Deuteronomy 9

1 Hear, O Israel: thou art to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

Escucha, Israel, tú vas a pasar hoy el Jordán, para conquistar pueblos más grandes y más fuertes que tú, ciudades grandes, cuyas murallas llegan hasta el cielo:

2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say: 'Who can stand before the sons of Anak?'

un pueblo grande y de alta estatura, los hijos de los enaceos, que tú conoces, y de quienes has oído decir: ¿Quién puede mantenerse firme delante de los hijos de Enac?

3 Know therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is He who goeth over before thee as a devouring fire; He will destroy them, and He will bring them down before thee; so shalt thou drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as the LORD hath spoken unto thee.

Hoy has de saber que Yahvé, tu Dios, Él mismo irá delante de ti, cual fuego devorador. Él los destruirá y los doblegará delante de ti, y tú los desposeerás y acabarás pronto con ellos, según Yahvé te lo ha dicho.

4 Speak not thou in thy heart, after that the LORD thy God hath thrust them out from before thee, saying: 'For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land'; whereas for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.

Después de que Yahvé los haya echado de tu presencia, no digas en tu corazón: Por mi justicia Yahvé me ha puesto en posesión de este país, siendo cierto que por la maldad de aquellas naciones Yahvé las expulsa delante de ti.

5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thy heart, dost thou go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that He may establish the word which the LORD swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

No por tu justicia ni por la rectitud de tu corazón vas a entrar en posesión de su país; al contrario, por la maldad de estas naciones Yahvé, tu Dios, las expulsa de tu presencia, y para cumplir la promesa que juró a tus padres, a Abrahán, a Isaac y a Jacob.

6 Know therefore that it is not for thy righteousness that the LORD thy God giveth thee this good land to possess it; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

Sabe, pues, que no por tu justicia, Yahvé, tu Dios, te va a dar en posesión esta excelente tierra; pues eres un pueblo de dura cerviz.

7 Remember, forget thou not, how thou didst make the LORD thy God wroth in the wilderness; from the day that thou didst go forth out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.

Acuérdate, y no olvides cómo provocaste la ira de Yahvé, tu Dios, en el desierto. Desde el día que saliste de la tierra de Egipto hasta vuestra llegada a este lugar, habéis sido rebeldes a Yahvé.

8 Also in Horeb ye made the LORD wroth, and the LORD was angered with you to have destroyed you.

Ya en el Horeb irritasteis a Yahvé, y se airó Yahvé contra vosotros y quiso destruiros.

9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water.

Cuando yo subí al monte para recibir las tablas de piedra, las tablas de la alianza que Yahvé hizo con vosotros, y estuve en el monte cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, sin comer pan ni beber agua,

10 And the LORD delivered unto me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spoke with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

dióme Yahvé las dos tablas de piedra, escritas con el dedo de Dios, que contenían todas las palabras que Yahvé os había hablado en el monte, de en medio del fuego, el día de la asamblea.

11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

Al fin de los cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, Yahvé me entregó las dos tablas de piedra, las tablas de la alianza.

12 And the LORD said unto me: 'Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people that thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have dealt corruptly; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.'

Y me dijo Yahvé: ‘Levántate, desciende presto de aquí, pues tu pueblo que sacaste de Egipto ha hecho maldad, se han apartado muy pronto del camino que Yo les prescribí; se han fabricado una imagen fundida.’

13 Furthermore the LORD spoke unto me, saying: 'I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people;

Y me habló Yahvé, diciendo: ‘He visto este pueblo, y he aquí que es un pueblo de dura cerviz.

14 let Me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.'

Déjame que los destruya y borre su nombre de debajo del cielo, y haré de ti una nación más fuerte y más numerosa que ellos.’

15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire; and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.

Me volví y descendí del monte, que estaba ardiendo, teniendo en mis manos las dos tablas de la alianza.

16 And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the LORD your God; ye had made you a molten calf; ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the LORD had commanded you.

Y miré, y he aquí que habíais pecado contra Yahvé, vuestro Dios; os habíais hecho un becerro fundido; tan pronto os habíais apartado del camino que Yahvé os había ordenado.

17 And I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.

Tomé entonces las dos tablas y las arrojé de mis manos, haciéndolas pedazos ante vuestros ojos.

18 And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water; because of all your sin which ye sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him.

Y me postré delante de Yahvé, como la vez primera, cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, sin comer pan ni beber agua, a causa de todos los pecados que habíais cometido, obrando mal a los ojos de Yahvé y provocando su ira;

19 For I was in dread of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me that time also.

porque estaba sobrecogido de temor al ver la ira y el furor que Yahvé había concebido contra vosotros, hasta querer aniquilaros. Mas me oyó Yahvé también esta vez.

20 Moreover the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him; and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.

Y estando Yahvé irritado en gran manera contra Aarón, hasta querer exterminarlo, yo intercedí en aquel tiempo también por Aarón.

21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and beat it in pieces, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust; and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount. —

Luego tomé vuestro pecado, el becerro que habíais hecho, lo entregué al fuego, y moliéndolo bien lo hice pedazos hasta reducirlo a polvo fino, el cual eché en el arroyo que baja del monte.

22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye made the LORD wroth.

También, en Taberá, y en Masá, y en Kibrot-Hataavá, habéis provocado la ira de Yahvé.

23 And when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying: 'Go up and possess the land which I have given you'; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed Him not, nor hearkened to His voice.

Y cuando Yahvé os hizo partir de Cadesbarnea, diciendo: ‘Subid, tomad posesión de la tierra que os he dado’, os rebelasteis contra la orden de Yahvé, vuestro Dios, y no le creísteis, ni escuchasteis su voz.

24 Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you. —

Habéis sido rebeldes a Yahvé desde el día en que os conocí.

25 So I fell down before the LORD the forty days and forty nights that I fell down; because the LORD had said He would destroy you.

Me postré, pues, ante Yahvé y quedé postrado cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, porque Yahvé había dicho que os iba a aniquilar.

26 And I prayed unto the LORD, and said: 'O Lord GOD, destroy not Thy people and Thine inheritance, that Thou hast redeemed through Thy greatness, that Thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Y orando a Yahvé, dije: ‘Señor, Yahvé, no destruyas a tu pueblo y tu heredad que Tú redimiste con tu grandeza, sacándolo de Egipto con mano poderosa.

27 Remember Thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin;

Acuérdate de tus siervos, de Abrahán, de Isaac, y de Jacob. No mires la dureza de este pueblo, su maldad, su pecado:

28 lest the land whence Thou broughtest us out say: Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which He promised unto them, and because He hated them, He hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.

no sea que digan los de la tierra de donde nos sacaste: Por no poder introducirlos Yahvé en la tierra que les había prometido, y por su odio hacia ellos, los ha sacado fuera para hacerlos morir en el desierto.

29 Yet they are Thy people and Thine inheritance, that Thou didst bring out by Thy great power and by Thy outstretched arm.'

Pues son tu pueblo y tu herencia, que Tú has sacado con tu gran poder y con tu brazo extendido.’
