Nehemiah 5
1 Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.
I podniósł się wielki krzyk ludu i ich żon przeciwko swym braciom Żydom.
2 For there were that said: 'We, our sons and our daughters, are many; let us get for them corn, that we may eat and live.'
Niektórzy bowiem mówili: Jest nas wielu wraz z synami i córkami i musimy nabyć zboża, abyśmy mogli jeść i żyć.
3 Some also there were that said: 'We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses; let us get corn, because of the dearth.'
Inni zaś mówili: Nasze pola, winnice i domy musimy dać pod zastaw, aby nabyć zboża na czas głodu.
4 There were also that said: 'We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards.
Jeszcze inni mówili: Pożyczyliśmy pieniądze, aby dać podatek królowi, [zastawiając] nasze pola i nasze winnice.
5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.'
A przecież nasze ciało jest jak ciało naszych braci, [a] nasi synowie są jak ich synowie. A jednak to my musimy oddać naszych synów i nasze córki w niewolę i [niektóre] z naszych córek są już zaprzedane w niewolę, a my nie mamy siły w naszych rękach, aby [je odkupić], gdyż nasze pola i winnice [należą] do innych.
6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
I rozgniewałem się bardzo, gdy usłyszałem ich wołanie i te słowa.
7 Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them: 'Ye lend upon pledge, every one to his brother.' And I held a great assembly against them.
Rozważyłem to w swoim sercu, po czym skarciłem dostojników i przełożonych, mówiąc do nich: Każdy z was uprawia lichwę wobec swoich braci. Zebrałem więc wielkie zgromadzenie przeciwko nim;
8 And I said unto them: 'We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that sold themselves unto the heathen; and would ye nevertheless sell your brethren, and should they sell themselves unto us?' Then held they their peace, and found never a word.
I powiedziałem do nich: My według naszych możliwości odkupiliśmy swoich braci Żydów, którzy zostali zaprzedani poganom, a wy chcecie sprzedać swoich braci? Chcielibyście ich nam sprzedać? Oni zamilkli, nie znajdując odpowiedzi.
9 Also I said: 'The thing that ye do is not good; ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?
Ponadto powiedziałem: Nie jest dobre to, co czynicie. Czy nie powinniście kroczyć w bojaźni naszego Boga, by uniknąć zhańbienia od pogan, naszych wrogów?
10 And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, have lent them money and corn. I pray you, let us leave off this exaction.
Także ja i moi bracia oraz moi słudzy pożyczyliśmy im pieniądze i zboże. Porzućmy, proszę, tę lichwę.
11 Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundred pieces of silver, and the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.'
Zwróćcie im, proszę, ich pole, winnice, oliwniki i domy oraz setną część pieniędzy, zboża, wina i oliwy, którą od nich pobieracie.
12 Then said they: 'We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest.' Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
Wtedy odpowiedzieli: Zwrócimy i nie będziemy domagać się [niczego] od nich. Uczynimy tak, jak ty powiedziałeś. Wezwałem więc kapłanów i kazałem przysiąc [wierzycielom], że postąpią według tej obietnicy.
13 Also I shook out my lap, and said: 'So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.' And all the congregation said: 'Amen', and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.
Potem wytrząsnąłem swoje zanadrze i powiedziałem: Tak niech Bóg wytrząśnie każdego z jego domu i z [owocu] jego pracy, kto nie dotrzyma tej obietnicy. Niech tak będzie wytrząśnięty i ogołocony. I całe zgromadzenie powiedziało: Amen. I chwalili PANA. I lud postąpił według tej obietnicy.
14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.
Również od dnia, w którym ustanowiono mnie ich namiestnikiem w ziemi Judy, od dwudziestego aż do trzydziestego drugiego roku króla Artakserksesa, przez dwanaście lat, ja i moi bracia nie jedliśmy chleba przysługującego namiestnikowi.
15 But the former governors that were before me laid burdens upon the people, and took of them for bread and wine above forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants lorded over the people; but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
Dawni namiestnicy, którzy byli przede mną, obciążali lud, pobierając od niego chleb i wino, a ponadto czterdzieści syklów srebra. Ich słudzy również wykorzystywali lud. Lecz ja tak nie postępowałem z bojaźni Bożej.
16 Yea, also I set hand to the work of this wall, neither bought we any land; and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.
Także pracowałem przy naprawie tego muru, a pola nie kupiłem. Wszyscy też moi słudzy zgromadzili się tam do pracy.
17 Moreover there were at my table of the Jews and the rulers a hundred and fifty men, beside those that came unto us from among the nations that were round about us.
Ponadto przy moim stole [byli] Żydzi i przełożeni w liczbie stu pięćdziesięciu oraz ci, którzy przychodzili do nas spośród okolicznych pogan.
18 Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep, also fowls were prepared for me; and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine; yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the service was heavy upon this people.
Przygotowywano więc dla mnie każdego dnia jednego wołu, sześć wybornych owiec oraz drób, a co dziesięć dni rozmaite wino. Mimo to nie domagałem się chleba przysługującego namiestnikowi, gdyż niewola ciążyła nad tym ludem.
19 Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.
Wspomnij na mnie, mój Boże, ku [memu] dobru, ze względu na wszystko, co czyniłem dla tego ludu.
