Job 29
1 And Job again took up his parable, and said:
Siguió Job explicando y dijo:
2 Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;
“¡Ojalá volviera a ser como en los meses pasados, como en los días en que Dios me protegía,
3 When His lamp shined above my head, and by His light I walked through darkness;
cuando su luz brillaba sobre mi cabeza, y su luz me guiaba en las tinieblas!
4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the converse of God was upon my tent;
¿Cuál era en la madurez de mi vida, cuando era amigo de Dios y Este guardaba mi morada;
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were about me;
cuando el Todopoderoso estaba conmigo, y me rodeaban mis hijos;
6 When my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil!
cuando lavaba mis pies con leche, y de la roca me brotaban ríos de aceite.
7 When I went forth to the gate unto the city, when I prepared my seat in the broad place,
(En aquel tiempo) cuando yo salía a la puerta de la ciudad, y en la plaza establecía mi asiento,
8 The young men saw me and hid themselves, and the aged rose up and stood;
los jóvenes al verme se retiraban, y los ancianos se levantaban, y se mantenían en pie.
9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth;
Los príncipes contenían la palabra, y ponían su mano sobre la boca.
10 The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
Se callaba la voz de los magnates y su lengua se pegaba a su paladar.
11 For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me;
El que me escuchaba, me llamaba dichoso, y el ojo que me veía, daba señas en favor mío.
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him.
Yo libraba al pobre que pedía auxilio, y al huérfano que no tenía sostén.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
Sobre mí venía la bendición del que hubiera perecido, y yo alegraba el corazón de la viuda.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed itself with me; my justice was as a robe and a diadem.
Me revestía de justicia, y esta me revestía a mí, mi equidad me servía de manto y tiara.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
Era yo ojo para el ciego, y pie para el cojo,
16 I was a father to the needy; and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.
padre de los pobres, que examinaba con diligencia aun la causa del desconocido.
17 And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.
Quebraba los colmillos del malvado, y de sus dientes arrancaba la presa.
18 Then I said: 'I shall die with my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the phoenix;
Por lo cual me decía: «Moriré en mi nido, y mis días serán tan numerosos como la arena;
19 My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew shall lie all night upon my branch;
mi raíz se extenderá hacia las aguas, y el rocío pasará la noche en mis hojas.
20 My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow shall be renewed in my hand.'
Será siempre nueva en mí la gloria mía, y mi arco se renovará en mi mano.»
21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel.
A mí me escuchaban sin perder la paciencia, aguardando silenciosamente mi consejo.
22 After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
Después de hablar ya no respondía nadie, porque (cual rocío) caían sobre ellos mis palabras.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
Me esperaban como se espera la lluvia, abrían su boca como a la lluvia tardía.
24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
Si les sonreía estaban admirados, y se alegraban de esa luz de mi rostro.
25 I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
Yo decidía su conducta y me sentaba a la cabecera, habitaba como un rey entre sus tropas, cual consolador un medio de los afligidos.”
