John 11
1 NOW there was a sick man, Lazarus, of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
Il y avait un malade, nommé Lazare, qui était de Béthanie, le village de Marie et de Marthe, sa soeur.
2 (It was the Mary who had anointed the Lord with the balm, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
Ce fut cette Marie qui répandit un parfum sur le Seigneur, et qui lui essuya les pieds avec ses cheveux. Lazare, qui était malade, était son frère.
3 The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
Les soeurs envoyèrent dire à Jésus: «Seigneur, voilà celui que tu aimes qui est malade.» —
4 When Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not for death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.
«Cette maladie n'est pas à la mort, a dit Jésus en l'apprenant, mais elle est pour la gloire de Dieu, et afin que le Fils de Dieu soit glorifié par elle.»
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
Or, Jésus aimait Marthe et sa soeur et Lazare.
6 Then, though he heard he was ill, yet notwithstanding he abode in the same place where he was two days.
Lors donc qu'il eut appris la maladie de celui-ci, il demeura deux jours encore dans le lieu où il se trouvait.
7 But after that he saith to his disciples, Let us go again into Judea.
Après quoi, il dit aux disciples: «Retournons en Judée.» —
8 The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews have just now sought to stone thee; and art thou going thither again?
«Rabbi, lui répondirent-ils, les Juifs te cherchaient tout dernièrement pour te lapider, et tu veux aller de nouveau vers eux!» —
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because he seeth the light of this world.
«N'y a-t-il pas douze heures à la journée, répliqua Jésus; si quelqu'un marche pendant le jour, il ne trébuche pas, parce qu'il voit la lumière de ce monde;
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light with him.
mais s'il marche pendant la nuit, il trébuche, parce que la lumière n'est pas en lui.»
11 These things said he: and after that he saith to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I go to waken him up.
Il parla ainsi; puis il ajouta: «Notre ami Lazare s'est endormi, mais je pars pour le réveiller.» —
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he is asleep, he will recover.
«S'il dort, Seigneur, il sera sauvé», dirent les disciples.
13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they apprehended that he spake of taking rest in sleep.
Or Jésus avait parlé de sa mort; mais ils avaient cru, eux, qu'il parlait du sommeil ordinaire.
14 Then Jesus therefore told them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
Il leur dit alors nettement: «Lazare est mort.
15 And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe; but let us go to him.
Et je me réjouis, à cause de vous, et afin que vous croyiez, de ce que je n'étais pas là. Mais allons auprès de lui.»
16 Then said Thomas, (called Didymus, the twin, ) to his fellow-disciples, Let us go too, that we may die with him.
Sur ce mot, Thomas (celui qu'on appelle Didyme), s'adressant à ses condisciples: «Et nous aussi, dit-il, allons-y afin de périr avec lui!»
17 Then Jesus, when he came; found that he had already lain in the tomb four days.
Lorsque Jésus arriva, Lazare, depuis quatre jours, était enseveli dans le tombeau.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
Comme Béthanie n'était éloignée de Jérusalem que d'environ quinze stades,
19 and many of the Jews had come with the women who were about Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
beaucoup de Juifs s'étaient rendus auprès de Marthe et de Marie pour les consoler de la mort de leur frère.
20 Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met him: but Mary sat in the house.
Marthe, cependant, dès qu'elle eut appris que Jésus approchait, t alla au-devant de lui. Marie resta assise à la maison.
21 And Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
«Seigneur, dit Marthe à Jésus, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort;
22 But even now I know, that whatsoever things thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.
et, je sais, encore en ce moment, que tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te le donnera.»
23 Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again.
Jésus lui répondit: «Ton frère ressuscitera.» —
24 Martha saith to him, I know that he shall rise at the resurrection in the last day.
«Je le sais, lui dit Marthe, il ressuscitera à la résurrection, au dernier jour.»
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
Jésus lui dit: «Je suis, moi, la résurrection et la vie. Qui croit en moi, fût-il mort, vivra,
26 and every one who is alive, and believeth in me, shall never die to eternity. Believest thou this? (aiōn g165)
et quiconque vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela?» — (aiōn g165)
27 She saith to him, Yes, Lord I believe that thou art the Messiah, the Son of God, who cometh into the world.
«Oui, Seigneur, répondit-elle, je crois que tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, celui qui doit venir au monde.»
28 So when she had thus spoken, she went away, and called her sister Mary privately, saying, The Master is near at hand, and calleth for thee.
Après ces paroles, elle s'éloigna et alla appeler sa soeur. «Le maître est là et il t'appelle», lui dit-elle en secret.
29 As soon as she heard it, she rose hastily, and came to him.
A ces mots, Marie se lève à la hâte et se rend vers Jésus.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was on the spot where Martha had met him.
Celui-ci n'était pas encore entré dans le bourg; il était à l'endroit où Marthe l'avait rencontré.
31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, observing Mary, that she rose up hastily, and went out, followed her, saying, She is going to the tomb, to weep there.
Voyant Marie se lever si vite et partir, les Juifs qui étaient ave celle dans la maison et cherchaient à la consoler, la suivirent. Ils croyaient qu'elle allait au tombeau pour y pleurer.
32 When therefore Mary was come where Jesus was, beholding him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died!
Parvenue au lieu où était Jésus, Marie, en l'apercevant, se jeta à ses pieds: «Seigneur, lui dit-elle, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.»
33 When Jesus then saw her weeping, and all the Jews who came with her lamenting, he groaned in spirit, and was himself greatly agitated:
La voyant pleurer, et voyant pleurer les Juifs qui l'accompagnaient, Jésus frémit en lui-même et se troubla.
34 and he said, Where have ye laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.
«Où l'avez-vous déposé? demanda-t-il. On lui répondit: «Seigneur, viens et vois.»
35 Jesus wept.
Jésus pleura.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold, how he loved him!
«Voyez comme il l'aimait!» dirent alors les Juifs.
37 But some of them said, Could not this man, who openeth the eyes of the blind, have caused that this person should not have died?
Il y en avait cependant quelques-uns qui disaient: «Ne pouvait-il pas empêcher qu'il mourût, lui, qui a ouvert les yeux de l'aveugle?»
38 Then Jesus again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. It was an excavation, and a stone lay upon it.
Frémissant de nouveau en lui-même, Jésus s'approche du sépulcre. C'était une caverne, sur l'entrée de laquelle une pierre était placée.
39 Jesus saith, Remove the stone. The sister of the deceased, Martha, said to him, Lord, he is by this time putrid: for he hath been dead four days.
«Otez la pierre», dit Jésus. — «Seigneur, dit Marthe, la soeur du mort, il sent déjà mauvais! c'est le quatrième jour!»
40 Jesus saith unto her, Did I not tell thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?
Jésus lui répond: «Ne t'ai-je pas dit que si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu!», Donc, on enleva la pierre.
41 Then they removed the stone where the deceased was lying. And Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me!
Alors Jésus, tournant son regard vers le ciel, dit: «Père! je te rends grâces de ce que tu m'as écouté!
42 And I knew that thou always dost hear me: but for the sake of the multitude standing by I spake, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
Pour moi, je savais que tu m'écoutes toujours; mais je parle ainsi à cause de ce peuple qui m'environne, pour qu'il croie que c'est toi qui m'as envoyé.»
43 And when he had thus spoken, with a loud voice he cried, Lazarus, come forth!
Et quand il eut dit ces mots, il cria d'une voix forte: «Lazare! sors et viens!»
44 And the deceased came forth, his feet and his hands wrapped with the linen swathes; and his face bound round with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go!
Le mort sortit, les pieds et les mains liés par des bandelettes, et le visage enveloppé d'un suaire. «Déliez-le, dit Jésus, et laissez-le aller.»
45 Then many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what Jesus had done, believed on him.
A la vue de ce qu'il avait fait, plusieurs des Juifs qui étaient venus voir Marie, crurent en lui.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
Mais quelques autres s'en allèrent trouver les Pharisiens et leur racontèrent ce qu'avait fait Jésus.
47 The chief priests and Pharisees therefore called the sanhedrim together, and said, What are we about? for this man is doing many miracles.
Les chefs des prêtres et les Pharisiens convoquèrent alors une assemblée. «Que faire? disaient-ils, cet homme opère de nombreux miracles;
48 If we suffer him to go on thus, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation.
si nous le laissons continuer, tout le monde croira en lui; puis viendront les Romains qui en finiront et avec notre vit le et avec notre nation.»
49 Then one particular person of them, Caiaphas, being the high-priest of that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing,
L'un d'entre eux, Kaïphe qui, en cette année, était le grand-prêtre, leur dit: «Vous n'y entendez rien;
50 nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation be not destroyed.
vous ne réfléchissez pas qu'il vaut mieux pour vous qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple et que toute la nation ne périsse pas.»
51 And this he spake not from himself: but being the high-priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;
Il parlait de la sorte, non de lui-même, mais parce que, grand-prêtre cette année-là, il prophétisait que Jésus allait mourir pour la nation
52 and not for that nation only, but that he should collect into one body the children of God wherever dispersed.
et non seulement pour la nation, mais afin de rassembler dans l'unité les enfants de Dieu dispersés.
53 Then from that day they consulted together how they might kill him.
Donc, dès ce jour, ils arrêtèrent la résolution de mettre Jésus à mort.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but went thence into the country bordering on the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he abode with his disciples.
Aussi celui-ci ne se montrait-il plus en public parmi les Juifs. Il s'en alla même dans le pays voisin du désert, à une ville nommée Éphraïm; et il y séjourna avec les disciples.
55 Now the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, in order to purify themselves.
Cependant la Pâque des Juifs approchait et, dans la contrée, un grand nombre montaient, avant la fête, à Jérusalem, pour y procéder à des purifications.
56 Then they sought for Jesus, and said one to another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
Aussi cherchaient-ils Jésus et, se rencontrant au Temple, ils se demandaient les uns aux autres: «Pensez-vous qu'il s'abstiendra de venir à la fête?»
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any person knew where he was, they should declare it, that they might apprehend him.
Or les chefs des prêtres et les Pharisiens avaient donné cet ordre: «Que si quelqu'un savait où était Jésus, il le déclarât, afin qu'on le fit arrêter.»
