Judges 9
1 Then Abimelech the sonne of Ierubbaal went to Shechem vnto his mothers brethren, and communed with them, and with all the familie, and house of his mothers father, saying,
Es begab sich aber Jerubbaals Sohn Abimelech nach Sichem zu den Brüdern seiner Mutter und redete sie und das ganze Geschlecht der Familie seiner Mutter also an:
2 Say, I pray you, in the audience of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sonnes of Ierubbaal, which are seuentie persons, reigne ouer you, either that one reigne ouer you? Remember also, that I am your bone, and your flesh.
Fragt doch alle Bürger von Sichem eindringlich: Was frommt euch mehr: wenn siebzig Männer, sämtliche Söhne Jerubbaals, über euch herrschen, oder wenn ein Mann über euch herrscht? Dazu bedenkt, daß ich von eurem Fleisch und Bein bin!
3 Then his mothers brethren spake of him in the audience of all the men of Shechem, all these wordes: and their hearts were moued to follow Abimelech: for sayd they, He is our brother.
Da redeten die Brüder seiner Mutter allen Bürgern von Sichem seinetwegen ganz diesen Worten gemäß eindringlich zu, so daß sich ihr Sinn Abimelech zuneigte, weil sie dachten: er ist unser Stammesgenosse!
4 And they gaue him seuentie pieces of siluer out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vayne and light fellowes which followed him.
Daher gaben sie ihm siebzig Silbersekel aus dem Tempel des Bundesbaal; damit dingte sich Abimelech nichtsnutzige, leichtfertige Menschen und wurde ihr Anführer.
5 And he went vnto his fathers house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren, the sonnes of Ierubbaal, about seuentie persons vpon one stone: yet Iotham the yongest sonne of Ierubbaal was left: for he hid himselfe.
Darauf begab er sich zum Palaste seines Vaters nach Ophra und ermordete seine Brüder, die Söhne Jerubbaals, siebzig Mann, auf einem Steine; nur Jerubbaals jüngster Sohn Jotham blieb übrig, da er sich versteckt hatte.
6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together with all the house of Millo, and came and made Abimelech King in the playne, where the stone was erected in Shechem.
Darauf versammelten sich alle Bürger von Sichem samt allen Insassen des Millo, gingen hin und erwählten Abimelech zum Könige bei der Denkmalseiche, die bei Sichem steht.
7 And when they told it to Iotham, he went and stoode in the top of mount Gerizim, and lift vp his voyce, and cryed, and sayd vnto them, Hearken vnto mee, you men of Shechem, that God may hearken vnto you.
Als man das Jotham hinterbrachte, ging er hin, stellte sich auf den Gipfel des Berges Gerisim und rief ihnen mit hocherhobener Stimme zu:
8 The trees went foorth to anoynt a King ouer them, and sayde vnto the oliue tree, Reigne thou ouer vs.
Hört mich an, ihr Bürger von Sichem, damit Gott auch euch anhöre! Einst gingen die Bäume hin, einen König über sich zu salben; und sie sprachen zum Ölbaum: Bitte, sei König über uns!
9 But the oliue tree said vnto them, Should I leaue my fatnes, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to aduance me aboue ye trees?
Aber der Ölbaum erwiderte ihnen: Soll ich etwa meine Fettigkeit lassen, um deretwillen mich Götter und Menschen preisen, und hingehen, um über den Bäumen zu schweben?
10 Then the trees sayde to the fig tree, Come thou, and be King ouer vs.
Da sprachen die Bäume zum Feigenbaum: Wohlan, sei du König über uns!
11 But the fig tree answered them, Should I forsake my sweetenesse, and my good fruite, and goe to aduance me aboue the trees?
Aber der Feigenbaum erwiderte ihnen: Soll ich etwa meine Süßigkeit und meine köstliche Frucht lassen und hingehen, um über den Bäumen zu schweben?
12 Then sayd the trees vnto the Vine, Come thou, and be king ouer vs.
Da sprachen die Bäume zum Weinstock: Wohlan, sei du König über uns!
13 But the Vine sayde vnto them, Should I leaue my wine, whereby I cheare God and man, and goe to aduance me aboue the trees?
Aber der Weinstock erwiderte ihnen: Soll ich etwa meinen Most lassen, der Götter und Menschen fröhlich macht, und hingehen, um über den Bäumen zu schweben?
14 Then said all the trees vnto the bramble, Come thou, and reigne ouer vs.
Da sprachen die Bäume alle zum Stechdorn: Wohlan, so sei du König über uns!
15 And the bramble said vnto the trees, If ye will in deede anoynt me King ouer you, come, and put your trust vnder my shadowe: and if not, the fire shall come out of the bramble, and consume the Cedars of Lebanon.
Der Stechdorn aber erwiderte den Bäumen: Wenn ihr mich im Ernste zum König über euch salben wollt, so kommt und bergt euch in meinem Schatten! Wo nicht, wird Feuer vom Stechdorn ausgehen und die Cedern des Libanon verzehren!
16 Now therefore, if ye doe truely and vncorruptly to make Abimelech King, and if ye haue delt well with Ierubbaal and with his house, and haue done vnto him according to the deseruing of his handes,
Nun denn, wenn ihr ehrlich und redlich gehandelt habt, indem ihr Abimelech zum Könige machtet, und schön gehandelt habt an Jerubbaal und seiner Familie und ihm vergolten habt, was seine Hand für euch that,
17 (For my father fought for you, and aduentured his life, and deliuered you out of the handes of Midian.
- ihr, für die mein Vater gekämpft und sein Leben gewagt hat und die er aus der Gewalt der Midianiter errettete,
18 And yee are risen vp against my fathers house this day, and haue slayne his children, about seuentie persons vpon one stone, and haue made Abimelech the sonne of his mayde seruant, King ouer the men of Shechem, because hee is your brother)
während ihr euch heute gegen meines Vaters Familie erhoben, seine Söhne, siebzig Mann, auf einem Steine ermordet und Abimelech, den Sohn seiner Sklavin, zum Könige über die Bürger von Sichem erwählt habt, weil er euer Stammesgenosse ist:
19 If ye then haue delt truely and purely with Ierubbaal, and with his house this day, then reioyce with you.
- wenn ihr also heute ehrlich und redlich an Jerubbaal und seiner Familie gehandelt habt, so freut euch Abimelechs, und er möge sich eurer auch erfreuen!
20 But if not, let a fire come out from Abimelech, and consume the men of Shechem and the house of Millo: also let a fire come foorth from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and consume Abimelech.
Wenn aber nicht, so gehe Feuer aus von Abimelech und verzehre die Bürger von Sichem und die Insassen des Millo, und gehe Feuer aus von den Bürgern Sichems und den Insassen des Millo und verzehre Abimelech!
21 And Iotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there for feare of Abimelech his brother.
Darauf entwich Jotham und gelangte auf seiner Flucht nach Beer; dort ließ er sich nieder, in Sicherheit vor seinem Bruder Abimelech.
22 So Abimelech reigned three yeere ouer Israel.
Als nun Abimelech drei Jahre über Israel geherrscht hatte,
23 But God sent an euil spirit betweene Abimelech, and the men of Shechem: and the men of Shechem brake their promise to Abimelech,
da ließ Gott einen Geist der Zwietracht zwischen Abimelech und den Bürgern von Sichem aufkommen, so daß die Bürger von Sichem von Abimelech abtrünnig wurden,
24 That the crueltie toward the seuentie sonnes of Ierubbaal and their blood might come and be laide vpon Abimelech their brother, which had slayne them, and vpon the men of Shechem, which had ayded him to kill his brethren.
damit der an den siebzig Söhnen Jerubbaals begangene Frevel sich räche, und damit er ihr Blut auf ihren Bruder Abimelech, der sie ermordet hatte, und auf die Bürger von Sichem, die ihm bei der Ermordung seiner Brüder geholfen hatten, kommen ließe.
25 So the men of Shechem set men in wayte for him in the toppes of the mountaines: who robbed all that passed that way by them: and it was tolde Abimelech.
So stifteten denn die Bürger von Sichem auf den Höhen der Berge Wegelagerer gegen ihn auf, die jeden, der an der Landstraße an ihnen vorüberzog, beraubten. Das wurde Abimelech hinterbracht.
26 Then Gaal the sonne of Ebed came with his brethren, and they went to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
Es kam aber Gaal, der Sohn Jobels, mit seinen Stammesgenossen; die zogen in Sichem ein, und die Bürger von Sichem gewannen Vertrauen zu ihm.
27 Therefore they went out into the field, and gathered in their grapes and troade them, and made merie, and went into the house of their gods, and did eate and drinke, and cursed Abimelech.
Sie begaben sich hinaus aufs Feld, hielten die Weinlese, kelterten und veranstalteten ein Dankfest, gingen in den Tempel ihres Gottes, aßen und tranken und fluchten auf Abimelech.
28 Then Gaal the sonne of Ebed sayde, Who is Abimelech? and who is Shechem, that wee should serue him? Is he not the sonne of Ierubbaal? and Zebul is his officer? Serue rather the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serue him?
Da rief Gaal, der Sohn Jobels: Wer ist Abimelech und wer der Sohn Jerubbaals, daß wir ihm unterthan sein sollten? Ist er nicht ein Sichemit und Sebul sein Vogt? So mag er ihm denn samt den Leuten Hemors, des Stammvaters der Sichemiten, unterthan sein. Aber warum sollen wir ihm unterthan sein?
29 Now would God this people were vnder mine hand: then would I put away Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
Hätte ich doch über dieses Volk zu befehlen, so wollte ich Abimelech verjagen und zu Abimelech sprechen: Vermehre dein Heer und rücke aus!
30 And when Zebul the ruler of the citie heard the wordes of Gaal the sonne of Ebed, his wrath was kindled.
Als aber Sebul, der Befehlshaber über die Stadt, von den Reden Gaals, des Sohnes Jobels hörte, geriet er in Zorn,
31 Therefore he sent messengers vnto Abimelech priuily, saying, Beholde, Gaal the sonne of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem, and beholde, they fortifie the citie against thee.
sandte hinterlistigerweise Boten an Abimelech und ließ ihm sagen: Nun ist Gaal, der Sohn Jobels, mit seinen Stammesgenossen nach Sichem gekommen, und nun wiegeln sie die Stadt gegen dich auf!
32 Now therefore arise by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lye in wayte in the fielde.
So mache dich denn mitsamt dem Kriegsvolke, das du bei dir hast, des Nachts auf und lege dich draußen im Freien in den Hinterhalt;
33 And rise early in the morning as soone as the sunne is vp, and assault the citie: and when he and the people that is with him, shall come out against thee, doe to him what thou canst.
früh morgens aber, sobald die Sonne aufgeht, brich auf und überfalle die Stadt: wenn er dann mit den Leuten, die er bei sich hat, gegen dich ausrückt, so verfahre mit ihm, wie es die Gelegenheit giebt!
34 So Abimelech rose vp, and all the people that were with him by night: and they lay in wayte against Shechem in foure bandes.
Da machte sich Abimelech mit dem gesamten Kriegsvolke, das er bei sich hatte, des Nachts auf, und sie legten sich in vier Abteilungen gegen Sichem in den Hinterhalt.
35 Then Gaal the sonne of Ebed went out and stood in the entring of the gate of the citie: and Abimelech rose vp, and the folke that were with him, from lying in waite.
Als nun Gaal, der Sohn Jobels, ausrückte und vor das Stadtthor hinaustrat, brach Abimelech mit den Leuten, die er bei sich hatte, aus dem Hinterhalt hervor.
36 And when Gaal sawe the people, he said to Zebul, Beholde, there come people downe from the tops of the mountaines: and Zebul said vnto him, The shadowe of the mountaines seeme men vnto thee.
Gaal sah das Kriegsvolk und sprach zu Sebul: Da kommt ja Kriegsvolk von den Höhen der Berge herab! Sebul erwiderte ihm: Du siehst den Schatten der Berge für Menschen an!
37 And Gaal spake againe, and said, See, there come folke downe by the middle of the land, and another bande commeth by the way of the plaine of Meonenim.
Gaal aber hob noch einmal an und sprach: Fürwahr, Krieger steigen vom Nabel des Landes herab, und eine Abteilung kommt in der Richtung von der Zauberer-Eiche her!
38 Then sayd Zebul vnto him, Where is now thy mouth, that said, Who is Abimelech, that we should serue him? Is not this the people that thou hast despised? Go out now, I pray thee, and fight with them.
Nun rief Sebul ihm zu: Wo ist denn nun das große Maul, mit dem du sprachst: Wer ist Abimelech, daß wir ihm unterthan sein sollten? Da ist ja nun das Kriegsvolk, das du verachtet hast. So rücke doch jetzt aus und kämpfe mit ihm!
39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
Da rückte Gaal an der Spitze der Bürger von Sichem aus und lieferte Abimelech eine Schlacht.
40 But Abimelech pursued him, and he fledde before him, and many were ouerthrowen and wounded, euen vnto the entring of the gate.
Abimelech aber jagte ihn vor sich her in die Flucht, und eine Menge Erschlagener fiel bis dicht vor das Stadtthor.
41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren that they should not dwell in Shechem.
Dann verweilte Abimelech in Aruma, während Sebul Gaal und seine Stammesgenossen verjagte, so daß für sie in Sichem kein Bleiben mehr war.
42 And on the morowe, the people went out into the fielde: which was tolde Abimelech.
Am andern Morgen aber ging das Volk ins Freie hinaus. Das hinterbrachte man Abimelech.
43 And he tooke the people, and deuided them into three bandes, and layde wayte in the fieldes, and looked, and beholde, the people were come out of the citie, and he rose vp against them, and smote them.
Da nahm er das Kriegsvolk, teilte es in drei Abteilungen und legte sich draußen im Freien in den Hinterhalt, und sobald er sah, wie das Volk aus der Stadt kam, rückte er gegen sie an und schlug sie nieder.
44 And Abimelech, and the bandes that were with him, russhed forwarde, and stoode in the entring of the gate of the citie: and the two other bandes ran vpon all the people that were in the fielde and slewe them.
Abimelech selbst aber und die Abteilung, die er bei sich hatte, brachen los und nahmen Stellung vor dem Stadtthore, während die beiden anderen Abteilungen über alle die herfielen, die sich draußen im Freien befanden, und sie niederschlugen.
45 And when Abimelech had fought against the citie all that day, he tooke the citie, and slewe the people that was therein, and destroyed the citie and sowed salt in it.
Sodann bestürmte Abimelech die Stadt jenen ganzen Tag hindurch und eroberte sie; die Leute darin hieb er nieder, die Stadt selbst aber zerstörte er und streute Salz darauf.
46 And when all the men of the towre of Shechem heard it, they entred into an holde of the house of the god Berith.
Als nun alle Insassen der Burg von Sichem dies vernahmen, begaben sie sich in den Kellerraum des Tempels des Bundesgottes.
47 And it was tolde Abimelech, that all the men of the towre of Shechem were gathered together.
Als nun dem Abimelech hinterbracht wurde: Alle Insassen der Burg von Sichem sind dort beisammen!
48 And Abimelech gate him vp to mounte Zalmon, hee and all the people that were with him: and Abimelech tooke axes with him, and cut downe boughes of trees, and tooke them, and bare them on his shoulder, and sayde vnto the folke that were with him, What ye haue seene me doe, make haste, and doe like me.
da stieg Abimelech mit dem gesamten Kriegsvolke, das er bei sich hatte, auf den Berg Salmon. Hier ergriff Abimelech ein Beil, hieb einen Busch ab, hob ihn auf und legte ihn auf seine Schulter. Dann gebot er den Kriegern, die ihn begleiteten: Was ihr mich thun saht, thut mir schleunigst nach!
49 Then all the people also cut downe euery man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the holde, and set the holde on fire with them: so all the men of the towre of Shechem dyed also, about a thousand men and women.
Da hieben auch sämtliche Krieger Mann für Mann einen Busch ab, schritten dann hinter Abimelech her, warfen ihn über den Kellerraum und steckten ihnen so den Kellerraum von oben her in Brand, so daß nun auch sämtliche Bewohner der Burg von Sichem ums Leben kamen - bei 1000 Männer und Weiber.
50 Then went Abimelech to Tebez, and besieged Tebez, and tooke it.
Darauf zog Abimelech gegen Thebez, belagerte Thebez und eroberte es.
51 But there was a strong towre within the citie, and thither fledde all the men and women, and all the chiefe of the citie, and shut it to them, and went vp to the toppe of the towre.
Nun befand sich in der Mitte der Stadt ein fester Turm; dorthin flüchteten sich alle Männer und Weiber und sämtliche Bürger der Stadt. Sie verrammelten hinter sich den Eingang und stiegen hinauf auf das Dach des Turms.
52 And Abimelech came vnto the towre and fought against it, and went hard vnto the doore of the towre to set it on fire.
Abimelech aber rückte vor den Turm und bestürmte ihn. Als er nun an das Thor des Turms herantrat, um es in Brand zu stecken,
53 But a certaine woman cast a piece of a milstone vpon Abimelechs head, and brake his braine pan.
schleuderte ein Weib Abimelech einen oberen Mühlstein aufs Haupt und zerschmetterte ihm den Schädel.
54 Then Abimelech called hastily his page that bare his harneis, and sayde vnto him, Drawe thy sworde and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slewe him. And his page thrust him thorowe, and he dyed.
Da rief er schleunigst den Diener, der ihm die Waffen trug, herbei und befahl ihm: Zücke dein Schwert und gieb mir vollends den Tod, damit es nicht von mir heiße: Ein Weib hat ihn getötet! Da durchbohrte ihn sein Diener, und er starb.
55 And when the men of Israel sawe that Abimelech was dead, they departed euery man vnto his owne place.
Als nun die Israeliten wahrnahmen, daß Abimelech tot war, gingen sie ein jeder an seinen Ort.
56 Thus God rendred the wickednes of Abimelech, which he did vnto his father, in slaying his seuentie brethren.
So vergalt Gott die Frevelthat Abimelechs, die er an seinem Vater verübt hatte, indem er seine siebzig Brüder mordete,
57 Also all the wickednes of the men of Shechem did God bring vpon their heads. So vpon them came the curse of Iotham the sonne of Ierubbaal.
und ebenso ließ Gott alle Frevelthaten der Sichemiten auf ihr Haupt zurückfallen. So ging der Fluch Jothams, des Sohnes Jerubbaals, an ihnen in Erfüllung.
