Proverbs 22
1 A good name is to be chosen aboue great riches, and louing fauour is aboue siluer and aboue golde.
Een goede naam is meer waard dan een groot vermogen, Bemind te zijn is beter dan zilver en goud.
2 The rich and poore meete together: the Lord is the maker of them all.
Rijk en arm ontmoeten elkaar, Jahweh is hun aller Schepper.
3 A prudent man seeth the plague, and hideth himselfe: but the foolish goe on still, and are punished.
De wijze ziet onheil en trekt zich terug; De onnozelen lopen door, en moeten ervoor boeten.
4 The rewarde of humilitie, and the feare of God is riches, and glory, and life.
Het loon voor ootmoed en vreze voor Jahweh Is rijkdom, aanzien en leven.
5 Thornes and snares are in the way of the frowarde: but he that regardeth his soule, will depart farre from them.
Doornen en strikken liggen op de weg van den valsaard; Wie zijn leven liefheeft, blijft er ver vandaan.
6 Teache a childe in the trade of his way, and when he is olde, he shall not depart from it.
Oefen kinderen in de weg, die ze moeten gaan, Dan wijken ze ook in hun ouderdom er niet van af.
7 The rich ruleth the poore, and the borower is seruant to the man that lendeth.
Wie rijk is, heerst over de armen; Wie leent, wordt de slaaf van wie uitleent.
8 He that soweth iniquitie, shall reape affliction, and the rodde of his anger shall faile.
Wie onrecht zaait, zal onheil oogsten; De vrucht van zijn arbeid gaat te niet.
9 He that hath a good eye, he shalbe blessed: for he giueth of his bread vnto the poore.
Een vriendelijk mens wordt gezegend, Want hij deelt met den arme zijn brood.
10 Cast out the scorner, and strife shall go out: so contention and reproche shall cease.
Jaag den spotter weg, en het twisten houdt op, Er komt een eind aan vechten en schimpen.
11 Hee that loueth purenesse of heart for the grace of his lippes, the King shalbe his friend.
De zuivere van harte wordt door Jahweh bemind, De vleier is de vriend van den koning.
12 The eyes of the Lord preserue knowledge: but hee ouerthroweth the wordes of the transgressour.
De ogen van Jahweh houden vol kennis de wacht; Hij verijdelt de woorden van den zondaar.
13 The slouthfull man saith, A lyon is without, I shall be slaine in the streete.
De luiaard zegt: Buiten loopt een leeuw, Midden op straat word ik nog verscheurd!
14 The mouth of strage women is as a deepe pit: he with whom the Lord is angry, shall fall therein.
Een diepe kuil is de mond van vreemde vrouwen; Op wien Jahweh vertoornd is, die valt erin.
15 Foolishnesse is bounde in the heart of a childe: but the rodde of correction shall driue it away from him.
Al zit de dwaasheid in het hart van een kind geworteld, De tuchtroede haalt ze er uit!
16 Hee that oppresseth the poore to increase him selfe, and giueth vnto the riche, shall surely come to pouertie.
Wie een arme verdrukt, brengt hem voordeel; Wie aan een rijkaard iets geeft, veroorzaakt gebrek
17 Incline thine eare, and heare the wordes of the wise, and apply thine heart vnto my knowledge.
Woorden van wijzen Neig uw oor en luister naar mijn woorden; Zet uw aandacht erop, om ze te leren kennen.
18 For it shalbe pleasant, if thou keepe them in thy bellie, and if they be directed together in thy lippes.
Het is goed, als ge ze ter harte neemt, En ze allen bestendig op uw lippen hebt.
19 That thy confidence may be in the Lord, I haue shewed thee this day: thou therefore take heede.
Opdat ge in Jahweh uw vertrouwen moogt stellen, Maak ik ze heden bekend, ook aan u!
20 Haue not I written vnto thee three times in counsels and knowledge,
Een dertigtal heb ik er voor u opgeschreven: Ze bevatten goede raad en ervaring;
21 That I might shewe thee the assurance of the wordes of trueth to answere the wordes of trueth to them that sende to thee?
Ze leren u de waarheid en betrouwbare woorden, Zodat ge een goed antwoord kunt geven aan hen die u ondervragen
22 Robbe not the poore, because hee is poore, neither oppresse the afflicted in iudgement.
Buit een arme niet uit, omdat hij arm is, Trap in de poort niet op den kleinen man;
23 For the Lord will defende their cause, and spoyle the soule of those that spoyle them.
Want Jahweh zal het voor hen opnemen, En die hèn beroven, van het leven beroven.
24 Make no friendship with an angrie man, neither goe with the furious man,
Sluit geen vriendschap met een driftkop, Laat u niet in met een heethoofd;
25 Least thou learne his wayes, and receiue destruction to thy soule.
Anders raakt ge vertrouwd met hun wegen, En zet ge een valstrik voor uzelf.
26 Be not thou of them that touch the hand, nor among them that are suretie for debts.
Behoor niet tot hen, die handslag geven, En borg blijven voor schulden;
27 If thou hast nothing to paye, why causest thou that he should take thy bed from vnder thee?
Als ge niets hebt om te betalen, Haalt men het bed onder u weg.
28 Thou shalt not remooue the ancient bounds which thy fathers haue made.
Raak niet aan de eeuwenoude grenzen, Die uw voorvaderen hebben getrokken.
29 Thou seest that a diligent man in his businesse standeth before Kings, and standeth not before the base sort.
Ziet ge iemand die handig is met zijn werk, Hij komt bij koningen in dienst; Het gewone volk hoeft hij niet te dienen!
