Acts 27
1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.
わたしたちがイタリアに向けて出航することが決まった時，人々は，パウロとほかの幾人かの囚人たちを，ユリウスという名の，アウグストゥスの部隊の百人隊長に引き渡した。
2 And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.
わたしたちは，アシア沿岸の各所に寄港することになっていたアドラミュティオンの船に乗り込んで，出航した。テサロニケのマケドニア人アリスタルコスも，わたしたちと共にいた。
3 And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously pleaded Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.
翌日，わたしたちはシドンに寄港した。ユリウスはパウロを親切に扱い，友人たちのところに行って休憩することを許可した。
4 And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
わたしたちはそこから出航したが，逆風だったので，キュプロスの島陰を航行した。
5 And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.
キリキアやパンフィリアの沖を航海して，リュキアの町ミュラに着いた。
6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.
ここで百人隊長は，イタリアに向けて航行しているアレクサンドリアの船を見つけて，わたしたちを乗り込ませた。
7 And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come opposite to Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, opposite to Salmone;
わたしたちは何日もの間のろのろと航海を続け，やっとのことでクニドスの沖まで来たが，風がわたしたちの進路を阻んだので，サルモネの沖を通ってクレタの島陰を航行した。
8 And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh unto which was the city of Lasea.
かろうじてその島に沿って航行し，ラセアの町に近い「美しい港」と呼ばれる所に着いた。
9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,
かなりの時が経過しており，すでに断食が過ぎていて航海がもはや危険であったので，パウロは人々に忠告して，
10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
彼らに言った，「皆さん，わたしの見るところでは，この航海は積み荷や船体ばかりでなく，わたしたちの命にまで損傷や多大な損失をもたらすことになるでしょう」。
11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.
ところが百人隊長は，パウロの語ったことよりも，船長や船主のほうに信頼を置いた。
12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lies toward the south west and north west.
この港は冬を越すのに適していなかったので，大多数の者は，そこから海に出て，できれば何とかしてフェニクスまで行き，そこで冬を越すようにと勧めた。そこはクレタの港町で，北東と南東に面している。
13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.
穏やかな南風が吹いてきたので，人々は自分たちの目的が達成できるものと思い，錨を上げ，クレタの海岸に沿って航行した。
14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.
しかし間もなく，ユーラキュロンと呼ばれる大暴風が陸のほうから吹き下ろしてきた。
15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.
船が巻き込まれ，風に向かって進むことができなくなったので，わたしたちは流されるに任せた。
16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:
クラウダと呼ばれる小島の陰を通ったので，わたしたちはやっとのことで小舟をつなぎ留めることができた。
17 Which when they had taken up, they used support cables, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksand, strake sail, and so were driven.
人々はそれを引き上げてから，太綱を用いて船体を補強した。シュルティスの砂州に乗り上げるのを恐れて，海錨を降ろし，こうして流されるままとなった。
18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;
わたしたちはあらしに激しく揺られたので，翌日，人々は荷物を海に投げ込み始めた。
19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the cordage of the ship.
三日目には船具を自分たちの手で投げ捨てた。
20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.
何日もの間，太陽も星もわたしたちの上に輝かず，激しい大あらしがわたしたちの上に荒れ狂い，わたしたちが助かる望みはついに消え失せた。
21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, all of you should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.
人々は長いこと食事を取っていなかった。その時，パウロは彼らの真ん中に立ち，こう言った。「皆さん，あなた方はわたしの言葉を聞き入れて，クレタから出航せず，このような損傷や損失を被らないようにするべきでした。
22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.
しかし今，わたしはあなた方に元気を出すよう勧めます。船は失いますが，あなた方のうちで命を失う者はいないからです。
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
というのは，わたしが身をささげて仕えている神からのみ使いが，昨夜わたしのそばに立って，
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God has given you all them that sail with you.
こう言ったからです。『パウロよ，恐れてはいけない。あなたはカエサルの前に立たなければならない。見よ，神は，あなたと共に航海しているすべての者を，あなたに授けられたのだ』。
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.
ですから，皆さん，元気を出しなさい！ わたしは神を信じているからです。わたしに語られたことはその通りになる，と。
26 Nevertheless we must be cast upon a certain island.
それで，わたしたちは必ずどこかの島に打ち上げられることになるでしょう」。
27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the sailors deemed that they drew near to some country;
さて，十四日目の夜になって，わたしたちがアドリア海を漂流していると，真夜中ごろ，船員たちは，自分たちがどこかの島に近づいていると感づいた。
28 And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.
水深を測ってみると，二十ひろであった。少し進んだ後，もう一度測ってみると，十五ひろであった。
29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
岩場にわたしたちが乗り上げることを恐れて，人々は船尾から四つの錨を降ろし，夜明けを待ち望んだ。
30 And as the sailors were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the bow,
船員たちは船から逃げ出そうとし，船首から錨を降ろすふりをして，小舟を海に降ろしていた。
31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, all of you cannot be saved.
パウロは百人隊長や兵士たちに言った，「あの人たちが船にとどまっていなければ，あなた方は助かりません」。
32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
そこで兵士たちは綱を断ち切って，小舟を下に落とした。
33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that all of you have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.
夜が明けるころ，パウロはみんなに食事を取るよう懇願して，こう言った。「あなた方はずっと待っていて，食事もせず，何も取らずに，今日で十四日目になります。
34 Wherefore I pray you to take some food: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
ですから，わたしはあなた方に食事を取るよう懇願します。あなた方の安全のためです。あなた方のうちのどの頭からも，髪の毛一本さえ滅びることはないからです」。
35 And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.
こう言ってから，パンを取り，みんなの前で神に感謝をささげてから，それを裂き，食べ始めた。
36 Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some food.
そこで，みんなは元気づき，彼らも食事を取った。
37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.
わたしたち船にいた魂は，合計二百七十六人であった。
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.
人々は十分に食べてから，小麦を海に投げ込んで，船を軽くした。
39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.
朝になると，陸地は分からなかったが，浜辺のある入り江に気づき，そこに船を乗り入れることにした。
40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoisted up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.
錨を捨てて海に沈め，同時にかじの綱をほどいた。風に船首の帆をあげて，浜辺に向かって進んだ。
41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the front part stuck fast, and remained immoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.
ところが，二つの海に挟まれた所に来ると，人々は船をそこに乗り上げてしまった。船首はめり込んで動かなくなり，船尾は激しい波で壊れ始めた。
42 And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.
兵士たちは，囚人たちを殺して，だれも泳いで逃げることのないようにしようと相談した。
43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
しかし，百人隊長はパウロを助けたいと思い，その計画を妨げた。そして，泳げる者たちがまず船から飛び込んで陸に向かうようにと命じ，
44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.
残りの者には，厚板や，そのほかの船からのものにつかまって来るようにと命じた。こうして，みんなが無事に陸に逃れたのである。
