Exodus 1

1 NOW THESE are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; every man came with his household:

Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron en Egipto con Jacob, cada uno con su familia:

2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;

Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá,

3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;

Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín,

4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; and Joseph was in Egypt already.

Todos los descendientes nacidos de Jacob eran setenta almas. José estaba ya en Egipto.

6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

Luego murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.

7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

Mas los hijos de Israel crecieron y se multiplicaron, y llegaron a ser numerosos y fuertes, y se llenó de ellos el país.

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

Entretanto se alzó sobre Egipto un nuevo rey, que nada sabía de José;

9 And he said unto his people: 'Behold, the people of the children of Israel are too many and too mighty for us;

el cual dijo a su pueblo: “Mirad, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros.

10 come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there befalleth us any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land.'

Tomemos, pues, precauciones contra él, no sea que siga multiplicándose, y en caso de venir sobre nosotros una guerra, se asocie también él a nuestros enemigos para combatirnos, y salga (después) del país.”

11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses.

Por lo cual pusieron sobre (Israel), sobrestantes de trabajos a fin de oprimirlos con sus cargas; y así edificaron para el Faraón ciudades almacenes: Pitom y Ramesés.

12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were adread because of the children of Israel.

Pero cuanto más los oprimían, tanto más crecían y tanto más se multiplicaban, de modo que (los egipcios) tomaron aversión a los hijos de Israel.

13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour.

Entonces los egipcios redujeron a cruel servidumbre a los hijos de Israel,

14 And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; in all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigour.

y les amargaron la vida con duros trabajos de arcilla y ladrillos, toda suerte de labores del campo y toda clase de servidumbre con que los oprimían por fuerza.

15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah;

El rey de Egipto dio también orden a las parteras de las hebreas, de las cuales una se llamaba Sifrá, y la otra Puá,

16 and he said: 'When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, ye shall look upon the birthstool: if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.'

diciéndoles: “Cuando asistáis a las hebreas en sus partos, averiguad el sexo; si es niño, matadlo; mas si es niña, vivirá.”

17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive.

Pero las parteras temían a Dios, y no hicieron como les había mandado el rey de Egipto, sino que dejaban con vida a los niños.

18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them: 'Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?'

Por lo cual llamó el rey de Egipto a las parteras y les dijo: “¿Por qué hacéis esto y dejáis con vida a los niños?”

19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh: 'Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them.'

Respondieron las parteras al Faraón: “Porque las hebreas no son como las egipcias. Son robustas, y antes que a ellas llegue la partera, ya han dado a luz.”

20 And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

Recompensó Dios a las parteras; y se multiplicó el pueblo y se hizo muy poderoso.

21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that He made them houses.

Y por haber temido las parteras a Dios, Él les dio numerosa prole.

22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying: 'Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.'

Entonces dio el Faraón a todo su pueblo esta orden: “Todo niño que naciere (a los hebreos) lo echaréis al río; mas a toda niña dejaréis con vida.”
