John 11
1 Now a certain [man] was sick, [named] Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
Il y avait un homme malade, nommé Lazare, qui était de Béthanie, le village de Marie et de Marthe, sa soeur.
2 (It was [that] Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
Marie était celle qui oignit le Seigneur d'une huile parfumée, et qui lui essuya les pieds avec ses cheveux; et c'était son frère Lazare qui était malade.
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
Les soeurs envoyèrent donc dire à Jésus: Seigneur, voici que celui que tu aimes est malade.
4 When Jesus heard [that], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
Jésus, ayant entendu ces paroles, dit: Cette maladie n'est pas à la mort, mais elle est pour la gloire de Dieu, afin que le Fils de Dieu soit glorifié par elle.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
Or, Jésus aimait Marthe, et sa soeur, et Lazare.
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
Lorsqu'il eut appris que celui-ci était malade, il resta encore deux jours dans le lieu où il se trouvait.
7 Then after that saith he to [his] disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.
Après cela, il dit à ses disciples: Retournons en Judée.
8 [His] disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
Les disciples lui dirent: Maître, hier encore les Juifs cherchaient à te lapider, et tu retournes au milieu d'eux!
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
Jésus répondit: N'y a-t-il pas douze heures dans le jour? Si quelqu'un marche pendant le jour, il ne bronche point, parce qu'il voit la lumière de ce monde.
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
Mais si quelqu'un marche pendant la nuit, il bronche, parce qu'il n'a pas la lumière.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
Il parla ainsi, puis il ajouta: Lazare, notre ami, s'est endormi; mais je vais le réveiller.
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
Ses disciples lui dirent: Seigneur, s'il dort, il sera guéri.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
Or, Jésus avait dit cela de la mort de Lazare; mais ils crurent qu'il parlait du sommeil ordinaire.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
Jésus leur dit alors ouvertement: Lazare est mort.
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
Et je me réjouis pour vous de ce que je n'étais pas là, afin que vous croyiez; mais allons auprès de lui.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
Sur quoi Thomas, appelé Didyme, dit aux autres disciples: Allons-y, nous aussi, pour mourir avec lui!
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had [lain] in the grave four days already.
Jésus, à son arrivée, trouva qu'il y avait déjà quatre jours que Lazare était dans le tombeau.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
Or, Béthanie n'était éloignée de Jérusalem que d'environ quinze stades.
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
Plusieurs des Juifs étaient venus auprès de Marthe et de Marie pour les consoler de la mort de leur frère.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat [still] in the house.
Quand Marthe apprit que Jésus arrivait, elle alla au-devant de lui; mais Marie était restée assise à la maison.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
Marthe dit à Jésus: Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort;
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give [it] thee.
et maintenant même, je sais que tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te l'accordera.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
Jésus lui dit: Ton frère ressuscitera.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Marthe lui répondit: Je sais qu'il ressuscitera, à la résurrection, au dernier jour.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
Jésus lui dit: Je suis la résurrection et la vie; celui qui croit en moi vivra quand même il serait mort.
Et quiconque vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela? (aiōn g165)
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
Elle lui répondit: Oui, Seigneur, je crois que tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, celui qui devait venir dans le monde.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
Quand elle eut dit ces paroles, elle s'en alla, appela en secret Marie, sa soeur, et lui dit: Le Maître est là, et il t'appelle.
29 As soon as she heard [that], she arose quickly, and came unto him.
Dès que Marie eut entendu cette parole, elle se leva promptement et alla vers lui.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
Or Jésus n'était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il était à l'endroit ou Marthe était venue à sa rencontre.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
Quand les Juifs, qui étaient avec Marie dans la maison et qui la consolaient, la virent se lever et sortir si promptement, ils la suivirent, croyant qu'elle allait au tombeau pour y pleurer.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
Mais Marie, étant arrivée à l'endroit où se trouvait Jésus, se jeta à ses pieds, dès qu'elle l'aperçut, et elle lui dit: Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort!
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
Lorsque Jésus vit qu'elle pleurait, et que les Juifs qui étaient venus avec elle pleuraient aussi, il frémit en son esprit et il fut tout troublé.
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
Puis il demanda: Où l'avez-vous mis? Ils lui répondirent: Seigneur, viens et vois.
35 Jesus wept.
Alors Jésus pleura.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
Les Juifs disaient donc: Voyez comme il l'aimait!
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
Et quelques-uns d'entre eux dirent: Lui qui a ouvert les yeux de l'aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas faire aussi que cet homme ne mourût pas?
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
Alors Jésus, frémissant de nouveau en lui-même, vint au tombeau: c'était une grotte à l'entrée de laquelle une pierre avait été placée.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been [dead] four days.
Jésus dit: Otez la pierre. Marthe, la soeur du mort répondit: Seigneur, il sent déjà; car il est là depuis quatre jours.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
Jésus reprit: Ne t'ai-je pas dit que, si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu?
41 Then they took away the stone [from the place] where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up [his] eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
Ils ôtèrent donc la pierre. Alors Jésus leva les yeux au ciel et dit: Père, je te rends grâces de ce que tu m'as exaucé!
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
Je savais bien que tu m'exauces toujours; mais je parle ainsi à cause de cette foule qui m'entoure, afin qu'elle croie que c'est toi qui m'as envoyé.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
Quand il eut dit cela, il cria d'une voix forte: Lazare, sors!
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
Le mort sortit, ayant les mains et les pieds liés de bandelettes, et le visage enveloppé d'un suaire. Jésus leur dit: Déliez-le, et laissez-le aller.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
Plusieurs des Juifs qui étaient venus auprès de Marie, et qui avaient vu ce que Jésus avait fait, crurent en lui.
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
Mais quelques-uns d'entre eux allèrent trouver les pharisiens, et ils leur rapportèrent ce qu'avait fait Jésus.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
Alors les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens réunirent le Sanhédrin et dirent: Que ferons-nous? Cet homme, en effet, opère beaucoup de miracles.
48 If we let him thus alone, all [men] will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
Si nous le laissons faire, tout le monde croira en lui; et les Romains viendront détruire et ce lieu et notre nation.
49 And one of them, [named] Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
Mais l'un d'entre eux, Caïphe, qui était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, leur dit: Vous n'y entendez rien!
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
Vous ne considérez pas qu'il vaut mieux pour vous qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple, et que toute la nation ne périsse pas.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
Or, il ne dit pas cela de lui-même, mais, étant souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus devait mourir pour la nation;
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
et non seulement pour la nation, mais aussi pour rassembler en un seul corps les enfants de Dieu dispersés.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
Depuis ce jour-là, ils formèrent le projet de le faire mourir.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
C'est pourquoi Jésus ne se montrait plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs; mais il s'en alla dans la contrée voisine du désert, à une ville appelée Éphraïm; et il y séjourna avec ses disciples.
55 And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
La Pâque des Juifs était proche, et beaucoup de gens du pays montèrent à Jérusalem, avant la Pâque, pour se purifier.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
Ils cherchaient donc Jésus; et, se tenant dans le temple, ils se disaient les uns aux autres: Que vous en semble? Ne viendra-t-il pas à la fête?
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew [it], that they might take him.
Or, les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens avaient donné des ordres pour que, si quelqu'un savait où se trouvait Jésus, il le déclarât, afin qu'on pût s'emparer de lui.
