1 Samuel 14

1 Now it fell upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bore his armour: 'Come and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on yonder side. But he told not his father.

Un jour, Jonathas, fils de Saül, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: « Viens, et passons jusqu’au poste des Philistins, qui est là, de l’autre côté. » Et il n’en dit rien à son père.

2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate-tree which is in Migron; and the people that were with him were about six hundred men,

— Saül se tenait à l’extrémité de Gabaa, sous le grenadier de Magron, et le peuple qui était avec lui était d’environ six cents hommes.

3 and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of the LORD in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

Achias, fils d’Achitob, frère d’Ichabod, fils de Phinées, fils d’Héli, prêtre de Yahweh à Silo, portait l’éphod. Le peuple ne savait pas non plus que Jonathas s’en fût allé.

4 And between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side, and a rocky crag on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

Entre les passages par lesquels Jonathas cherchait à arriver au poste des Philistins, il y avait une dent de rocher d’un côté et une dent de rocher de l’autre côté, l’une nommée Bosès, et l’autre nommée Séné.

5 The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmas, and the other on the south in front of Geba.

L’une de ces dents se dresse au nord, vis-à-vis de Machmas, et l’autre au midi, vis-à-vis de Gabée. —

6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour: 'Come and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us; for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.'

Jonathas dit donc au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: « Viens, et passons jusqu’au poste de ces incirconcis. Peut-être Yahweh agira-t-il pour nous; car rien n’empêche Yahweh de sauver, soit par un nombre grand, soit par un petit nombre. »

7 And his armour-bearer said unto him: 'Do all that is in thy heart; turn thee, behold I am with thee according to thy heart.'

Son écuyer lui répondit: « Fais tout ce que tu as dans le cœur; va où tu voudras, me voici avec toi prêt à te suivre. »

8 Then said Jonathan: 'Behold, we will pass over unto the men, and we will disclose ourselves unto them.

Jonathas dit: « Voici, nous passerons vers ces hommes et nous nous montrerons vers eux.

9 If they say thus unto us: Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

S’ils nous disent: Arrêtez, jusqu’à ce que nous venions à vous! nous resterons en place et nous ne monterons pas vers eux.

10 But if they say thus: Come up unto us; then we will go up; for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand; and this shall be the sign unto us.'

Mais s’ils disent: Montez vers nous! nous monterons, car Yahweh les a livrés entre nos mains. Cela sera pour nous le signe. »

11 And both of them disclosed themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said: 'Behold Hebrews coming forth out of the holes where they hid themselves.'

Ils se montrèrent tous deux au poste des Philistins, et les Philistins dirent: « Voici les Hébreux qui sortent des trous où ils s’étaient cachés. »

12 And the men of the garrison spoke to Jonathan and his armour-bearer, and said: 'Come up to us, and we will show you a thing.' And Jonathan said unto his armour-bearer: 'Come up after me; for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.'

Et les hommes du poste, s’adressant à Jonathas et à son écuyer, dirent: « Montez vers nous, et nous vous ferons savoir quelque chose. » Et Jonathas dit à son écuyer: « Monte après moi, car Yahweh les a livrés entre nos mains. »

13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armour-bearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan; and his armour-bearer slew them after him.

Et Jonathas monta, sur les mains et sur les pieds, suivi de son écuyer. Les Philistins tombaient devant Jonathas, et son écuyer tuait derrière lui.

14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armour-bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre of land.

Ce premier massacre que firent Jonathas et son écuyer fut d’environ vingt hommes, sur la longueur d’un demi-sillon d’un arpent de terre.

15 And there was a trembling in the camp in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled; and the earth quaked; so it grew into a terror from God.

L’épouvante se répandit dans le camp des Philistins, dans la campagne et dans tout le peuple; le poste aussi et l’armée de destruction furent saisis de peur; la terre trembla: c’était une terreur de Dieu.

16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeath-benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went hither and thither.

Les sentinelles de Saül qui étaient à Gabaa de Benjamin virent comment la multitude des Philistins se dispersait et allait de côté et d’autre.

17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him: 'Number now, and see who is gone from us.' And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armour-bearer were not there.

Saül dit au peuple qui était avec lui: « Faites la revue et voyez qui s’en est allé d’avec nous. » Ils firent la revue, et voici qu’il n’y avait ni Jonathas ni son écuyer.

18 And Saul said unto Ahijah: 'Bring hither the ark of God.' For the ark of God was there at that time with the children of Israel.

Et Saül dit à Achias: « Fais approcher l’arche de Dieu. » — Car l’arche de Dieu était en ce jour-là avec les enfants d’Israël. —

19 And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said unto the priest: 'Withdraw thy hand.'

Pendant que Saül parlait au prêtre, le tumulte qui se faisait dans le camp des Philistins allait croissant; et Saül dit au prêtre: « Retire ta main. »

20 And Saul and all the people that were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle; and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

Puis Saül et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, s’étant rassemblés, s’avancèrent jusqu’au lieu du combat, et voici que l’épée de l’un était tournée contre l’autre, et la confusion était extrême.

21 Now the Hebrews that were with the Philistines as beforetime, and that went up with them into the camp round about; even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

Les Hébreux qui étaient auparavant avec les Philistins, étant montés avec eux au camp tout autour, se mirent eux aussi du côté de ceux d’Israël qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathas.

22 Likewise all the men of Israel that had hid themselves in the hill-country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

Tous les hommes d’Israël qui s’étaient cachés dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, apprenant la fuite des Philistins, s’attachèrent également à les poursuivre en combattant.

23 So the LORD saved Israel that day; and the battle passed on as far as Beth-aven.

C’est ainsi que Yahweh délivra Israël ce jour-là. Le combat se poursuivit jusqu’à Beth-Aven.

24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day; but Saul adjured the people, saying: 'Cursed be the man that eateth any food until it be evening, and I be avenged on mine enemies.' So none of the people tasted food.

Les hommes d’Israël étaient à bout de forces en ce jour-là. Saül fit jurer le peuple, en disant: « Maudit soit l’homme qui prendra de la nourriture jusqu’au soir, jusqu’à ce que je me sois vengé de mes ennemis! » Et personne ne goûta de nourriture.

25 And all the people came into the forest; and there was honey upon the ground.

Tout le peuple vint dans la forêt, et il y avait du miel à la surface du sol.

26 And when the people were come unto the forest, behold a flow of honey; but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.

Et le peuple entra dans la forêt, il vit du miel qui coulait; mais nul ne porta la main à la bouche, car le peuple avait crainte du serment.

27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath; and he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened.

Mais Jonathas n’avait pas entendu lorsque son père avait fait faire le serment au peuple; il avança l’extrémité du bâton qu’il avait à la main et, l’ayant plongé dans un rayon de miel, il ramena sa main à sa bouche, et ses yeux furent éclaircis.

28 Then answered one of the people, and said: 'Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying: Cursed be the man that eateth food this day; and the people are faint.'

Alors quelqu’un du peuple, prenant la parole, lui dit: « Ton père a fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l’homme qui prendra de la nourriture aujourd’hui! Et le peuple était épuisé. »

29 Then said Jonathan: 'My father hath troubled the land; see, I pray you, how mine eyes are brightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

Jonathas dit: « Mon père a causé le malheur du peuple. Voyez donc comme mes yeux sont clairs, parce que j’ai goûté un peu de ce miel!

30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to-day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? had there not been then a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?'

Ah! Si le peuple avait mangé aujourd’hui du butin trouvé chez ses ennemis, combien la défaite des Philistins n’aurait-elle pas été plus grande! »

31 And they smote of the Philistines that day from Michmas to Aijalon; and the people were very faint.

Ils battirent ce jour-là les Philistins depuis Machmas jusqu’à Ajalon, et le peuple était tout défaillant.

32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground; and the people did eat them with the blood.

Le peuple se jeta sur le butin et, ayant pris des brebis, des bœufs et des veaux, il les égorgèrent sur la terre, et le peuple en mangea avec le sang.

33 Then they told Saul, saying: 'Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood.' And he said: 'Ye have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone unto me this day.'

On le rapporta à Saül, en disant: « Voici que le peuple pèche contre Yahweh, en mangeant la chair avec le sang. » Saül dit: « Vous avez commis une infidélité, roulez à l’instant vers moi une grande pierre. »

34 And Saul said: 'Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them: Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood.' And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

Et Saül dit: « Dispersez-vous parmi le peuple, et dites-leur: Amenez-moi chacun votre bœuf et chacun votre brebis; égorgez-les ici; vous en mangerez alors et vous ne pécherez pas contre Yahweh en mangeant avec le sang. » Et chacun parmi tout le peuple amena pendant la nuit son bœuf par la main, et l’égorgea là.

35 And Saul built an altar unto the LORD; the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

Saül bâtit un autel à Yahweh; ce fut le premier autel qu’il éleva pour Yahweh.

36 And Saul said: 'Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.' And they said: 'Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee.' Then said the priest: 'Let us draw near hither unto God.'

Saül dit: « Descendons, pendant qu’il fait nuit, à la poursuite des Philistins, pillons les jusqu’à ce que luise le matin, et n’en laissons pas survivre un seul. » Ils dirent: « Fais tout ce qui te semblera bon. » Mais le grand prêtre dit: « Approchons-nous ici de Dieu. »

37 And Saul asked counsel of God: 'Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt Thou deliver them into the hand of Israel?' But He answered him not that day.

Et Saül consulta Dieu: « Descendrai-je à la poursuite des Philistins? Les livrerez-vous entre les mains d’Israël? » Et Yahweh ne lui donna pas de réponse ce jour-là.

38 And Saul said: 'Draw nigh hither, all ye chiefs of the people; and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

Saül dit: « Approchez ici, vous tous, chefs du peuple; recherchez et voyez quel est le péché qui a été commis aujourd’hui.

39 For, as the LORD liveth, who saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.' But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

Car, aussi vrai que Yahweh, le libérateur d’Israël, est vivant, le péché fût-il sur mon fils Jonathas, il mourra. » Et dans tout le peuple personne ne lui répondit.

40 Then said he unto all Israel: 'Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.' And the people said unto Saul: 'Do what seemeth good unto thee.'

Il dit à tout Israël: « Vous, mettez-vous d’un côté, et moi et mon fils Jonathas nous serons de l’autre côté. » Et le peuple dit à Saül: « Fais ce qui te semblera bon. »

41 Therefore Saul said unto the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Declare the right.' And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot; but the people escaped.

Saül dit à Yahweh: « Dieu d’Israël, fais connaître la vérité! » Jonathas et Saül furent désignés, et le peuple fut libéré.

42 And Saul said: 'Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.' And Jonathan was taken.

Alors Saül dit: « Jetez le sort entre moi et Jonathas, mon fils. » Et Jonathas fut désigné.

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan: 'Tell me what thou hast done.' And Jonathan told him, and said: 'I did certainly taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; here am I: I will die.'

Saül dit à Jonathas: « Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait. » Jonathas le lui déclara, en disant: « J’ai goûté un peu de miel, avec l’extrémité du bâton que j’avais à la main; me voici, je mourrai! »

44 And Saul said: 'God do so and more also; thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.'

Et Saül dit: « Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne meurs pas, Jonathas! »

45 And the people said unto Saul: 'Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? Far from it; as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day.' So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

Le peuple dit à Saül: « Jonathas mourrait donc, lui qui a opéré cette grande délivrance en Israël? Loin de nous! Yahweh est vivant! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de sa tête car c’est avec Dieu qu’il a agi en ce jour. » C’est ainsi que le peuple sauva Jonathas, et il ne mourut point.

46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

Saül monta à Gabaa, sans poursuivre les Philistins et les Philistins regagnèrent leur pays.

47 So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines; and whithersoever he turned himself, he put them to the worse.

Lorsque Saül eut pris possession de la royauté sur Israël, il fit la guerre aux alentours à tous ses ennemis, à Moab, aux enfants, d’Ammon, à Edom, aux rois de Soba et aux Philistins, et, partout où il se tournait, il l’emportait.

48 And he did valiantly, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

Il fit des exploits, battit Amalec et délivra Israël de la main de ceux qui le pillaient.

49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishvi, and Malchi-shua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the first-born Merab, and the name of the younger Michal;

Les fils de Saül étaient Jonathas, Jessui et Melchisua; ses deux filles s’appelaient, l’aînée Mérob, et la plus jeune Michol.

50 and the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz; and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

Le nom de la femme de Saül était Achinoam, fille d’Achimaas. Le nom du chef de son armée était Abner, fils de Ner, oncle de Saül.

51 And Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

Cis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d’Abner, étaient fils d’Abiel.

52 And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

La guerre fut acharnée contre les Philistins pendant tous les jours de Saül, et quand Saül apercevait un homme fort et vaillant, il l’attachait à son service.
