2 Samuel 18
1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
David pasó revista a las tropas que tenía consigo, y estableció sobre ellos jefes de miles y jefes de cientos.
2 And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people: 'I will surely go forth with you myself also.'
Y puso David una tercera parte de las tropas bajo el mando de Joab, otra tercera parte bajo el mando de Abisai, hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y una tercera parte bajo el mando de Etai, el geteo. Y dijo el rey a las tropas: “Yo saldré también con vosotros.”
3 But the people said: 'Thou shalt not go forth; for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us; but thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succour us out of the city.'
Mas la gente le respondió: “De ningún modo saldrás tú; pues aun cuando nosotros huyéramos no les importaría mucho; y si muriere la mitad de nosotros, nada les aprovecharía; porque tú equivales a diez mil de nosotros. Más vale, pues, que tú desde la ciudad puedas venir en nuestro socorro.”
4 And the king said unto them: 'What seemeth you best I will do.' And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.
Respondió el rey: “Haré lo que bien os parezca.” Y se apostó el rey junto a la puerta, en tanto que toda la gente iba saliendo en grupos de cien y de mil.
5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying: 'Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.' And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
Entonces dio el rey a Joab y a Abisai y a Etai esta orden: “¡Conservadme al joven Absalón!” Y todo el pueblo oyó cuando el rey dio a todos los jefes esta orden respecto a Absalón.
6 So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.
Salió, pues, la gente al campo contra Israel; y se libró la batalla en el bosque de Efraím.
7 And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.
Allí fue derrotado el pueblo de Israel por los soldados de David, y en aquel día se hizo allí una gran matanza, de veinte mil hombres.
8 For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
La batalla se extendió allí sobre toda aquella región, y en aquel día fueron más los que devoró el bosque que los que murieron al filo de espada.
9 And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth, and his head caught hold of the terebinth, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went on.
Y sucedió que Absalón, al encontrarse con los soldados de David, iba montado en un mulo; y pasando el mulo debajo del ramaje tupido de un gran terebinto, se enredó la cabellera (de Absalón) en el terebinto; y quedó suspendido entre el cielo y la tierra, mientras el mulo que tenía debajo de sí, seguía adelante.
10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said: 'Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in a terebinth.'
Un hombre lo vio, el cual dio aviso a Joab, diciendo: “He aquí que he visto a Absalón colgado de un terebinto.”
11 And Joab said unto the man that told him: 'And, behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have had to give thee ten pieces of silver, and a girdle.'
Dijo entonces Joab al hombre que le dio la noticia: “Ya que le viste, ¿por qué no le abatiste allí mismo a tierra? A fe mía, te habría dado diez siclos de plata y un tahalí.”
12 And the man said unto Joab: 'Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying: Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
Pero aquel hombre contestó a Joab: “Aunque se pesaran en mi mano mil siclos de plata, no la alargaría contra el hijo del rey; pues, oyéndolo nosotros, mandó el rey a ti, a Abisai, y a Etai, diciendo: «¡Conservadme al joven Absalón!»
13 Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against mine own life — and there is no matter hid from the king — then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof.'
Si yo hubiera hecho traición contra su vida, nada de eso quedaría oculto al rey, y tú mismo te pondrías contra mí.”
14 Then said Joab: 'I may not tarry thus with thee.' And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the terebinth.
Respondió Joab: “No es así, pero pierdo tiempo contigo.” Y tomando tres dardos en su mano los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, el cual vivía aún pendiente del terebinto.
15 And ten young men that bore Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
Tras esto, diez jóvenes, escuderos de Joab, cercaron a Absalón, lo hirieron y lo mataron.
16 And Joab blew the horn, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people.
Entonces Joab tocó la trompeta y el pueblo desistió de perseguir a Israel, pues Joab tenía compasión del pueblo.
17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his tent. —
Luego tomaron a Absalón y le echaron en un gran hoyo en el bosque, levantando sobre él un enorme montón de piedras. Y todo Israel huyó, cada cual a su tienda.
18 Now Absalom in his life-time had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king's dale; for he said: 'I have no son to keep my name in remembrance'; and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom's monument unto this day.
Durante su vida Absalón había tomado y erigido para sí el monumento que está en el Valle del Rey; porque se decía: “No tengo hijo que conserve la memoria de mi nombre.” Dio al monumento su propio nombre, y se llama “Mano de Absalón” hasta el día de hoy.
19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok: 'Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.'
Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc, dijo: “Iré corriendo para dar al rey la buena noticia de que Yahvé le ha hecho justicia librándolo de las manos de sus enemigos.”
20 And Joab said unto him: 'Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day; but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, forasmuch as the king's son is dead.'
Joab le contestó: “Hoy no serías portador de buenas nuevas; podrás serlo en otra ocasión, pero hoy no llevarías noticias buenas, por cuanto ha muerto el hijo del rey.”
21 Then said Joab to the Cushite: 'Go tell the king what thou hast seen.' And the Cushite bowed down unto Joab, and ran.
Dijo, pues, Joab al cusita: “Ve y anuncia al rey lo que has visto.” El cusita se prosternó delante de Joab y echó a correr.
22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab: 'But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite.' And Joab said: 'Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings?'
Mas Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc, volvió a decir a Joab: “Sea lo que fuere; déjame correr tras el cusita.” Respondió Joab: “¿Para qué quieres correr tú, hijo mío? pues no se te darán albricias.”
23 'But come what may, said he, I will run.' And he said unto him: 'Run.' Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and overran the Cushite.
“Sea lo que fuere, yo correré”, replicó él y (Joab) le dijo: “Corre.” Corrió, pues, Aquimaas por el camino del valle, y se adelantó al cusita.
24 Now David sat between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
Estaba David sentado entre las dos puertas. En ese momento el atalaya que había ido al techo de la puerta, sobre el muro, alzó los ojos y miró, y divisó a un hombre solo que venía corriendo.
25 And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said: 'If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth.' And he came apace, and drew near.
El atalaya dio voces y se lo avisó al rey. El rey respondió: “Si está solo, tiene buenas noticias en su boca.” Mientras este seguía acercándose,
26 And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called unto the porter, and said: 'Behold another man running alone.' And the king said: 'He also bringeth tidings.'
divisó el atalaya a otro hombre que venía corriendo, y gritó hacia la puerta, diciendo: “He aquí (otro) hombre que corre solo.” Y dijo el rey: “También este trae buenas noticias.”
27 And the watchman said: 'I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.' And the king said: 'He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.'
Añadió el atalaya: “Veo que la manera de correr del primero es la de Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc.” Respondió el rey: “Es hombre de bien y viene con buenas nuevas.”
28 And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king: 'All is well.' And he bowed down before the king with his face to the earth, and said: 'Blessed be the LORD thy God, who hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.'
En esto, Aquimaas exclamó y dijo al rey: “¡Salud!” Y postrándose ante el rey, rostro a tierra, dijo: “¡Bendito sea Yahvé, tu Dios, que ha entregado a los hombres que alzaron su mano contra mi señor, el rey!”
29 And the king said: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?' And Ahimaaz answered: 'When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.'
El rey preguntó: “Y el joven Absalón, ¿está bien?” Aquimaas respondió: “Yo vi un gran alboroto cuando Joab envió al siervo del rey y a mí tu siervo, mas no supe qué era.”
30 And the king said: 'Turn aside, and stand here.' And he turned aside, and stood still.
Dijo entonces el rey: “Pasa y ponte ahí.” Y él pasó y permaneció allí de pie.
31 And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said: 'Tidings for my lord the king; for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.'
Y he aquí que entretanto llegó el cusita. Y dijo el cusita: “Sepa el rey, mi señor, la buena noticia: Yahvé te ha hecho justicia hoy, librándote de mano de todos los que se habían levantado contra ti.”
32 And the king said unto the Cushite: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?' And the Cushite answered: 'The enemies of my lord the king and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.'
Preguntó el rey al cusita: “¿Está bien el joven Absalón?” Contestó el cusita: “¡Tengan la suerte de ese joven los enemigos de mi señor, el rey, y todos los que para mal se han levantado contra ti!”
33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, thus he said: 'O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!'
El rey, profundamente conmovido, subió al aposento que había sobre la puerta y echó a llorar, y andando exclamaba: “¡Hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Hijo mío! ¡Hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Ojalá hubiera yo muerto en lugar de ti! ¡Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!”
