Proverbs 20

1 Wine is a mocker and strong drinke is raging: and whosoeuer is deceiued thereby, is not wise.

दाखमधु ठट्ठा करनेवाला, तथा दाखमधु हल्ला मचानेवाला हो जाता है; और जो व्यक्ति इनके प्रभाव में है, वह निर्बुद्धि है.

2 The feare of the King is like the roaring of a lyon: hee that prouoketh him vnto anger, sinneth against his owne soule.

राजा का भय सिंह की दहाड़-समान होता है; जो कोई उसके कोप को उकसाता है, अंततः प्राणों से हाथ धो बैठता है.

3 It is a mans honour to cease from strife: but euery foole will be medling.

आदरणीय है वह व्यक्ति, जो कलह और विवादों से दूर रहता है, झगड़ालू, वस्तुतः मूर्ख ही होता है.

4 The slouthfull will not plowe, because of winter: therefore shall he beg in sommer, but haue nothing.

आलसी निर्धारित समय पर हल नहीं जोतता; और कटनी के समय पर उपज काटने जाता है, तो वहां कुछ भी नहीं रहेगा.

5 The counsell in the heart of man is like deepe waters: but a man that hath vnderstanding, will drawe it out.

मनुष्य के मन में निहित युक्तियां गहरे सागर समान होती हैं, ज्ञानवान ही उन्हें निकाल बाहर ला सकता है.

6 Many men wil boast, euery one of his owne goodnes: but who can finde a faithfull man?

अनेक अपने उत्कृष्ट प्रेम का दावा करते हुए खड़े हो जाएंगे, किंतु एक सच्चा व्यक्ति किसे प्राप्‍त होता है?

7 He that walketh in his integritie, is iust: and blessed shall his children be after him.

धर्मी जन निष्कलंक जीवन जीता है; उसके बाद आनेवाली संतानें धन्य हैं.

8 A King that sitteth in the throne of iudgement, chaseth away all euill with his eyes.

न्याय-सिंहासन पर विराजमान राजा मात्र अपनी दृष्टि ही से बुराई को भांप लेता है.

9 Who can say, I haue made mine heart cleane, I am cleane from my sinne?

कौन यह दावा कर सकता है, “मैंने अपने हृदय को पवित्र कर लिया है; मैं पाप से शुद्ध हो चुका हूं”?

10 Diuers weightes, and diuers measures, both these are euen abomination vnto the Lord.

याहवेह के समक्ष असमान तुला और असमान माप घृणास्पद हैं.

11 A childe also is knowen by his doings, whether his worke be pure and right.

एक किशोर के लिए भी यह संभव है, कि वह अपने चालचलन द्वारा अपनी विशेषता के लक्षण प्रकट कर दे, कि उसकी गतिविधि शुद्धता तथा पवित्रता की ओर है अथवा नहीं?

12 The Lord hath made both these, euen the eare to heare, and the eye to see.

वे कान, जो सुनने के लिए, तथा वे नेत्र, जो देखने के लिए निर्धारित किए गए हैं, याहवेह द्वारा निर्मित हैं.

13 Loue not sleepe least thou come vnto pouertie: open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

नींद का मोह तुम्हें गरीबी में डुबो देगा; अपने नेत्र खुले रखो कि तुम्हारे पास भोजन की भरपूरी रहे.

14 It is naught, it is naught, sayth the buyer: but when he is gone apart, he boasteth.

ग्राहक तो विक्रेता से यह अवश्य कहता है, “अच्छी नहीं है यह सामग्री!” किंतु वहां से लौटकर वह अन्यों के समक्ष अपनी उत्कृष्ट खरीद की बड़ाई करता है.

15 There is golde, and a multitude of precious stones: but the lips of knowledge are a precious iewel.

स्वर्ण और मूंगे की कोई कमी नहीं है, दुर्लभ रत्नों के समान दुर्लभ हैं ज्ञान के उद्गार.

16 Take his garment, that is suretie for a stranger, and a pledge of him for the stranger.

जो किसी अनजान के ऋण की ज़मानत देता है, वह अपने वस्त्र तक गंवा बैठता है; जब कोई अनजान व्यक्तियों की ज़मानत लेने लगे, तब प्रतिभूति सुरक्षा में उसका वस्त्र भी रख ले.

17 The bread of deceit is sweete to a man: but afterward his mouth shalbe filled with grauel.

छल से प्राप्‍त किया गया भोजन उस व्यक्ति को बड़ा स्वादिष्ट लगता है, किंतु अंत में वह पाता है कि उसका मुख कंकड़ों से भर गया है.

18 Establish the thoughtes by counsell: and by counsell make warre.

किसी भी योजना की सिद्धि का मर्म है सुसंगत परामर्श; तब युद्ध के पूर्व उपयुक्त निर्देश प्राप्‍त कर रखो.

19 He that goeth about as a slanderer, discouereth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

कानाफूसी आत्मविश्वास को धोखा देती है; तब ऐसे बकवादी की संगति से दूर रहना ही भला है.

20 He that curseth his father or his mother, his light shalbe put out in obscure darkenes.

जो अपने पिता और अपनी माता को शाप देता है, उसका दीपक घोर अंधकार की स्थिति में ही बुझ जाएगा.

21 An heritage is hastely gotten at the beginning, but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

प्रारंभ में सरलतापूर्वक और शीघ्रता से प्राप्‍त की हुई संपत्ति अंततः सुखदायक नहीं होती.

22 Say not thou, I wil recompense euill: but waite vpon the Lord, and he shall saue thee.

मत कहो, “मैं इस अन्याय का प्रतिशोध अवश्य लूंगा!” याहवेह के निर्धारित अवसर की प्रतीक्षा करो, वही तुम्हारा छुटकारा करेंगे.

23 Diuers weightes are an abomination vnto the Lord, and deceitful balances are not good.

असमान माप याहवेह के समक्ष घृणास्पद, तथा छलपूर्ण तुलामान कुटिलता है.

24 The steps of man are ruled by the Lord: how can a man then vnderstand his owne way?

जब मनुष्य का चलना याहवेह द्वारा ठहराया जाता है, तब यह कैसे संभव है कि हम अपनी गतिविधियों को स्वयं समझ सकें?

25 It is a destruction for a man to deuoure that which is sanctified, and after the vowes to inquire.

जल्दबाजी में कुछ प्रभु के लिए कुछ समर्पित करना एक जाल जैसा है, क्योंकि तत्पश्चात व्यक्ति मन्नत के बारे में विचार करने लगता है!

26 A wise King scattereth the wicked, and causeth the wheele to turne ouer them.

बुद्धिमान राजा दुष्टों को अलग करता जाता है; और फिर उन पर दांवने का पहिया चला देता है.

27 The light of the Lord is the breath of man, and searcheth all the bowels of the belly.

मनुष्य की आत्मा याहवेह द्वारा प्रज्वलित वह दीप है, जिसके प्रकाश में वह उसके मन की सब बातों का ध्यान कर लेते हैं.

28 Mercie and trueth preserue the King: for his throne shall be established with mercie.

स्वामीश्रद्धा तथा सच्चाई ही राजा को सुरक्षित रखती हैं; तथा बिना पक्षपात का न्याय उसके सिंहासन की स्थिरता होती है.

29 The beautie of yong men is their strength, and the glory of the aged is the gray head.

युवाओं की शोभा उनके शौर्य में है, और वरिष्ठ व्यक्ति की उसके सफेद बालों में.

30 The blewnes of the wound serueth to purge the euill, and the stripes within the bowels of the belly.

बुराई को छोड़ने के लिए अनिवार्य है वह प्रहार, जो घायल कर दे; कोड़ों की मार मन को स्वच्छ कर देती है.
