Exodus 17
1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their stages, according to the commandment of the LORD, and encamped in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink.
Partió todo el pueblo de los hijos de Israel del desierto de Sin, haciendo sus jornadas según ordenaba Yahvé; y acamparon en Rafidim, donde el pueblo no tenía agua que beber.
2 Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said: 'Give us water that we may drink.' And Moses said unto them: 'Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye try the LORD?'
Por lo cual el pueblo se querelló contra Moisés, diciendo: “Danos agua de beber.” Les respondió Moisés: “¿Por qué altercáis conmigo? ¿Por qué tentáis a Yahvé?”
3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said: 'Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?'
Pero el pueblo sufriendo allí sed de agua, siguió murmurando contra Moisés, y dijo: “¿Por qué nos has hecho salir de Egipto, para matarnos de sed, a nosotros, a nuestros hijos y a nuestro ganado?”
4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying: 'What shall I do unto this people? they are almost ready to stone me.'
Clamó entonces Moisés, a Yahvé y dijo: “¿Qué hago yo con este pueblo? Falta poco que me apedreen.”
5 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thy hand, and go.
Respondió Yahvé a Moisés: “Pasa delante del pueblo, y lleva contigo algunos de los ancianos de Israel; y toma en tu mano la vara con que heriste el río y anda.
6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.' And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
He aquí que Yo estaré enfrente de ti, allá sobre la peña, en Horeb; golpearás la peña, y saldrá de ella agua para que beba el pueblo.” Moisés lo hizo así a los ojos de los ancianos de Israel.
7 And the name of the place was called Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tried the LORD, saying: 'Is the LORD among us, or not?'
Y dio a aquel lugar el nombre de Masá y Meribá, a causa de la querella de los hijos de Israel, y por haber ellos tentado a Yahvé, diciendo: “¿Está Yahvé en medio de nosotros, o no?”
8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
Vino después Amalec e hizo guerra contra Israel en Rafidim.
9 And Moses said unto Joshua: 'Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.'
Y dijo Moisés a Josué: “Escógenos hombres, y sal a combatir contra Amalec. Mañana yo me colocaré sobre la cima del monte, con la vara de Dios en mi mano.”
10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Hizo Josué como le había dicho Moisés, y peleó contra Amalec. Moisés, empero, y Aarón y Hur subieron a la cima del monte.
11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
Y sucedió que mientras Moisés tenía alzada su mano, prevalecía Israel; y cuando bajaba su mano, prevalecía Amalec.
12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
Mas como las manos de Moisés se cansasen, tomaron ellos una piedra, se la pusieron debajo, y se sentó sobre ella, en tanto que Aarón y Hur le sostenían las manos, uno por un lado, y otro por el otro. Así quedaron firmes sus manos hasta ponerse el sol.
13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
Y Josué derrotó a Amalec y a su pueblo al filo de la espada.
14 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Write this for a memorial in the book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.'
Entonces dijo Yahvé a Moisés: “Escribe esto para recuerdo en un libro, y notifica a Josué que Yo borraré por completo la memoria de Amalec de debajo del cielo.”
15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Adonai-nissi.
Después erigió Moisés un altar, al cual puso por nombre Yahvé Nisí,
16 And he said: 'The hand upon the throne of the LORD: the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.'
diciendo: “Por haber levantado la mano contra el trono de Yahvé, peleará Yahvé con Amalec de generación en generación.”
