Nehemiah 5

1 Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

Et il y eut grande réclamation du peuple et des femmes auprès de leurs frères les Juifs.

2 For there were that said: 'We, our sons and our daughters, are many; let us get for them corn, that we may eat and live.'

Et il y en avait qui disaient: De nos fils et de nos filles nous avons un grand nombre: fournissez-nous donc de blé afin que nous ayons de quoi manger pour vivre.

3 Some also there were that said: 'We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses; let us get corn, because of the dearth.'

Et il y en avait qui disaient: Nous allons engager nos champs et nos vignes et nos maisons pour nous procurer du blé dans la disette.

4 There were also that said: 'We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards.

Puis il y en avait qui disaient: Nous avons emprunté de l'argent, pour les impôts à payer au roi, sur nos champs et nos vignes.

5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.'

Et pourtant notre corps est comme le corps de nos frères, et nos enfants comme leurs enfants. Et voilà que nous devons soumettre à l'esclavage nos fils et nos filles; et il y a déjà de nos filles qui le subissent, et nous ne possédons absolument rien, et nos champs et nos vignes sont à d'autres.

6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

Alors j'eus une colère extrême, lorsque j'entendis leur clameur et ces discours.

7 Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them: 'Ye lend upon pledge, every one to his brother.' And I held a great assembly against them.

Et mon cœur me fit prendre la résolution de réprimander les nobles et les chefs, et je leur dis: Vous pratiquez l'usure l'un envers l'autre. Et je provoquai contre eux une grande assemblée

8 And I said unto them: 'We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that sold themselves unto the heathen; and would ye nevertheless sell your brethren, and should they sell themselves unto us?' Then held they their peace, and found never a word.

et je leur dis: Nous avons racheté nos frères, les Juifs, qui avaient été vendus aux nations, selon nos moyens; et vous aussi vous voulez vendre nos frères! et ils devront se vendre à nous!

9 Also I said: 'The thing that ye do is not good; ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

Alors ils se turent, et ils ne trouvèrent mot à dire. Et je dis: Il n'est pas bien à vous d'en agir de la sorte! Ne devriez-vous pas marcher dans la crainte de notre Dieu, pour n'être pas honnis par les peuples, nos ennemis?

10 And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, have lent them money and corn. I pray you, let us leave off this exaction.

Moi aussi, mes frères et mes écuyers nous leur avons prêté de l'argent et du blé. Faisons donc abandon de ce dû!

11 Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundred pieces of silver, and the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.'

Restituez-leur donc aujourd'hui leurs champs, leurs vignes, leurs olivaies et leurs maisons et le centième de l'argent et du blé et du moût et de l'huile, que vous avez reçu d'eux comme intérêt.

12 Then said they: 'We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest.' Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

Alors ils dirent: Nous voulons le restituer et ne rien exiger d'eux, nous voulons nous conformer à ce que tu as dit. Et j'appelai les Prêtres et leur fis jurer d'agir en ce sens.

13 Also I shook out my lap, and said: 'So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.' And all the congregation said: 'Amen', and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

Et je secouai aussi le pan de mon manteau et dis: Qu'ainsi Dieu secoue quiconque n'exécutera pas cette promesse, hors de sa maison et de ses biens, et qu'il soit ainsi secoué et vidé! Alors toute l'Assemblée s'écria: Ainsi soit-il! Et ils louèrent l'Éternel et le peuple agit dans ce sens.

14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

De même, à partir du jour où l'on me préposa comme gouverneur du pays, depuis la vingtième jusqu'à la trente-deuxième année du roi Arthachsastha, douze années durant, ni moi, ni mes frères ne mangeâmes la pension de gouverneur.

15 But the former governors that were before me laid burdens upon the people, and took of them for bread and wine above forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants lorded over the people; but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

Car les premiers gouverneurs, mes prédécesseurs, avaient opprimé le peuple, et reçu de lui du pain et du vin outre quarante sicles d'argent; leurs écuyers aussi tyrannisaient le peuple. Mais moi je n'agis point ainsi, par crainte de Dieu.

16 Yea, also I set hand to the work of this wall, neither bought we any land; and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

Et je m'appliquai fortement à la restauration de ces murs; et nous n'achetâmes point de champs, et tous mes écuyers étaient réunis là pour l'ouvrage.

17 Moreover there were at my table of the Jews and the rulers a hundred and fifty men, beside those that came unto us from among the nations that were round about us.

Et [chaque jour] j'avais à ma table cent cinquante hommes, Juifs et Chefs, outre ceux qui arrivaient chez moi des peuples d'alentour.

18 Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep, also fowls were prepared for me; and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine; yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the service was heavy upon this people.

Et l'ordinaire de chaque jour, un bœuf, six moutons gras et de la volaille, était préparé à mes frères; et aussi de dix jours en dix jours tout le vin en abondance; et avec cela je ne réclamai point le traitement de gouverneur, car le service pesait lourdement sur ce peuple. —

19 Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.

Garde-moi bonne mémoire, ô mon Dieu, de tout ce que j'ai fait pour ce peuple.
