1 Samuel 11
1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.
Et Nahas, l'Ammonite, s'avança et vint camper devant Jabès en Galaad. Et tous les hommes de Jabès dirent à Nahas: Accorde-nous une capitulation, et nous nous soumettrons à toi.
2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this [condition] will I make [a covenant] with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it [for] a reproach upon all Israel.
Et Nahas, l'Ammonite, leur dit: Je capitulerai avec vous à cette condition que je vous crève à tous l'œil droit et qu'ainsi j'imprime un affront sur tout Israël.
3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if [there be] no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
Et les Anciens de Jabès lui dirent: Accorde-nous sept jours pour dépêcher des messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël, et s'il n'y a personne pour nous délivrer, nous nous rendrons à toi.
4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
Et les messagers arrivèrent à Gibea-Saül, et ils exposèrent l'affaire devant le peuple. Et tout le peuple éleva sa voix et pleura.
5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What [aileth] the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
Et voilà que Saül revenait des champs derrière ses bœufs. Et Saül dit: Qu'a le peuple pour pleurer? Et on lui rapporta le discours des hommes de Jabès.
6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.
Alors l'Esprit de Dieu s'empara de Saül à cette nouvelle, et sa colère s'alluma vivement.
7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent [them] throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
Et il prit un attelage de bœufs qu'il coupa en pièces, et il fit porter dans tout le territoire d'Israël par les messagers cet avis: Ainsi fera-t-on aux bœufs de quiconque ne marchera pas à la suite de Saül et de Samuel. Alors la terreur de l'Éternel envahit tout le peuple qui se leva comme un seul homme.
8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
Et il les fit passer à la revue à Bézek; et d'enfants d'Israël il y eut trois cent mille, et d'hommes de Juda trente mille.
9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by [that time] the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed [it] to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
Et ils dirent aux messagers arrivés: Parlez ainsi aux hommes de Jabès en Gaalad: Demain vous aurez du secours lorsque le soleil sera ardent. Et les messagers vinrent faire rapport aux hommes de Jabès qui furent réjouis.
10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
Alors les hommes de Jabès dirent [à Nahas]: Demain nous nous rendrons à vous, et vous nous traiterez à discrétion.
11 And it was [so] on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
Et le lendemain Saül rangea le peuple en trois corps; et ils envahirent le camp à la veille matinale, et ils battirent les Ammonites jusqu'à l'heure chaude du jour, et les réchappés furent dissipés, et il n'en resta pas deux ensemble.
12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who [is] he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
Ensuite le peuple dit à Samuel: Qui sont ceux qui ont dit: Saül régnerait-il sur nous? Livrez ces gens pour que nous les fassions mourir!
13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
Mais Saül dit: Personne ne sera mis à mort en ce jour, car aujourd'hui l'Éternel a opéré une délivrance en Israël.
14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.
Et Samuel dit au peuple: Venez et allons à Guilgal pour l'inauguration de la royauté.
15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
Alors tout le peuple se rendit à Guilgal et y déféra la royauté à Saül devant l'Éternel, à Guilgal, et y offrit des sacrifices pacifiques à l'Éternel. Et Saül et tous les hommes d'Israël y firent de grandes réjouissances.
