John 4
1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
Quand le Seigneur eut appris que les pharisiens avaient entendu dire qu'il faisait et baptisait plus de disciples que Jean,
2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples, )
— toutefois ce n'était pas Jésus lui-même qui baptisait, mais c'étaient ses disciples, —
3 He left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee.
il quitta la Judée et retourna en Galilée.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
Or, il fallait qu'il passât par la Samarie.
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Il arriva donc à une ville de Samarie, nommée Sichar, près du champ que Jacob avait donné à Joseph, son fils.
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with [his] journey, sat thus on the well: [and] it was about the sixth hour.
Là se trouvait le puits de Jacob. Jésus, fatigué de la route, s'assit auprès du puits; c'était environ la sixième heure.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
Une femme samaritaine vint puiser de l'eau. Jésus lui dit: Donne-moi à boire.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
Car ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter des vivres.
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
La femme samaritaine lui répondit: Comment, toi qui es Juif, me demandes-tu à boire, à moi qui suis une femme samaritaine? — Les Juifs, en effet, n'ont pas de relations avec les Samaritains. —
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
Jésus répondit et lui dit: Si tu connaissais le don de Dieu, et qui est celui qui te dit: Donne-moi à boire, — tu lui aurais demandé toi-même à boire, et il t'aurait donné une eau vive.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
La femme lui dit: Seigneur, tu n'as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond; d'où aurais-tu donc cette eau vive?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
Es-tu plus grand que Jacob, notre père, qui nous a donné ce puits et qui en a bu lui-même, aussi bien que ses fils et ses troupeaux?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
Jésus lui répondit: Quiconque boit de cette eau aura encore soif;
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
La femme lui dit; Seigneur, donne-moi de cette eau, afin que je n'aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus ici pour puiser de l'eau.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
Jésus lui dit: Va, appelle ton mari, et reviens.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
La femme répondit: Je n'ai point de mari. Jésus reprit: Tu as raison de dire: Je n'ai point de mari;
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
car tu as eu cinq maris, et celui que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari; en cela tu as dit vrai.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
La femme lui dit: Seigneur, je vois que tu es un prophète!
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne; et vous dites, vous, que le lieu où il faut adorer est à Jérusalem.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
Jésus lui répondit: Femme, crois-moi; l'heure vient où vous n'adorerez plus le Père ni sur cette montagne, ni à Jérusalem.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
Vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez pas. Nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons; car le salut vient des Juifs.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
Mais l'heure vient, et elle est déjà venue, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité: ce sont là les adorateurs que le Père demande.
24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.
Dieu est Esprit, et il faut que ceux qui l'adorent, l'adorent en esprit et en vérité.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
La femme lui répondit: Je sais que le Messie — c'est-à-dire le Christ — doit venir; quand il sera venu, il nous annoncera toutes choses.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he.]
Jésus lui dit: Je le suis, moi qui te parle.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
A ce moment, ses disciples arrivèrent, et ils furent surpris de ce qu'il parlait avec une femme. Pourtant, aucun d'eux ne lui dit: Que lui demandes-tu? ou: Pourquoi parles-tu avec elle?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
La femme laissa donc sa cruche et s'en alla à la ville; et elle dit aux gens de l'endroit:
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait: ne serait-ce pas le Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
Alors ils sortirent de la ville et allèrent vers Jésus.
31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
Cependant les disciples insistaient auprès de lui, en disant: Maître, mange.
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
Il leur répondit: J'ai pour me nourrir un aliment que vous ne connaissez pas.
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him [ought] to eat?
Les disciples se disaient donc l'un à l'autre: Quelqu'un lui aurait-il apporté à manger?
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Jésus leur dit: Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé, et d'accomplir son oeuvre.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and [then] cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
Ne dites-vous pas qu'il y a encore quatre mois jusqu'à la moisson? Mais moi, je vous dis: Levez les yeux et regardez les campagnes, déjà blanches pour la moisson.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
Déjà le moissonneur reçoit son salaire et amasse du fruit pour la vie éternelle, afin que le semeur et le moissonneur en aient ensemble de la joie. (aiōnios g166)
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
Car c'est ici qu'on peut dire en toute vérité: Autre est le semeur, autre le moissonneur.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
Je vous ai envoyés moissonner où vous n'aviez pas travaillé; d'autres ont travaillé, et vous, vous êtes entrés dans leur travail.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
Plusieurs des Samaritains de cette ville crurent en lui, à cause de la parole de la femme qui lui avait rendu ce témoignage: Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait.
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
Les Samaritains, étant donc venus vers lui, le prièrent de demeurer chez eux; et il y demeura deux jours.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
Il y en eut beaucoup plus qui crurent en lui après avoir entendu sa parole.
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard [him] ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
Et ils disaient à la femme: Ce n'est plus à cause de ce que tu nous as dit, que nous croyons; car nous l'avons entendu nous-mêmes, et nous savons que c'est lui qui est véritablement le Sauveur du monde.
43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
Après ces deux jours, Jésus partit de là et s'en alla en Galilée;
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
— car il avait déclaré lui-même qu'un prophète n'est point honoré dans sa patrie. —
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilæans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
Lorsqu'il fut arrivé en Galilée, il fut bien reçu des Galiléens qui avaient vu tout ce qu'il avait fait à Jérusalem pendant la fête; car ils étaient allés, eux aussi, à la fête.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
Il vint donc de nouveau à Cana en Galilée, où il avait changé l'eau en vin. Or, il y avait à Capernaüm un officier royal, dont le fils était malade.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
Cet officier, ayant appris que Jésus était venu de Judée en Galilée, alla le trouver et le pria de descendre pour guérir son fils, qui était mourant.
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
Jésus lui dit: Si vous ne voyez des miracles et des prodiges, vous ne croyez pas!
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
L'officier royal lui répondit: Seigneur, descends, avant que mon enfant ne meure!
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
Jésus lui dit: Va, ton fils vit! Cet homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite, et il s'en alla.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told [him], saying, Thy son liveth.
Comme il était déjà en route, ses serviteurs vinrent à sa rencontre et lui dirent: Ton fils vit.
52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
Il leur demanda à quelle heure il s'était trouvé mieux. Ils lui répondirent: Hier, à la septième heure, la fièvre l'a quitté.
53 So the father knew that [it was] at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
Le père reconnut que c'était à cette heure-là que Jésus lui avait dit: Ton fils vit. Et il crut, lui et toute sa maison.
54 This [is] again the second miracle [that] Jesus did, when he was come out of Judæa into Galilee.
Ce nouveau miracle fut le second que fit Jésus, à son retour de Judée en Gahlée.
