Acts 22
1 Men, brothers, and fathers, hear you my defense which I make now to you.
« Frères et pères, écoutez la justification que je viens vous présenter. »
2 (And when they heard that he spoke in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he says, )
Quand ils entendirent qu'il les haranguait en hébreu, ils redoublèrent de tranquillité, et il dit:
3 I am truly a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as you all are this day.
« Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie, mais élevé dans cette ville-ci, où j'ai été exactement instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la loi de nos pères, et où je me suis montré zélateur de Dieu comme tous vous l'êtes aujourd'hui;
4 And I persecuted this way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
aussi ai-je persécuté cette doctrine à mort, enchaînant et jetant en prison hommes et femmes,
5 As also the high priest does bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound to Jerusalem, for to be punished.
comme le grand prêtre et tout le corps des anciens m'en rendaient aussi le témoignage. En outre, ayant reçu d'eux des lettres pour les frères, je m'en allais à Damas, afin de ramener aussi à Jérusalem, chargés de chaînes, ceux qui se trouvaient là, pour qu'ils fussent punis;
6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come near to Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
mais, pendant que j'étais en route, et comme j'approchais de Damas, tout à coup, vers midi, une grande lumière rayonna du ciel tout autour de moi,
7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecute you me?
et je tombai sur le sol, et j'entendis une voix qui me disait: « Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? »
8 And I answered, Who are you, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.
Et je répliquai: « Qui es-tu, Seigneur? » Et il me dit: « Je suis Jésus le Nazoréen que tu persécutes. »
9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spoke to me.
Or ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
10 And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the Lord said to me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told you of all things which are appointed for you to do.
Et je dis: « Que dois-je faire, Seigneur? » Et le Seigneur me dit: « Lève-toi, et rends-toi à Damas, et là on te parlera de tout ce qu'il t'est ordonné de faire. »
11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
Or, comme je ne voyais rien à cause de l'éclat de cette lumière, ce fut en me conduisant par la main que mes compagnons me firent entrer à Damas.
12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelled there,
Cependant un certain Ananias, homme pieux selon la loi et auquel tous les Juifs de l'endroit rendaient un bon témoignage,
13 Came to me, and stood, and said to me, Brother Saul, receive your sight. And the same hour I looked up on him.
vint auprès de moi, et, s'étant approché, il me dit: « Saul, mon frère, regarde. » Et à ce moment même je le regardai.
14 And he said, The God of our fathers has chosen you, that you should know his will, and see that Just One, and should hear the voice of his mouth.
Puis il me dit: « Le Dieu de nos pères t'a élu d'avance pour que tu connusses Sa volonté, que tu visses le juste, et que tu entendisses les paroles de sa bouche,
15 For you shall be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.
parce que tu lui serviras de témoin auprès de tous les hommes pour ce que tu as vu et entendu.
16 And now why tarry you? arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Et maintenant pourquoi tardes-tu? Lève-toi pour recevoir dans le baptême l'ablution de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom. »
17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
Or, lorsque je fus retourné à Jérusalem, il m'advint, comme je priais dans le temple, de me trouver en extase,
18 And saw him saying to me, Make haste, and get you quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.
et de le voir qui me disait: « Hâte-toi, et sors promptement de Jérusalem, parce qu'ils ne recevront pas ton témoignage sur moi. »
19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on you:
Et je dis: « Seigneur, ils savent que je faisais emprisonner et battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croient en toi,
20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting to his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
et, lorsque fut versé le sang d'Etienne ton témoin, moi-même j'étais aussi présent, applaudissant avec les autres et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le faisaient mourir. »
21 And he said to me, Depart: for I will send you far hence to the Gentiles.
Et il me dit: « Va, car je t'enverrai au loin vers les Gentils… »
22 And they gave him audience to this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
Mais, après l'avoir écouté jusques à cette parole, ils élevèrent la voix en disant: « Ôte cet individu de dessus la terre, car il ne devrait pas vivre. »
23 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
Et comme ils poussaient des cris, et se débarrassaient de leurs vêtements, et lançaient de la poussière en l'air,
24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know why they cried so against him.
le commandant ordonna qu'on le fît entrer au quartier, après avoir enjoint qu'on lui donnât la question à coups de fouet, afin d'apprendre pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to whip a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
Mais, lorsqu'on l'eut exposé aux lanières, Paul dit au centurion qui se trouvait présent: « Est-ce qu'il vous est permis de flageller un citoyen romain, et encore sans jugement? »
26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what you do: for this man is a Roman.
Ce que le centurion ayant ouï, il vint au commandant lui en faire rapport en disant: « Que vas-tu faire? Car cet homme est Romain. »
27 Then the chief captain came, and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? He said, Yes.
Et le commandant étant venu lui dit: « Dis-moi, es-tu Romain? » Et il dit: « Oui. »
28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
Sur quoi le commandant reprit: « Pour moi, c'est au prix d'une grosse somme que j'ai acquis ce titre de citoyen. » Et Paul dit: « Quant à moi, je le possède par ma naissance. »
29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
En conséquence ceux qui devaient lui donner la question s'éloignèrent immédiatement de lui, et le commandant fut effrayé en réfléchissant qu'il était Romain, et qu'il l'avait fait charger de chaînes.
30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty why he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
Mais le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement à quoi s'en tenir sur ce dont il était accusé par les Juifs, il lui fit ôter ses chaînes, et ordonna que les grands prêtres et tout le sanhédrin se rassemblassent, et, ayant fait descendre Paul avec lui, il le plaça au milieu d'eux.
