Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eate with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee,
Quand tu seras assis pour manger avec le prince, considère attentivement ce qui est servi devant toi;
2 And put the knife to thy throte, if thou be a man giuen to the appetite.
Mets un couteau à ta gorge, si cependant tu es maître de ton âme.
3 Be not desirous of his deintie meates: for it is a deceiuable meate.
Ne désire pas des aliments de celui chez qui est un pain de mensonge.
4 Trauaile not too much to be rich: but cease from thy wisdome.
Ne travaille pas à t’enrichir; mais à ta prudence mets des bornes.
5 Wilt thou cast thine eyes vpon it, which is nothing? for riches taketh her to her wings, as an eagle, and flyeth into the heauen.
Ne lève pas tes yeux vers des richesses que tu ne peux avoir; parce qu’elles se feront des ailes comme celles d’un aigle, et s’envoleront au ciel.
6 Eate thou not the bread of him that hath an euil eye, neither desire his deintie meates.
Ne mange pas avec un homme envieux, et ne désire pas de ses mets;
7 For as though he thought it in his heart, so will hee say vnto thee, Eate and drinke: but his heart is not with thee.
Parce que, semblable à un devin et à un augure, il juge de ce qu’il ignore. Mange et bois, te dira-t-il, et son cœur n’est pas avec toi.
8 Thou shalt vomit thy morsels that thou hast eaten, and thou shalt lose thy sweete wordes.
Les aliments que tu avais mangés, tu les rejetteras; et tu perdras tes sages discours.
9 Speake not in the eares of a foole: for hee will despise the wisdome of thy wordes.
Ne parle pas à l’oreille des insensés, parce qu’ils mépriseront la doctrine que tu leur auras enseignée par tes paroles.
10 Remooue not the ancient boundes, and enter not into the fieldes of the fatherlesse.
Ne touche pas aux bornes des petits; et n’entre pas dans le champ des orphelins;
11 For he that redeemeth them, is mightie: he will defend their cause against thee.
Car leur proche est puissant; et lui-même jugera contre toi leur cause.
12 Apply thine heart to instruction, and thine eares to the wordes of knowledge.
Que ton cœur s’avance vers la doctrine, et tes oreilles vers les paroles de la science.
13 Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.
Ne soustrais pas à l’enfant la discipline; car si tu le frappes de la verge, il ne mourra pas.
Tu le frapperas donc de la verge; et de l’enfer tu délivreras son âme. (Sheol h7585)
15 My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.
Mon fils, si ton esprit est sage, mon cœur se réjouira avec toi;
16 And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.
Et mes reins exulteront, lorsque tes lèvres parleront droiture.
17 Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.
Que ton cœur ne porte pas envie aux pécheurs; mais dans la crainte du Seigneur sois tout le jour;
18 For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
Parce que tu auras l’espérance à ton dernier moment, et que ton attente ne sera pas frustrée.
19 O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
Ecoute, mon fils, et sois sage; et dirige ton esprit dans la bonne voie.
20 Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
Ne te trouve pas dans les festins des buveurs, ni dans les orgies de ceux qui apportent des viandes pour manger ensemble.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.
Car ceux qui passent le temps à boire et qui payent leur écot, se ruineront, et l’assoupissement sera vêtu de haillons.
22 Obey thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother when she is olde.
Ecoute ton père qui t’a engendré; et ne méprise pas ta mère, lorsqu’elle aura vieilli.
23 Bye the trueth, but sell it not: likewise wisdome, and instruction, and vnderstanding.
Achète la vérité, et ne vends pas la sagesse, la doctrine et l’intelligence.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly reioyce, and hee that begetteth a wise childe, shall haue ioy of him.
Le père du juste exulte; celui qui a engendré le sage se réjouira en lui.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall reioyce.
Que ton père et ta mère se réjouissent; et qu’elle exulte, celle qui t’a enfanté.
26 My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.
Donne-moi ton cœur, mon fils; et que tes yeux gardent mes voies.
27 For a whore is as a deepe ditche, and a strange woman is as a narrowe pitte.
Car c’est une fosse profonde, qu’une prostituée; et un puits étroit, qu’une étrangère.
28 Also she lyeth in wait as for a praye, and she increaseth the transgressers among men.
Elle dresse des embûches sur la voie comme un voleur; et ceux qu’elle verra n’être pas sur leurs gardes, elle les tuera.
29 To whome is woe? to whome is sorowe? to whom is strife? to whom is murmuring? to whom are woundes without cause? and to whome is the rednesse of the eyes?
À qui malheur? au père de qui malheur? à qui les querelles? à qui les fosses? à qui les blessures sans motifs? à qui le trouble des yeux?
30 Euen to them that tarie long at the wine, to them that goe, and seeke mixt wine.
N’est-ce pas à ceux qui s’arrêtent à boire le vin, et qui prennent goût à vider des coupes pleines?
31 Looke not thou vpon the wine, when it is red, and when it sheweth his colour in the cup, or goeth downe pleasantly.
Ne regarde pas le vin, quand il jaunit, lorsque sa couleur brille dans le verre: il entre doucement;
32 In the ende thereof it will bite like a serpent, and hurt like a cockatrise.
Mais à la fin, il mordra comme une couleuvre: et comme le basilic, il répandra son venin.
33 Thine eyes shall looke vpon strange women, and thine heart shall speake lewde things.
Tes yeux verront les étrangères, et ton cœur dira des choses perverses.
34 And thou shalt bee as one that sleepeth in the middes of the sea, and as hee that sleepeth in the toppe of the maste.
Et tu seras comme un homme dormant au milieu de la mer, et comme un pilote assoupi, le gouvernail ayant été perdu;
35 They haue stricken mee, shalt thou say, but I was not sicke: they haue beaten mee, but I knew not, when I awoke: therefore will I seeke it yet still.
Et tu diras: Ils m’ont frappé, mais je n’en ai pas souffert; ils m’ont traîné, et moi je ne l’ai pas senti: quand me réveillerai-je, et trouverai-je encore du vin?
