Esther 1
1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this [is] Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, [over] an hundred and seven and twenty provinces: )
C’était au temps d’Assuérus, — de cet Assuérus qui régna, depuis l’Inde jusqu’à l’Ethiopie, sur cent vingt-sept provinces, —
2 [That] in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which [was] in Shushan the palace,
au temps où le Roi Assuérus était assis sur son trône royal à Suse, la capitale.
3 In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, [being] before him:
La troisième année de son règne, il fit un festin à tous ses princes et à tous ses ministres. Les chefs de l’armée des Perses et des Mèdes, les grands et les gouverneurs des provinces furent réunis en sa présence;
4 When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, [even] an hundred and fourscore days.
c’est alors qu’il déploya devant eux la riche splendeur de son royaume et l’éclatante magnificence de sa grandeur, pendant un grand nombre de jours, pendant cent quatre-vingts jours.
5 And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;
Lorsque ces jours furent écoulés, le roi fit pour tout le peuple qui se trouvait à Suse, la capitale, depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit, un festin de sept jours, dans la cour du jardin de la maison royale.
6 [Where were] white, green, and blue, [hangings], fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds [were of] gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.
Des tentures blanches, vertes et bleues étaient attachées par des cordons de byssus et de pourpre à des anneaux d’argent et à des colonnes de marbre; des lits d’or et d’argent étaient posés sur un pavé de porphyre, de marbre blanc, de nacre et de marbre noir.
7 And they gave [them] drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another, ) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.
On servait à boire dans des vases d’or de différentes formes, et le vin royal était offert en abondance, grâce à la libéralité du roi.
8 And the drinking [was] according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.
Suivant le décret, chacun buvait sans que personne lui fît violence, car le roi avait ordonné à tous les officiers de sa maison de se conformer à la volonté de chacun des convives.
9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women [in] the royal house which [belonged] to king Ahasuerus.
La reine Vasthi fit aussi un festin pour les femmes, dans la maison royale du roi Assuérus.
10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
Le septième jour, comme le vin avait mis la joie au cœur du roi, il ordonna à Maüman, Bazatha, Harbona, Bagatha, Abgatha, Zéthar et Charchas, les sept eunuques qui servaient devant le roi Assuérus,
11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she [was] fair to look on.
d’amener en sa présence la reine Vasthi, couronnée du diadème royal, pour montrer sa beauté aux peuples et aux grands, car elle était belle de figure.
12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by [his] chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
Mais la reine Vasthi refusa de se rendre au commandement du roi, qu’elle avait reçu par l’intermédiaire des eunuques, et le roi fut très irrité et sa colère s’enflamma.
13 Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so [was] the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
Alors le roi s’adressa aux sages qui avaient la connaissance des temps: — car ainsi se traitaient les affaires du roi, devant tous ceux qui étaient experts dans la loi et le droit,
14 And the next unto him [was] Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, [and] Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king’s face, [and] which sat the first in the kingdom; )
et les plus près de lui étaient Charséna, Séthar, Admatha, Tharsis, Marès, Marsana et Mamuchan, les sept princes de Perse et de Médie, qui voyaient la face du roi et qui occupaient le premier rang dans le royaume. —
15 What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
« Quelle loi, dit-il, doit-on appliquer à la reine Vasthi, pour n’avoir pas exécuté l’ordre du roi Assuérus, qu’il lui a donné par l’intermédiaire des eunuques? »
16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that [are] in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
Mamuchan répondit devant le roi et les princes: « Ce n’est pas seulement à l’égard du roi que la reine Vasthi a mal agi, mais aussi envers tous les princes et tous les peuples qui sont dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus.
17 For [this] deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
Car l’action de la reine viendra à la connaissance de toutes les femmes et les portera à mépriser leurs maris; elles diront: Le roi Assuérus avait ordonné qu’on amenât en sa présence la reine Vasthi, et elle n’y est pas allée.
18 [Likewise] shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus [shall there arise] too much contempt and wrath.
Et dès aujourd’hui, les princesses de Perse et de Médie, qui auront appris l’action de la reine, la citeront à tous les princes du roi, et il en résultera beaucoup de mépris et de colère.
19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on publie de sa part et qu’on inscrive parmi les lois des Perses et des Mèdes, pour n’être pas enfreinte, une ordonnance royale portant que la reine Vasthi ne paraîtra plus devant le roi Assuérus, et que le roi donnera sa dignité de reine à une autre qui soit meilleure qu’elle.
20 And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great, ) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
Et quand l’édit du roi sera connu dans tout son royaume, qui est vaste, toutes les femmes rendront honneur à leurs maris, depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit. »
21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
Le conseil plut au roi et aux princes, et le roi agit selon le discours de Mamuchan.
22 For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that [it] should be published according to the language of every people.
Il envoya des lettres à toutes les provinces du royaume, à chaque province selon son écriture et à chaque peuple selon sa langue; elles portaient que tout mari devait être le maître dans sa maison et qu’il parlerait le langage de son peuple.
