Numbers 35
1 And the Lord spake vnto Moses in the plaine of Moab by Iorden, toward Iericho, saying,
Le Seigneur dit encore ceci à Moïse dans les plaines de Moab, sur le Jourdain, contre Jéricho:
2 Commande ye children of Israel, that they giue vnto the Leuites of the inheritace of their possession, cities to dwell in: yee shall giue also vnto the Leuites the suburbes of the cities round about them.
Ordonne aux enfants d’Israël qu’ils donnent de leurs possessions aux Lévites,
3 So they shall haue the cities to dwell in, and their suburbes shall be for their cattell, and for their substance, and for all their beasts.
Des villes à habiter et leurs faubourgs d’alentour; afin qu’ils demeurent eux-mêmes dans les villes, et que les faubourgs soient pour les troupeaux et les bestiaux.
4 And the suburbes of the cities, which ye shall giue vnto the Leuites, from the wall of the citie outward, shalbe a thousand cubites round about.
Ces faubourgs en dehors des murs des villes, s’étendront tout autour dans l’espace de mille pas;
5 And yee shall measure without the citie of the Eastside, two thousand cubites: and of the Southside, two thousand cubites: and of the Westside, two thousand cubites: and of ye Northside, two thousand cubites: and the citie shalbe in ye middes. this shalbe the measure of the suburbes of their cities.
Contre l’orient, il y aura deux mille coudées; et contre le midi pareillement deux mille; vers la mer aussi, qui regarde l’occident, ce sera la même mesure, et la partie septentrionale sera bornée par une semblable limite; et les villes seront au milieu, et au-dehors les faubourgs.
6 And of the cities which yee shall giue vnto the Leuites, there shalbe sixe cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint, that he which killeth, may flee thither: and to them yee shall adde two and fourtie cities more.
Or, de ces villes mêmes que vous donnerez aux Lévites, six seront séparées, comme asiles pour les fugitifs, afin que celui qui aura versé le sang, s’y réfugie; et outre ces six, il y aura quarante-deux autres villes,
7 All the cities which yee shall giue to the Leuites, shalbe eight and fourtie cities: them shall ye giue with their suburbes.
C’est-à-dire, en tout, quarante-huit avec leurs faubourgs.
8 And concerning the cities which yee shall giue, of the possession of the children of Israel: of many ye shall take more, and of few ye shall take lesse: euery one shall giue of his cities vnto the Leuites, according to his inheritance, which hee inheriteth.
Quant à ces villes mêmes qui seront données sur les possessions des enfants d’Israël, on en prendra plus à ceux qui en auront plus, et moins à ceux qui en auront moins; chacun, selon la mesure de son héritage, donnera des villes aux Lévites.
9 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,
Le Seigneur dit à Moïse:
10 Speake vnto the children of Israel, and say vnto them, When ye be come ouer Iorden into the land of Canaan,
Parle aux enfants d’Israël, et tu leur diras: Quand vous aurez passé du Jourdain dans la terre de Chanaan,
11 Ye shall appoint you cities, to bee cities of refuge for you, that the slayer, which slayeth any person vnwares, may flee thither.
Décidez quelles villes doivent être des asiles pour les fugitifs, qui, sans le vouloir, auront versé le sang;
12 And these cities shalbe for you a refuge from the auenger, that he which killeth, die not, vntill he stand before the Congregation in iudgement.
Villes dans lesquelles, lorsque le fugitif y sera, le parent de celui qui a été tué ne pourra pas le tuer, jusqu’à ce qu’il se trouve en présence de la multitude, et que sa cause soit jugée.
13 And of the cities which ye shall giue, sixe cities shall ye haue for refuge.
Or, de ces villes, qui seront séparées pour être des asiles de fugitifs,
14 Ye shall appoint three on this side Iorden, and ye shall appoint three cities in the lande of Canaan which shalbe cities of refuge.
Trois seront au-delà du Jourdain, et trois dans la terre de Chanaan,
15 These six cities shalbe a refuge for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for him that dwelleth among you, that euery one which killeth any person vnwares, may flee thither.
Tant pour les enfants d’Israël, que pour les étrangers et les voyageurs, afin que s’y réfugie celui qui, sans le vouloir, aura versé le sang.
16 And if one smite another with an instrument of yron that hee die, hee is a murtherer, and the murtherer shall die the death.
Si quelqu’un frappe avec le fer, et que celui qui a été frappé meure, il sera coupable d’homicide, et il mourra lui-même.
17 Also if hee smite him by casting a stone, wherewith hee may be slaine, and he die, hee is a murtherer, and the murtherer shall die the death.
S’il jette une pierre, et que celui qui aura été frappé meure, il sera puni de la même manière.
18 Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may be slaine, if he die, he is a murtherer, and the murtherer shall die the death.
Si quelqu’un frappé avec du bois meurt, il sera vengé par le sang de celui qui l’aura frappé.
19 The reuenger of the blood himselfe shall slay the murtherer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.
Le parent de celui qui aura été tué, tuera l’homicide; aussitôt qu’il l’aura pris, il le tuera.
20 But if hee thrust him of hate, or hurle at him by laying of wait, that he die,
Si par haine quelqu’un pousse un homme, ou jette quelque chose contre lui de guet-apens,
21 Or smite him through enimitie with his hand, that he die, he that smote him shall die ye death: for hee is a murtherer: the reuenger of the blood shall slay the murtherer when he meeteth him.
Ou si, étant son ennemi, il le frappe de la main, et que celui-ci meure, celui qui aura frappé sera coupable d’homicide; le parent de celui qui aura été tué, aussitôt qu’il le trouvera, regorgera.
22 But if he pusshed him vnaduisedly, and not of hatred, or cast vpon him any thing, without laying of waite,
Que si c’est par hasard, et sans haine,
23 Or any stone (whereby he might be slaine) and sawe him not, or caused it to fall vpon him, and he die, and was not his enemie, neither sought him any harme,
Et sans inimitié, qu’il a fait quelqu’une de ces choses;
24 Then the Congregation shall iudge betweene the slayer and the auenger of blood according to these lawes.
Et que cela ait été prouvé, le peuple l’entendant, et que la question ait été agitée entre celui qui a frappé et le parent vengeur du sang,
25 And the Congregation shall deliuer the slayer out of the hande of the auenger of blood, and the Congregation shall restore him vnto the citie of his refuge, whither hee was fled: and hee shall abide there vnto the death of the hie Priest, which is anointed with the holy oyle.
Il sera délivré, comme innocent, de la main du vengeur, et sera ramené par sentence dans la ville, dans laquelle il s’était réfugié, et il demeurera là, jusqu’à ce que le grand prêtre qui a été oint de l’huile sainte, meure.
26 But if the slayer come without the borders of the citie of his refuge, whither he was fled,
Si c’est hors des limites des villes qui ont été assignées aux bannis, que l’homicide
27 And the reuenger of blood finde him without the borders of the citie of his refuge, and the reueger of blood slay ye murtherer, he shalbe giltles,
Est trouvé, et qu’il soit frappé à mort par celui qui est le vengeur du sang, celui qui l’aura tué ne sera pas coupable;
28 Because he should haue remained in the citie of his refuge, vntill the death of the hie Priest: and after the death of the hie Priest, the slayer shall returne vnto the land of his possession.
Car le fugitif devait résider dans la ville jusqu’à la mort du pontife. Mais après que celui-ci sera mort, l’homicide retournera dans sa terre.
29 So these thinges shall be a lawe of iudgement vnto you, throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
Ceci sera perpétuel et une loi dans toutes vos habitations.
30 Whosoeuer killeth any person, the Iudge shall slay the murtherer, through witnesses: but one witnesse shall not testifie against a person to cause him to die.
C’est d’après des témoins qu’un homicide sera puni: sur le témoignage d’un seul, nul ne sera condamné.
31 Moreouer ye shall take no recompense for the life of the murtherer, which is worthy to die: but he shalbe put to death.
Vous ne recevrez point d’argent de celui qui est coupable du sang; mais il mourra aussitôt lui-même.
32 Also ye shall take no recompense for him that is fled to the citie of his refuge, that he should come againe, and dwell in the lande, before the death of the hie Priest.
Les bannis et les fugitifs, avant la mort du pontife, ne pourront en aucune manière retourner dans leurs villes,
33 So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye shall dwell: for blood defileth the land: and the land cannot be clensed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.
Afin que vous ne souilliez point la terre de votre habitation, laquelle est profanée par le sang des innocents; et elle ne peut être purifiée que par le sang de celui qui a versé le sang d’un autre.
34 Defile not therefore the lande which yee shall inhabite, For I dwell in the middes thereof: for I the Lord dwel among the children of Israel.
Or, c’est ainsi que sera purifiée votre possession, moi demeurant avec vous: car c’est moi qui suis le Seigneur qui habite parmi les enfants d’Israël.
