Ecclesiastes 10
1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: [so doth] a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom [and] honour.
| همچنانکه مگسهای مرده می‌توانند یک شیشه عطر را متعفن کنند، همچنین یک حماقت کوچک می‌تواند حکمت و عزت شخص را بی‌ارزش نماید. |
2 A wise man’s heart [is] at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.
| دل شخص خردمند او را به انجام کارهای درست وا می‌دارد، اما دل شخص نادان او را به طرف بدی و گناه می‌کشاند. |
3 Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth [him], and he saith to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
| آدم نادان را می‌توان حتی از راه رفتنش شناخت. |
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
| وقتی رئیس تو از دست تو خشمگین می‌شود از کار خود دست نکش. اگر در مقابل خشم او آرام بمانی از بروز اشتباهات بیشتر جلوگیری خواهی کرد. |
5 There is an evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceedeth from the ruler:
| بدی دیگری نیز در زیر این آسمان دیده‌ام که در اثر اشتباهات برخی پادشاهان به وجود می‌آید: |
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
| به اشخاص نادان مقام و منصب‌های عالی داده می‌شود؛ برای ثروتمندان اهمیتی قائل نمی‌شوند؛ |
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
| غلامان سوار بر اسبند، ولی بزرگان مانند بردگان، پیاده راه می‌روند. |
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
| آن که چاه می‌کَنَد ممکن است در آن بیفتد؛ کسی که دیوار را سوراخ می‌کند ممکن است مار او را بگزد. |
9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; [and] he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
| آن که در معدن سنگ کار می‌کند ممکن است از سنگها صدمه ببیند؛ کسی که درخت می‌برد ممکن است از این کار آسیبی به او برسد. |
10 If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom [is] profitable to direct.
| تبر کُند، احتیاج به نیروی بیشتری دارد، پس کسی که تیغهٔ آن را از قبل تیز می‌کند، عاقل است. |
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
| پس از اینکه مار کسی را گزید، آوردن افسونگر بی‌فایده است. |
12 The words of a wise man’s mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
| سخنان شخص دانا دلنشین است، ولی حرفهای آدم نادان باعث تباهی خودش می‌گردد؛ |
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
| ابتدای حرفهای او حماقت است و انتهای آن دیوانگی محض؛ |
14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
| او زیاد حرف می‌زند. ولی کیست که از آینده خبر داشته باشد و بداند که چه پیش خواهد آمد؟ |
15 The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
| آدم نادان حتی از انجام دادن کوچکترین کار خسته می‌شود، زیرا شعور انجام دادن آن را ندارد. |
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
| وای بر سرزمینی که پادشاهش غلامی بیش نیست و رهبرانش صبحگاهان می‌خورند و مست می‌کنند! |
17 Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
| خوشا به حال مملکتی که پادشاه آن نجیب‌زاده است و رهبرانش به موقع و به اندازه می‌خورند و می‌نوشند و مست نمی‌کنند. |
18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
| در اثر تنبلی سقف خانه چکه می‌کند و فرو می‌ریزد. |
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].
| جشن، شادی می‌آورد و شراب باعث خوشی می‌گردد، اما بدون پول نمی‌شود اینها را فراهم کرد. |
20 Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
| حتی در فکر خود پادشاه را نفرین نکن و حتی در اتاق خوابت شخص ثروتمند را لعنت نکن، چون ممکن است پرنده‌ای حرفهایت را به گوش آنان برساند! |
