Job 31

1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; how then should I look upon a maid?

Zawarłem przymierze ze swoimi oczami; jak mógłbym więc myśleć o pannie?

2 For what would be the portion of God from above, and the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

Jaki bowiem byłby dział od Boga z góry? I jakie byłoby dziedzictwo od Wszechmocnego z wysoka?

3 Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Czy zatracenie nie jest [przygotowane] dla niegodziwych i sroga pomsta dla czyniących nieprawość?

4 Doth not He see my ways, and count all my steps?

Czyż on nie widzi moich dróg i nie liczy wszystkich moich kroków?

5 If I have walked with vanity, and my foot hath hasted to deceit —

Jeśli postępowałem kłamliwie, jeśli moja noga spieszyła się do oszustwa;

6 Let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know mine integrity —

To niech zważy mnie na wadze sprawiedliwej i niech Bóg pozna moją prawość.

7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and my heart walked after mine eyes, and if any spot hath cleaved to my hands;

Jeśli moja noga zboczyła z drogi i moje serce poszło za moimi oczami, i jeśli jakaś zmaza przylgnęła do moich rąk;

8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

Wtedy niech ja sieję, a inny spożywa, niech moje latorośle będą wykorzenione.

9 If my heart have been enticed unto a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbour's door;

Jeśli moje serce uwiodła kobieta i jeśli czyhałem pod drzwiami swego bliźniego;

10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

To niech moja żona mieli innemu i niech inni się nad nią schylają.

11 For that were a heinous crime; yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

[Jest] to bowiem haniebny czyn, karygodna nieprawość;

12 For it is a fire that consumeth unto destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

To jest ogień, który pożera aż do zatracenia i może wykorzenić cały mój dobytek.

13 If I did despise the cause of my man-servant, or of my maid-servant, when they contended with me —

Jeśli zlekceważyłem sprawę swojego sługi albo swojej służącej, gdy wiedli spór ze mną;

14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when He remembereth, what shall I answer Him?

Co zrobię, gdy Bóg powstanie? Gdy mnie nawiedzi, co mu odpowiem?

15 Did not He that made me in the womb make him? And did not One fashion us in the womb?

Czy ten, który mnie stworzył w łonie, nie stworzył też jego? Czy nie on jeden ukształtował nas w łonie?

16 If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

Jeśli odmówiłem prośbie ubogich i jeśli zasmuciłem oczy wdowy;

17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof —

Jeśli sam jadłem swoją kromkę [i] nie jadła z niej sierota;

18 Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother's womb.

(Od swojej młodości bowiem wychowywałem ją jak ojciec, a od łona swojej matki prowadziłem [wdowę]);

19 If I have seen any wanderer in want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

Jeśli widziałem ginącego z powodu braku ubrania albo biedaka bez okrycia;

20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

Jeśli jego biodra nie błogosławiły mi dlatego, że się zagrzał wełną moich owiec;

21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;

Jeśli podniosłem rękę przeciwko sierocie, gdy widziałem w bramie swoją pomoc;

22 Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Wtedy niech odpadnie mój bark od karku, a niech moje ramię wyjdzie ze stawu.

23 For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of His majesty I could do nothing.

Bałem się bowiem klęski od Boga, a przed jego majestatem nie mógłbym [się ostać].

24 If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold: 'Thou art my confidence';

Jeśli pokładałem w złocie swoją nadzieję, a do czystego złota mówiłem: [Ty jesteś] moją ufnością;

25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

Jeśli radowałem się ze swojego wielkiego bogactwa i [tego], że moja ręka nabyła wiele;

26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

Jeśli patrzyłem na słońce, gdy świeciło, i na księżyc, gdy sunął wspaniale;

27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, and my mouth hath kissed my hand;

A moje serce dało się uwieść potajemnie i moje usta całowały moją rękę;

28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; for I should have lied to God that is above.

I to byłaby nieprawość karygodna, bo zaparłbym się Boga z wysoka.

29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or exulted when evil found him —

Jeśli cieszyłem się z upadku tego, który mnie nienawidzi, jeśli wyniosłem się, gdy mu się źle wiodło;

30 Yea, I suffered not my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse.

(Nawet nie pozwoliłem zgrzeszyć swoim ustom, pragnąc przekleństwa na jego duszy);

31 If the men of my tent said not: 'Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat?'

Czy ludzie z mojego namiotu nie mówili: Obyśmy mieli z jego mięsa! Nie możemy się najeść.

32 The stranger did not lodge in the street; my doors I opened to the roadside.

Obcy nie nocował na dworze, swoje drzwi otwierałem podróżnemu.

33 If after the manner of men I covered my transgressions, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom —

Jeśli ukrywałem swoje przestępstwa jak Adam i chowałem w zanadrzu swoją nieprawość;

34 Because I feared the great multitude, and the most contemptible among families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door.

Czy strach przed wielką zgrają albo pogarda bliskich przeraziły mnie, abym milczał i nie wychodził [za] drzwi?

35 Oh that I had one to hear me! — Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me — and that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

Obym miał kogoś, kto by mnie wysłuchał! Oto moja prośba, [aby] Wszechmogący odpowiedział mi i aby mój wróg napisał księgę.

36 Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown.

Czy nie nosiłbym jej na swoim ramieniu i nie przywiązałbym jej sobie [jak] koronę?

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

Oznajmiłbym mu liczbę swoich kroków; zbliżyłbym się do niego jak książę.

38 If my land cry out against me, and the furrows thereof weep together;

Jeśli moja ziemia wołała przeciwko mnie, jeśli razem z nią płakały jej bruzdy;

39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the tillers thereof to be disappointed —

Jeśli spożywałem z jej plonów bez zapłaty, jeśli jej właścicieli pozbawiłem życia;

40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and noisome weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

Niech rosną ciernie zamiast pszenicy i sam kąkol zamiast jęczmienia. Skończyły się słowa Hioba.
