでいたので、その若者はエリシャに言った、「ああ、わが主よ、わたしたちはどうしましょうか」。
16 And Elisaie said, Fear not, for they who are with us [are] more than they that are with them.
エリシャは言った、「恐れることはない。われわれと共にいる者は彼らと共にいる者よりも多いのだから」。
17 And Elisaie prayed, and said, Lord, open, I pray you, the eyes of the servant, and let him see. And the Lord opened his eyes, and he saw: and, behold, the mountain [was] full of horses, and there were chariots of fire round about Elisaie.
そしてエリシャが祈って「主よ、どうぞ、彼の目を開いて見させてください」と言うと、主はその若者の目を開かれたので、彼が見ると、火の馬と火の戦車が山に満ちてエリシャのまわりにあった。
18 And they came down to him; and he prayed to the Lord, and said, Strike, I pray you, this people with blindness. And he struck them with blindness, according to the word of Elisaie.
スリヤびとがエリシャの所に下ってきた時、エリシャは主に祈って言った、「どうぞ、この人々の目をくらましてください」。するとエリシャの言葉のとおりに彼らの目をくらまされた。
19 And Elisaie said to them, This [is] not the city, and this [is] not the way: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek. And he led them away to Samaria.
そこでエリシャは彼らに「これはその道ではない。これはその町でもない。わたしについてきなさい。わたしはあなたがたを、あなたがたの尋ねる人の所へ連れて行きましょう」と言って、彼らをサマリヤへ連れて行った。
20 And it came to pass when they entered into Samaria, that Elisaie said, Open, I pray you, O Lord, their eyes, and let them see. And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
彼らがサマリヤにはいったとき、エリシャは言った、「主よ、この人々の目を開いて見させてください」。主は彼らの目を開かれたので、彼らが見ると、見よ、彼らはサマリヤのうちに来ていた。
21 And the king of Israel said to Elisaie, when he saw them, Shall I [not] verily strike them, [my] father?
イスラエルの王は彼らを見て、エリシャに言った、「わが父よ、彼らを撃ち殺しましょうか。彼らを撃ち殺しましょうか」。
22 And he said, You shall not strike them, unless you would strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow: set bread and water before them, and let them eat and drink, and depart to their master.
エリシャは答えた、「撃ち殺してはならない。あなたはつるぎと弓をもって、捕虜にした者どもを撃ち殺すでしょうか。パンと水を彼らの前に供えて食い飲みさせ、その主君のもとへ行かせなさい」。
23 And he set before them a great feast, and they ate and drank: and he dismissed them and they departed to their master. And the bands of Syria came no longer into the land of Israel.
そこで王は彼らのために盛んなふるまいを設けた。彼らが食い飲みを終ると彼らを去らせたので、その主君の所へ帰った。スリヤの略奪隊は再びイスラエルの地にこなかった。
24 And it came to pass after this, that the son of Ader king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up, and besieged Samaria.
この後スリヤの王ベネハダデはその全軍を集め、上ってきてサマリヤを攻め囲んだので、
25 And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was [valued] at fifty pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung at five pieces of silver.
サマリヤに激しいききんが起った。すなわち彼らがこれを攻め囲んだので、ついに、ろばの頭一つが銀八十シケルで売られ、はとのふん一カブの四分の一が銀五シケルで売られるようになった。
26 And the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, and a woman cried to him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.
イスラエルの王が城壁の上をとおっていた時、ひとりの女が彼に呼ばわって、「わが主、王よ、助けてください」と言ったので、
27 And he said to her, Unless the Lord help you, whence shall I help you? from the corn-floor, or from the wine-press?
彼は言った、「もし主があなたを助けられないならば、何をもってわたしがあなたを助けることができよう。打ち場の物をもってか、酒ぶねの物をもってか」。
28 And the king said to her, What is [the matter] with you? And the woman said to him, This [woman] said to me, Give your son, and we will eat him today, and we will eat my son to-morrow.
そして王は女に尋ねた、「何事なのですか」。彼女は答えた、「この女はわたしにむかって『あなたの子をください。わたしたちは、きょうそれを食べ、あす、わたしの子を食べましょう』と言いました。
29 So we boiled my son, and ate him; and I said to her on the second day, Give your son, and let us eat him: and she has hidden her son.
それでわたしたちは、まずわたしの子を煮て食べましたが、次の日わたしが彼女にむかって『あなたの子をください。わたしたちはそれを食べましょう』と言いますと、彼女はその子を隠しました」。
30 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel heard the words of the woman, [that] he tore his garments; and he passed by on the wall, and the people saw sackcloth within upon his flesh.
王はその女の言葉を聞いて、衣を裂き、王は城壁の上をとおっていたが、民が見ると、その身に荒布を着けていた
31 And he said, God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisaie shall stand upon him this day.
そして王は言った「きょう、シャパテの子エリシャの首がその肩の上にすわっているならば、神がどんなにでもわたしを罰してくださるように」。
32 And Elisaie was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him; and [the king] sent a man before him: before the messenger came to him, he also said to the elders, Do you see that this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? See, as soon as the messenger shall have come, shut the door, and forcibly detain him at the door: [is] not the sound of his master's feet behind him?
さてエリシャはその家に座していたが、長老たちもきて彼と共に座した。王は自分の所から人をつかわしたが、エリシャはその使者がまだ着かないうちに長老たちに言った、「あなたがたは、この人を殺す者がわたしの首を取るために、人をつかわすのを見ますか。その使者がきたならば、戸を閉じて、内に入れてはなりません。彼のうしろに、その主君の足音がするではありませんか」。
33 While he was yet speaking with them, behold, a messenger came to him: and he said, Behold, this evil [is] of the Lord; why should I wait for the Lord any longer?
彼がなお彼らと語っているうちに、王は彼のもとに下ってきて言った、「この災は主から出たのです。わたしはどうしてこの上、主を待たなければならないでしょうか」。
