Deuteronomy 20

1 WHEN thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Wenn du zum Streite ausgehst wider deinen Feind und siehst Roß und Wagen und mehr Volk als du, so fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen, denn Jehovah, dein Gott, Der dich aus Ägyptenland heraufgeführt, ist mit dir.

2 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

Und es geschehe, wenn ihr nahet zum Streit, da trete der Priester herzu und rede zu dem Volk,

3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;

Und spreche zu ihnen: Höre, Israel, ihr nahet heute zum Streite wider eure Feinde. Euer Herz werde nicht weich, fürchtet nicht, seid nicht bange und es graue dir nicht vor ihnen!

4 For the Lord your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Denn Jehovah, euer Gott, zieht mit euch, daß Er für euch streite wider eure Feinde, euch zu retten.

5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

Und die Vorsteher sollen zum Volk reden und sprechen: Wer ist der Mann, der ein neues Haus gebaut und noch nicht eingeweiht hat? Der gehe und kehre zu seinem Haus zurück, auf daß er nicht sterbe im Streite und ein anderer Mann weihe es ein.

6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.

Und wer ist der Mann, der einen Weinberg gepflanzt und noch nicht von ihm genossen hat? Der gehe und kehre zurück zu seinem Haus, auf daß er nicht sterbe im Streite und ein anderer ihn genieße.

7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

Und wer ist der Mann, der sich einem Weibe verlobt und sie noch nicht zu sich genommen hat? Der gehe und kehre zurück zu seinem Haus, auf daß er nicht sterbe im Streite und ein anderer Mann sie nehme.

8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.

Und die Vorsteher sollen weiter zum Volke reden und sprechen: Wer ist der Mann, der da Furcht hat und weichen Herzens ist? Der gehe und kehre zurück zu seinem Haus, auf daß nicht auch seiner Brüder Herz zerschmelze, wie sein Herz.

9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

Und es geschehe, wenn die Vorsteher zu Ende sind mit dem Reden zum Volke, dann sollen sie die Obersten der Heerscharen an die Spitze des Volkes stellen.

10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

Wenn einer Stadt du nahest, um wider sie zu streiten, so rufe sie zum Frieden auf.

11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

Und es geschehe, so sie friedlich ant- wortet und öffnet dir, so soll alles Volk, das sich in ihr findet, dir zinsbar sein und dir dienen.

12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

Will sie aber nicht friedlich mit dir handeln und führt Streit wider dich und du belagerst sie,

13 And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

Und Jehovah, dein Gott, gibt sie in deine Hand, so sollst du alles, was männlich ist darinnen, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes schlagen.

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.

Nur die Weiber und die Kindlein und das Vieh, und alles, was in der Stadt ist, alle ihre Beute magst du dir rauben und verzehren die Beute deiner Feinde, die Jehovah, dein Gott, dir gegeben hat.

15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

So sollst du allen Städten tun, die sehr fern von dir und die nicht unter den Städten dieser Völkerschaften hier sind.

16 But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

Hingegen in den Städten dieser Völker, die Jehovah, dein Gott, dir zum Erbe gibt, sollst du keines von allem, das Odem hat, leben lassen,

17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:

Sondern sie sollst du ganz und gar verbannen, den Chethiter und den Amoriter, den Kanaaniter und den Pherisiter, den Chiviter und den Jebusiter, wie Jehovah, dein Gott, geboten hat.

18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the Lord your God.

Daß sie euch nicht lehren zu tun nach all ihren Greueln, den sie ihren Göttern tun, und ihr an Jehovah, eurem Gott, sündigt.

19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:

Wenn du eine Stadt viele Tage belagerst, so daß du wider sie streitest, um sie zu gewinnen, so sollst du ihre Bäume nicht verderben, daß du mit der Axt dagegen ausholst; denn du kannst davon essen, und darum sollst du sie nicht ausrotten; ist denn der Baum des Feldes ein Mensch, daß er vor dir in Belagerung komme?

20 Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.

Nur einen Baum, von dem du weißt, daß er kein Baum ist, von dem man ißt, ihn magst du verderben und ausrotten, und daraus bauen ein Bollwerk wider die Stadt, die mit dir Streit führt, bis du sie unterwirfst.
