Acts 27
1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.
Lorsqu'il fut décidé que nous partirions pour l'Italie, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers à un centurion de la cohorte Augusta, nommé Julius.
2 And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.
Montés à bord d'un navire d'Adramyttium qui devait faire escale dans les ports de la province d'Asie, nous prîmes la mer; un Macédonien de Thessalonique, Aristarque, était avec nous.
3 And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously pleaded Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.
Le second jour nous arrivions à Sidon, et Julius, qui traitait Paul avec beaucoup de douceur, lui permit d'aller visiter ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins.
4 And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
Partis de là, nous suivîmes les côtes de l'île de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires,
5 And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.
et, après avoir traversé la mer qui baigne la Cilicie et la Pamphylie, nous abordâmes à Myrra en Lycie.
6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.
Là le centurion, ayant trouvé un navire alexandrin qui faisait voile pour l'Italie, nous fit monter à son bord.
7 And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come opposite to Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, opposite to Salmone;
Après plusieurs jours d'une navigation très lente, nous arrivions à grand'peine à la hauteur de Cnide. Le vent ne nous permettant pas d'aborder, nous suivîmes les côtes de l'île de Crète dans la direction du cap Salmoné.
8 And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh unto which was the city of Lasea.
Après l'avoir doublé, non sans difficulté, nous arrivâmes à un endroit appelé Les Bons-Ports, près de la ville de Lasa.
9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,
Il s'était écoulé un temps considérable, et la navigation devenait dangereuse, l'époque du Grand Jeûne étant déjà passée.
10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
Paul alors donna son avis. «Je prévois, dit-il, de sérieuses avaries et de grands dangers, non seulement pour la cargaison et pour le bateau, mais pour nos personnes mêmes, si nous continuons notre voyage.»
11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.
Mais le centurion avait plus de confiance en ce que disaient le capitaine et le pilote qu'en ce que disait Paul.
12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lies toward the south west and north west.
D'ailleurs le port n'était pas bon pour hiverner, et l'avis général fut d'en repartir et de tâcher de gagner, pour y passer l'hiver, Phénix, port de Crète, exposé au sud-ouest et au nord-ouest.
13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.
Comme il soufflait une brise du sud, on crut le moment favorable, on leva l'ancre et on se mit à longer de près les côtes de Crète.
14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.
Mais, tout à coup, un des ouragans, appelés Euraquilon, vint s'abattre sur l'île.
15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.
Le navire entraîné fut hors d'état de tenir tête au vent; on céda; on fut emporté.
16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:
Comme nous passions sous une petite île appelée Clandé, nous parvînmes, mais non sans peine, à manoeuvrer la chaloupe.
17 Which when they had taken up, they used support cables, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksand, strake sail, and so were driven.
On s'en servit pour prendre quelques précautions et entourer le navire de câbles. Puis, comme on craignait d'être jeté sur les Syrtes, on plia les vergues et on s'abandonna au vent.
18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;
Le second jour, la tempête était toujours aussi forte, et on, jeta à la mer tout le chargement;
19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the cordage of the ship.
le troisième, nous nous débarrassions nous-mêmes du mobilier du navire.
20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.
On ne vit pas le soleil, on n'aperçut pas une seule étoile pendant plusieurs jours, et la tempête restant toujours aussi affreuse, tout espoir de salut nous fut dès lors interdit.
21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, all of you should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.
Comme depuis longtemps personne n'avait pris de nourriture, Paul parut au milieu de tous et dit: «Il aurait fallu écouter mon conseil et ne pas partir de l'île de Crète; vous auriez évité ce désastre et cette perte.
22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.
Mais maintenant je vous invite à prendre courage; aucun de vous ne périra; le navire seul sera perdu.
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
Car cette nuit m'est apparu un ange du Dieu auquel j'appartiens et que j'adore,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God has given you all them that sail with you.
et il m'a dit: «Ne crains rien, Paul! tu dois comparaître devant l'Empereur, et Dieu t'accorde la vie de tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.»
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.
Ayez donc bon courage; car j'ai cette foi en Dieu, qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit.
26 Nevertheless we must be cast upon a certain island.
Il faut que nous soyons jetés sur une île.»
27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the sailors deemed that they drew near to some country;
La quatorzième nuit que nous étions ainsi ballottés sur l'Adriatique, vers le milieu de cette nuit, les matelots crurent au voisinage de la terre.
28 And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.
Ils jetèrent la sonde, et trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu après ils la jetèrent encore, et trouvèrent quinze brasses:
29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
ils craignirent d'aller donner sur des récifs; quatre ancres furent alors jetées de la poupe et chacun attendit le jour avec anxiété.
30 And as the sailors were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the bow,
Comme les matelots cherchaient à s'échapper du navire et mettaient la chaloupe à la mer sous prétexte de jeter les ancres de l'avant,
31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, all of you cannot be saved.
Paul dit au centurion et aux soldats: Si ces hommes ne restent pas à bord vous ne pouvez être sauvés.»
32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
Les soldats coupèrent alors les cordes de la chaloupe et la laissèrent tomber.
33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that all of you have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.
Paul, en attendant le jour, conseilla à tous de prendre de la nourriture. «C'est aujourd'hui le quatorzième jour, dit-il, que vous passez dans l'attente, à jeun, sans rien prendre.
34 Wherefore I pray you to take some food: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
Je vous conseille donc de manger; cela est nécessaire à votre salut; aucun de vous ne perdra un cheveu de sa tête.»
35 And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.
En disant cela, il prit du pain, le rompit, en rendant grâces à Dieu devant tous, et se mit à manger.
36 Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some food.
Tous reprirent alors courage et mangèrent aussi.
37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.
Nous étions en tout deux cent soixante-seize à bord
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.
Quand on eut fini, on allégea encore le navire en jetant tout le blé à la mer.
39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.
Lorsque le jour parut, personne ne reconnut la terre, mais on entrevoyait une baie avec une plage et on résolut d'essayer d'y mettre le navire à l'abri.
40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoisted up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.
On coupa donc les câbles des ancres qu'on laissa se perdre dans la mer, on lâcha les amarres des gouvernails, on hissa la voile d'artimon qu'on offrit au vent et on gouverna vers la plage.
41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the front part stuck fast, and remained immoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.
On tomba sur une langue de terre battue des deux côtés par la mer; là, le navire échoua. La proue, qui s'était enfoncée dans le sable, resta immobile; la poupe, au contraire, se disloquait à chaque coup de mer.
42 And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.
Les soldats proposèrent alors de tuer les prisonniers de peur qu'ils ne s'échappassent à la nage.
43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
Mais le centurion, qui voulait sauver Paul, les empêcha de le faire; il ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager de se jeter les premiers à l'eau et de gagner la terre;
44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.
aux autres de se mettre sur des planches, sur des épaves de toutes sortes; et c'est ainsi que tous réussirent à se sauver à terre.
