Ruth 3

1 And Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her: 'My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

Et Noomi, sa belle-mère, lui dit: Ma fille, ne dois-je pas chercher pour toi un établissement qui te rende heureuse?

2 And now is there not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.

Eh bien! Boaz dont tu as accompagné les filles, n'est-il pas notre parent?

3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshing-floor; but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

Voici, il vanne cette nuit l'orge sur l'aire; baigne-toi donc, oins-toi, et te couvre de ta mante, et descends à l'aire. Reste ignorée de lui jusqu'à ce qu'il ait fini de manger et de boire.

4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.'

Et lorsqu'il se couchera, remarque le lieu où il se couche; puis va, relève la couverture de ses pieds, et couche-toi: or lui-même il t'indiquera ce que tu as à faire.

5 And she said unto her: 'All that thou sayest unto me I will do.'

Et elle lui répondit: Tout ce que tu m'as dit, je le ferai.

6 And she went down unto the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.

Elle descendit donc à l'aire et s'y prit en tous points comme sa belle-mère l'avait prescrit.

7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn; and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

Et lorsque Boaz eut mangé et bu et qu'il eut le cœur gai, il vint se coucher au bout du monceau des gerbes. Alors elle arriva doucement, et elle releva la couverture de ses pieds, puis elle se coucha.

8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was startled, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.

Et à minuit il eut une frayeur, et il se pencha en avant, et voilà qu'une femme était couchée à ses pieds.

9 And he said: 'Who art thou?' And she answered: 'I am Ruth thine handmaid; spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.'

Et il dit: Qui es-tu? Et elle dit: Je suis Ruth, ta servante; et étends ton aile sur ta servante, car tu as le droit et le devoir lignager.

10 And he said: 'Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter; thou hast shown more kindness in the end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou didst not follow the young men, whether poor or rich.

Et il dit: Sois bénie par l'Éternel, ma fille! car tu montres mieux ton amour en dernier lieu que tu ne l'as déjà fait en premier lieu, car tu ne vises pas aux jeunes hommes, soit pauvres, soit riches.

11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the men in the gate of my people do know that thou art a virtuous woman.

Dès lors, ma fille, sois sans crainte! tout ce que tu as dit, je le ferai pour toi, car toute la Porte de mon peuple sait que tu es une femme de bien.

12 And now it is true that I am a near kinsman; howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

Et maintenant, quoiqu'il soit vrai que je suis lié par le devoir lignager, tu as cependant un parent lignager plus proche que moi.

13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part; but if he be not willing to do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth; lie down until the morning.'

Laisse passer la nuit; et dès le matin, s'il veut user de son droit, bien, qu'il en use; mais s'il ne se soucie pas de te réclamer, je te réclamerai, moi, Vive l'Éternel! Reste couchée jusqu'au matin.

14 And she lay at his feet until the morning; and she rose up before one could discern another. For he said: 'Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.'

Elle demeura donc couchée à ses pieds jusqu'au matin. Puis elle se leva avant que deux personnes pussent se reconnaître l'une l'autre.

15 And he said: 'Bring the mantle that is upon thee, and hold it'; and she held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; and he went into the city.

Et il dit: Il ne faut pas qu'on sache que la femme est venue sur l'aire. Et il dit: Donne le manteau que tu as sur toi et tiens-le. Et elle le tint et il mesura six boisseaux d'orge, et il l'en chargea puis il revint à la ville.

16 And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said: 'Who art thou, my daughter?' And she told her all that the man had done to her.

Et lorsqu'elle arriva chez sa belle-mère, celle-ci dit: Qui es-tu, ma fille? Et Ruth lui raconta tout ce que l'homme avait fait pour elle.

17 And she said: 'These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me: Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law.'

Et elle dit: Il m'a donné ces six boisseaux d'orge; car il disait: Tu ne dois pas te présenter sans rien chez ta belle-mère.

18 Then said she: 'Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he have finished the thing this day.'

Et celle-ci dit: Attends, ma fille, de voir l'issue qu'aura la chose. Car cet homme n'aura pas de repos qu'il n'ait terminé l'affaire aujourd'hui.
