Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well him that is before thee;
Si tu t'assieds à table avec un prince, considère bien qui tu as devant toi,
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
et mets un couteau à ton gosier, si tu as un appétit trop grand!
3 Be not desirous of his dainties; seeing they are deceitful food.
Ne convoite point ses friandises, car c'est un mets trompeur.
4 Weary not thyself to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.
Ne t'efforce pas de l'enrichir, renonce à être si prudent!
5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon it? it is gone; for riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.
Tes regards voltigeront-ils vers ce qui va n'être plus? car il prendra des ailes, comme l'aigle et les oiseaux du ciel.
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties;
Ne mange pas le pain de l'avare, et ne convoite pas ses friandises!
7 For as one that hath reckoned within himself, so is he: 'Eat and drink', saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Car il est ce qu'il est en son cœur, calculateur. Mange et bois! te dira-t-il; mais son cœur n'est pas avec toi;
8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
tu rejetteras le morceau que tu auras mangé, et tu auras tenu en pure perte d'agréables propos.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool; for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Aux oreilles de l'insensé ne parle pas, car il méprise la sagesse de tes discours.
10 Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless;
Ne déplace point la borne antique, et n'envahis point le champ de l'orphelin!
11 For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause with thee.
Car son vengeur est puissant, et Il prendra son parti contre toi.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Présente ton cœur à la correction, et tes oreilles aux discours de la sagesse.
13 Withhold not correction from the child; for though thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
N'épargne pas la correction au jeune enfant! Si tu le frappes de la verge, il ne mourra point.
En le frappant de la verge tu sauves son âme des Enfers. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart will be glad, even mine;
Mon fils, si ton cœur est sage, mon cœur, oui, mon cœur sera dans la joie;
16 Yea, my reins will rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
l'allégresse pénétrera mes entrailles, si tes lèvres parlent avec rectitude.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners, but be in the fear of the LORD all the day;
Que ton cœur n'envie pas les pécheurs, mais qu'il garde toujours la crainte de l'Éternel.
18 For surely there is a future; and thy hope shall not be cut off.
Non! car il est un avenir, et ton espoir ne sera pas mis à néant.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
Ecoute, mon fils, et sois sage, et dirige ton cœur dans le droit chemin.
20 Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh;
Ne sois point parmi les buveurs de vin, et ceux qui sont prodigues de leur corps;
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
car le buveur et le prodigue s'appauvrissent, et l'assoupissement revêt de haillons.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begot thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Obéis à ton père, il t'a engendré, et ne méprise point ta mère devenue vieille.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Achète la vérité, et ne la vends pas, la sagesse, la discipline et le sens.
24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.
Le père du juste est dans l'allégresse, et celui qui a engendré un sage, en recueille de la joie.
25 Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her that bore thee rejoice.
Puisses-tu réjouir ton père et ta mère, et être l'allégresse de celle qui te donna naissance!
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Donne-moi ton cœur, mon fils, et que mes voies plaisent à tes yeux!
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch; and an alien woman is a narrow pit.
Car la courtisane est une fosse profonde, et l'étrangère, un puits étroit;
28 She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the faithless among men.
elle épie, comme un ravisseur, et augmente parmi les hommes le nombre des infidèles.
29 Who crieth: 'Woe'? who: 'Alas'? who hath contentions? who hath raving? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
Pour qui sont les ah? pour qui les hélas? pour qui les rixes? pour qui le chagrin? pour qui les coups non provoqués? pour qui les yeux troubles.
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.
Pour ceux qui boivent longuement, qui viennent déguster le vin parfumé.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it glideth down smoothly;
Ne regarde pas le vin, quand il est vermeil, quand dans la coupe il élève ses bulles, et que sa liqueur est flatteuse!
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like a basilisk.
Il finit par blesser comme le serpent, et par piquer, comme la vipère.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter confused things.
Tes yeux alors se porteront sur les étrangères, et ton cœur tiendra un langage pervers;
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
et tu seras comme celui qui dort en pleine mer, comme celui qui dort à la cime du mât.
35 'They have struck me, and I felt it not, they have beaten me, and I knew it not; when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.'
« Ils me battent; cela ne fait pas mal: ils me frappent; je ne sens rien. Quand me réveillerai-je? J'y veux retourner. »
