Matthew 11
1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
イエスは十二弟子にこのように命じ終えてから、町々で教えまた宣べ伝えるために、そこを立ち去られた。
2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
さて、ヨハネは獄中でキリストのみわざについて伝え聞き、自分の弟子たちをつかわして、
3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
イエスに言わせた、「『きたるべきかた』はあなたなのですか。それとも、ほかにだれかを待つべきでしょうか」。
4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
イエスは答えて言われた、「行って、あなたがたが見聞きしていることをヨハネに報告しなさい。
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
盲人は見え、足なえは歩き、らい病人はきよまり、耳しいは聞え、死人は生きかえり、貧しい人々は福音を聞かされている。
6 And blessed is [he], whosoever shall not be offended in me.
わたしにつまずかない者は、さいわいである」。
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
彼らが帰ってしまうと、イエスはヨハネのことを群衆に語りはじめられた、「あなたがたは、何を見に荒野に出てきたのか。風に揺らぐ葦であるか。
8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft [clothing] are in kings’ houses.
では、何を見に出てきたのか。柔らかい着物をまとった人か。柔らかい着物をまとった人々なら、王の家にいる。
9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
では、なんのために出てきたのか。預言者を見るためか。そうだ、あなたがたに言うが、預言者以上の者である。
10 For this is [he], of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
『見よ、わたしは使をあなたの先につかわし、あなたの前に、道を整えさせるであろう』と書いてあるのは、この人のことである。
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
あなたがたによく言っておく。女の産んだ者の中で、バプテスマのヨハネより大きい人物は起らなかった。しかし、天国で最も小さい者も、彼よりは大きい。
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
バプテスマのヨハネの時から今に至るまで、天国は激しく襲われている。そして激しく襲う者たちがそれを奪い取っている。
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
すべての預言者と律法とが預言したのは、ヨハネの時までである。
14 And if ye will receive [it], this is Elias, which was for to come.
そして、もしあなたがたが受けいれることを望めば、この人こそは、きたるべきエリヤなのである。
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
耳のある者は聞くがよい。
16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
今の時代を何に比べようか。それは子供たちが広場にすわって、ほかの子供たちに呼びかけ、
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
『わたしたちが笛を吹いたのに、あなたたちは踊ってくれなかった。弔いの歌を歌ったのに、胸を打ってくれなかった』と言うのに似ている。
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
なぜなら、ヨハネがきて、食べることも、飲むこともしないと、あれは悪霊につかれているのだ、と言い、
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
また人の子がきて、食べたり飲んだりしていると、見よ、あれは食をむさぼる者、大酒を飲む者、また取税人、罪人の仲間だ、と言う。しかし、知恵の正しいことは、その働きが証明する」。
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
それからイエスは、数々の力あるわざがなされたのに、悔い改めることをしなかった町々を、責めはじめられた。
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
「わざわいだ、コラジンよ。わざわいだ、ベツサイダよ。おまえたちのうちでなされた力あるわざが、もしツロとシドンでなされたなら、彼らはとうの昔に、荒布をまとい灰をかぶって、悔い改めたであろう。
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
しかし、おまえたちに言っておく。さばきの日には、ツロとシドンの方がおまえたちよりも、耐えやすいであろう。
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. (Hadēs g86)
ああ、カペナウムよ、おまえは天にまで上げられようとでもいうのか。黄泉にまで落されるであろう。おまえの中でなされた力あるわざが、もしソドムでなされたなら、その町は今日までも残っていたであろう。 (Hadēs g86)
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
しかし、あなたがたに言う。さばきの日には、ソドムの地の方がおまえよりは耐えやすいであろう」。
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
そのときイエスは声をあげて言われた、「天地の主なる父よ。あなたをほめたたえます。これらの事を知恵のある者や賢い者に隠して、幼な子にあらわしてくださいました。
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
父よ、これはまことにみこころにかなった事でした。
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and [he] to whomsoever the Son will reveal [him.]
すべての事は父からわたしに任せられています。そして、子を知る者は父のほかにはなく、父を知る者は、子と、父をあらわそうとして子が選んだ者とのほかに、だれもありません。
28 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
すべて重荷を負うて苦労している者は、わたしのもとにきなさい。あなたがたを休ませてあげよう。
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
わたしは柔和で心のへりくだった者であるから、わたしのくびきを負うて、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたの魂に休みが与えられるであろう。
30 For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.
わたしのくびきは負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである」。
