Ezra 4
1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
Khi các kẻ thù nghe tin những người Giu-đa và Bên-gia-min đi đày đã trở về và đang xây lại Đền Thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên,
2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye [do; ] and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
thì họ đến nói với Xô-rô-ba-bên và các trưởng tộc: “Xin để chúng tôi cộng tác với các ông, vì chúng tôi cũng thờ Đức Chúa Trời các ông. Chúng tôi vẫn dâng lễ vật lên Ngài từ ngày Ê-sạt-ha-đôn, vua A-sy-ri đem chúng tôi đến đây.”
3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
Nhưng Xô-rô-ba-bên, Giê-sua, và các trưởng tộc Ít-ra-ên đáp: “Không. Các ông không được dự phần vào công tác này. Chỉ người Ít-ra-ên chúng tôi mới có nhiệm vụ xây cất Đền Thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu mà thôi, đúng theo sắc lệnh của Vua Si-ru, nước Ba Tư.”
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
Vì muốn làm nản lòng người Giu-đa trong việc xây cất đền thờ,
5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
dân trong xứ mướn các mưu sĩ bàn ra để phá hoại công tác. Họ làm như vậy suốt triều Si-ru, và luôn cho đến thời Vua Đa-ri-út cai trị Ba Tư.
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they [unto him] an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
Đến lúc A-suê-ru lên ngôi, họ viết một bản cáo trạng tố cáo người Giu-đa và người Giê-ru-sa-lem.
7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter [was] written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
Dưới đời Vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe, nước Ba Tư, Bích-lam, Mít-rê-đát, Ta-bê-ên, và những người cộng tác với họ viết sớ tâu lên Ạt-ta-xét-xe. Sớ viết bằng tiếng A-ram, được dịch ra cho vua.
8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
Tổng trấn Rê-hum và Thư ký Sim-sai cũng viết sớ dâng lên Vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe chống đối Giê-ru-sa-lem, như sau:
9 Then [wrote] Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, [and] the Elamites,
Tổng trấn Rê-hum và Thư ký Sim-sai với sự đồng tình của các phán quan và chính quyền của người Đinh-ni, người A-phát-sa, người Tạt-bên, người A-phát, người Ạt-kê,
10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest [that are] on this side the river, and at such a time.
và những sắc dân khác được nhà quyền quý cao trọng Ô-náp-ba đem đến cho lập nghiệp ở Sa-ma-ri và các nơi khác phía tây Sông Ơ-phơ-rát.
11 This [is] the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, [even] unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
Nội dung sớ này như sau: “Vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe vạn tuế! Chúng tôi là đầy tớ của vua ở phía tây Sông Ơ-phơ-rát.
12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls [thereof], and joined the foundations.
Xin tâu vua rõ về việc bọn Do Thái từ Ba-by-lôn về Giê-ru-sa-lem đang xây lại thành ấy, một thành độc ác, chuyên phản loạn. Chúng nó đã đặt lại nền móng đền thờ và sẽ sớm hoàn thành vách thành.
13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up [again, then] will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and [so] thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
Xin vua hiểu rằng, nếu thành này được cất lại, vách thành được xây xong, chúng nó sẽ không nạp cống, đóng thuế cho vua nữa; ngân khố triều đình sẽ suy giảm.
14 Now because we have maintenance from [the king’s] palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
Vì chúng tôi hưởng lộc triều đình, không thể khoanh tay đứng nhìn việc vua bị xúc phạm như vậy, nên mới dâng sớ này.
15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city [is] a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
Vua tra xét sách sử đời các tiên đế, thì biết rằng thành này là một thành hay phản nghịch. Đúng thế, thành này bị phá đổ hoang tàn, chính vì dân thành liên tục nổi loạn chống các vua, các nước từ bao nhiêu đời.
16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded [again], and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
Xin vua biết cho rằng, nếu thành này được cất lại, vách thành được xây xong, thì vua sẽ mất phần đất phía bên này Sông Ơ-phơ-rát.”
17 [Then] sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and [to] Shimshai the scribe, and [to] the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and [unto] the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
Vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe trả lời như sau: “Gửi Tổng trấn Rê-hum, Thư ký Sim-sai, các viên chức khác ở Sa-ma-ri, và các miền phía tây Sông Ơ-phơ-rát: Chúc các người bình an.
18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
Tờ sớ các người dâng lên đã được đọc cho ta nghe.
19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and [that] rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
Ta đã ra lệnh tra cứu, và thấy rằng từ xưa thành này vẫn nổi lên chống các vua. Sự phản nghịch và xúi giục dấy loạn thường xảy ra tại đó.
20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all [countries] beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
Ngoài ra, tại Giê-ru-sa-lem đã có những vua lớn, cai trị cả miền bên kia sông, thu cống phẩm và các loại thuế (thuế quan, thuế đường, cầu, chợ).
21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until [another] commandment shall be given from me.
Vì thế, ta ban lệnh chấm dứt việc xây cất này, cho đến khi có lệnh mới.
22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
Các người cẩn trọng thi hành, đừng để cho hoàng triều phải bị thiệt hại.”
23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter [was] read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
Sau khi đọc chiếu của Vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe, Rê-hum, Sim-sai, và các viên chức khác vội vàng đến Giê-ru-sa-lem, dùng cường quyền và bạo lực buộc người Giu-đa chấm dứt việc kiến thiết.
24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which [is] at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Vậy công tác xây cất Đền Thờ Đức Chúa Trời tại Giê-ru-sa-lem đình lại cho đến năm thứ hai triều Vua Đa-ri-út, nước Ba Tư.
