Nehemiah 2
1 Nowe in the moneth Nisan in the twentieth yere of king Artahshashte, the wine stoode before him, and I tooke vp the wine, and gaue it vnto the King. nowe I was not before time sad in his presence.
C’Était au mois de Nissan, la vingtième année du roi Artahchasta: il y avait du vin devant lui; je pris ce vin et le présentai au roi. Ce n’était pas mon habitude d’être triste devant lui:
2 And the king said vnto me, Why is thy coutenance sad, seeing thou art not sicke? this is nothing, but sorow of heart. Then was I sore afrayd,
"Pourquoi, me dit le roi, as-tu si mauvaise mine? Tu n’es pourtant pas malade! Ce ne peut être qu’une peine de cœur." Je fus saisi d’une grande crainte,
3 And I said to the King, God saue the King for euer: why should not my countenance be sad, when the citie and house of the sepulchres of my fathers lieth waste, and the gates thereof are deuoured with fire?
et je répondis au roi: "Que le roi vive éternellement! Comment n’aurais-je pas l’air affligé, alors que la ville, lieu de sépulture de mes pères, est en ruines et que ses portes sont consumées par le feu?"
4 And the King said vnto me, For what thing doest thou require? Then I prayed to the God of heauen,
Alors le roi me dit: "Quel est l’objet de ta requête?" J’Adressai une prière au Dieu du ciel,
5 And sayde vnto the King, If it please the King, and if thy seruant haue found fauour in thy sight, I desire that thou wouldest send me to Iudah vnto the city of the sepulchres of my fathers, that I may buyld it.
et je dis au roi: "Si tel est le bon plaisir du roi et si ton serviteur possède ta bienveillance, envoie-moi en Judée, dans la ville où sont les tombeaux de mes pères, pour que je la rebâtisse."
6 And the King sayd vnto me, (the Queene also sitting by him) How long shall thy iourney be? and when wilt thou come againe? So it pleased the King, and he sent me, and I set him a time.
Le roi, qui avait la reine assise à ses côtés, me répondit: "Combien de temps durera ton voyage et quand seras-tu de retour?" Ainsi il plut au roi de m’accorder un congé, et je lui fixai un délai.
7 After I saide vnto the King, If it please the King, let them giue mee letters to the captaines beyond the Riuer, that they may conuay me ouer, till I come into Iudah,
Je dis encore au roi: "Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on me donne des lettres pour les préfets de l’autre côté du fleuve, afin qu’ils facilitent mon passage jusqu’à ce que j’arrive en Judée,
8 And letters vnto Asaph the keeper of the Kings parke, that hee may giue me timber to buylde the gates of the palace (which apperteined to the house) and for the walles of the citie, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the King gaue me according to the good hand of my God vpon me.
ainsi qu’une lettre pour Assaph, le conservateur de la forêt du roi, afin qu’il me fournisse du bois pour faire la charpente des portes du fort attenant au temple, des murs de la ville et de la maison que je vais occuper." Le roi me l’accorda, grâce à la protection divine qui me favorisait.
9 Then came I to the captaines beyonde the Riuer, and gaue them the Kings letters. And the King had sent captaines of the armie and horsemen with me.
J’Arrivai auprès des préfets de l’autre côté du fleuve et leur remis les lettres du roi; celui-ci m’avait, en outre, fait escorter par des chefs de troupe et des cavaliers.
10 But Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah a seruant an Ammonite heard it, and it grieued them sore, that there was come a man which sought the wealth of the children of Israel.
Quand Sanballat, le Horonite, Tobia, le serviteur ammonite, en furent informés, ils éprouvèrent un grand dépit de voir arriver quelqu’un pour s’occuper du bien-être des enfants d’Israël.
11 So I came to Ierusalem, and was there three dayes.
J’Entrai dans Jérusalem, et, après y être resté trois jours,
12 And I rose in the night, I, and a fewe men with me: for I told no man, what God had put in mine heart to do at Ierusalem, and there was not a beast with me, saue the beast whereon I rode.
je me mis en campagne pendant la nuit, accompagné de peu de personnes et sans avoir communiqué à qui que ce fût ce que mon Dieu avait inspiré à mon cœur de faire pour Jérusalem. Je n’avais d’autre bête de somme avec moi que celle qui me servait de monture.
13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, and came before the dragon well, and to the dung porte, and vewed the walles of Ierusalem, howe they were broken downe, and the portes thereof deuoured with the fire.
Je sortis pendant la nuit par la porte de la vallée et me dirigeai vers la fontaine du dragon et la porte des ordures, et j’inspectai les murs de Jérusalem, qui étaient en ruines, et ses portes, qui étaient consumées par le feu.
14 Then I went foorth vnto the gate of the fountaine, and to the Kings fishpoole, and there was no rowme for the beast that was vnder me to passe.
Puis, je passai à la porte de la source et à l’étang du roi; là, la place manquait pour que la bête que je montais pût passer.
15 Then went I vp in ye night by the brooke, and viewed the wall, and turned backe, and comming backe, I entred by the gate of the valley and returned.
Je m’avançai ensuite de nuit le long de la vallée, tout en examinant le mur, et, passant de nouveau par la porte de la vallée, je rentrai.
16 And the rulers knewe not whither I was gone, nor what I did, neither did I as yet tell it vnto the Iewes, nor to the Priestes, nor to the noble men, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that laboured in the worke.
Les chefs ne savaient où j’étais allé, ni ce que je me proposais de faire; car jusque-là, je n’avais rien révélé ni aux Judéens, ni aux prêtres, ni aux grands, ni aux chefs, ni aux autres travailleurs.
17 Afterward I said vnto them, Ye see the miserie that we are in, how Ierusalem lyeth waste, and the gates thereof are burnt with fire: come and let vs buylde the wall of Ierusalem, that we be no more a reproche.
Mais alors je leur dis: "Vous voyez la misère où nous sommes, comme Jérusalem est dévastée et ses portes consumées par le feu. Allons, rebâtissons les murs de Jérusalem pour que nous cessions d’être plus longtemps un objet d’opprobre."
18 Then I tolde them of the hande of my God, (which was good ouer me) and also of the Kings wordes that he had spoken vnto me. And they sayd, Let vs rise, and buyld. So they strengthened their hand to good.
Je leur fis connaître combien la protection de mon Dieu m’avait favorisé et quelles paroles m’avait adressées le roi, ils dirent aussitôt: "Nous allons nous mettre à l’œuvre et bâtir!" Ainsi ils prirent courage pour la bonne cause.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the seruant an Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian heard it, they mocked vs and despised vs, and said, What a thing is this that ye doe? Will ye rebell against the King?
Quand Sanballat, le Horonite, Tobia, le serviteur ammonite, et Ghéchem, l’Arabe, apprirent la chose, ils nous raillèrent et nous traitèrent avec dédain, disant: "Que signifie cette œuvre que vous entreprenez? Allez-vous vous révolter contre le roi?"
20 Then answered I them, and sayd to them, The God of heauen, he will prosper vs, and we his seruants will rise vp and buylde: but as for you, ye haue no portion nor right, nor memoriall in Ierusalem.
Mais je leur répliquai et leur dis: "Le Dieu du ciel nous donnera le succès; quant à nous; ses serviteurs, nous nous mettrons à l’œuvre et bâtirons; pour vous, vous n’avez aucune part, aucun droit, aucun souvenir dans Jérusalem."
