Job 31
1 I made a couenant with mine eyes: why then should I thinke on a mayde?
J’Avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux: comment aurais-je porté mes regards sur une jeune fille?
2 For what portion should I haue of God from aboue? and what inheritance of the Almightie from on hie?
Quel lot eussé-je attendu de Dieu là-haut, quel sort du Tout-Puissant dans les régions suprêmes?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked and strange punishment to the workers of iniquitie?
Le malheur n’est-il pas réservé au malfaiteur, l’infortune aux artisans d’iniquités?
4 Doeth not he beholde my wayes and tell all my steps?
N’Observe-t-il pas mes voies? Ne compte-t-il point mes pas?
5 If I haue walked in vanitie, or if my foote hath made haste to deceite,
Est-ce que je me comportais avec fausseté, mes pieds couraient-ils au mal?
6 Let God weigh me in the iust balance, and he shall know mine vprightnes.
Qu’il me pèse donc dans de justes balances, et Dieu reconnaîtra mon intégrité.
7 If my steppe hath turned out of the way, or mine heart hath walked after mine eye, or if any blot hath cleaued to mine handes,
Si mes pas ont dévié du bon chemin, si mon cœur s’est laissé entraîner par mes yeux, si quelque taché souille mes mains,
8 Let me sowe, and let another eate: yea, let my plantes be rooted out.
eh bien! Qu’un autre mange ce que je sème, que mes rejetons soient déracinés!
9 If mine heart hath bene deceiued by a woman, or if I haue layde wayte at the doore of my neighbour,
Si mon cœur a été séduit par une femme, si j’ai fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain,
10 Let my wife grinde vnto another man, and let other men bow downe vpon her:
que ma propre femme tourne la meule pour un autre! Que des étrangers aient commerce avec elle!
11 For this is a wickednes, and iniquitie to bee condemned:
Car t’eût été une infamie, un crime puni par les juges,
12 Yea, this is a fire that shall deuoure to destruction, and which shall roote out al mine increase,
un feu dévorant jusqu’à la perdition, ruinant jusqu’à la racine toute ma récolte.
13 If I did contemne the iudgement of my seruant, and of my mayde, when they did contend with me,
Ai-je fait fi du droit de mon esclave et de ma servante, dans leurs contestations avec moi?
14 What then shall I do when God standeth vp? and when he shall visit me, what shall I answere?
Et qu’aurais-je fait si Dieu fût intervenu, qu’aurais-je répondu s’il m’eût demandé des comptes?
15 He that hath made me in the wombe, hath he not made him? hath not he alone facioned vs in the wombe?
Celui qui m’a formé dans les entrailles maternelles ne l’a-t-il pas formé aussi? N’Est-ce pas le même auteur qui nous a organisés dans la matrice?
16 If I restrained the poore of their desire, or haue caused the eyes of the widow to faile,
Ai-je refusé la demande des pauvres, fait languir les yeux de la veuve?
17 Or haue eaten my morsels alone, and the fatherles hath not eaten thereof,
Ai-je mangé, moi seul, mon pain, sans que l’orphelin en eût sa part?
18 (For from my youth hee hath growen vp with me as with a father, and from my mothers wombe I haue bene a guide vnto her)
Au contraire, dès ma jeunesse, il a grandi avec moi comme avec un père; dès le sein de ma mère, je fus le guide de la veuve.
19 If I haue seene any perish for want of clothing, or any poore without couering,
Ai-je jamais vu un déshérité privé de vêtements, un indigent n’ayant pas de quoi se couvrir,
20 If his loynes haue not blessed me, because he was warmed with the fleece of my sheepe,
sans que ses reins eussent occasion de me bénir, sans qu’il fût réchauffé parla toison de mes brebis?
21 If I haue lift vp mine hande against the fatherlesse, when I saw that I might helpe him in the gate,
Ai-je brandi la main contre l’orphelin, en me voyant des appuis à la Porte?
22 Let mine arme fal from my shoulder, and mine arme be broken from the bone.
Plutôt mon épaule aurait été arrachée à l’omoplate, et mon bras se fût détaché de l’humérus.
23 For Gods punishment was fearefull vnto me, and I could not be deliuered from his highnes.
Car je redoute le châtiment infligé par Dieu, je ne saurais résister à sa grandeur.
24 If I made gold mine hope, or haue sayd to the wedge of golde, Thou art my confidence,
Ai-je mis ma confiance dans l’or, ai-je dit au métal fin: "Tu es mon espoir?"
25 If I reioyced because my substance was great, or because mine hand had gotten much,
Me suis-je réjoui de posséder de grandes richesses, d’avoir mis la main sur d’immenses trésors?
26 If I did behold the sunne, when it shined, or the moone, walking in her brightnes,
Est-ce qu’en voyant briller le soleil, la lune cheminer avec majesté,
27 If mine heart did flatter me in secrete, or if my mouth did kisse mine hand,
mon cœur a été secrètement séduit, et ai-je présenté ma main aux baisers de ma bouche?
28 (This also had bene an iniquitie to be condemned: for I had denied the God aboue)
Cela aussi eût été un crime capital, car j’eusse renié le Dieu fort d’en haut.
29 If I reioyced at his destruction that hated me, or was mooued to ioye when euill came vpon him,
Ai-je triomphé de la ruine de mes ennemis, exulté de joie lorsque le malheur l’atteignait?
30 Neither haue I suffred my mouth to sinne, by wishing a curse vnto his soule.
Jamais je n’ai induit mon palais en faute, en demandant sa mort par des imprécations.
31 Did not the men of my Tabernacle say, Who shall giue vs of his flesh? we can not bee satisfied.
Est-ce que les hôtes de ma maison n’ont pas dit: "Ah! Est-il quelqu’un qui ne soit nourri à satiété de ses aliments?"
32 The stranger did not lodge in the streete, but I opened my doores vnto him, that went by the way.
Jamais l’étranger n’a passe la nuit dans la rue, j’ouvrais ma porte au voyageur.
33 If I haue hid my sinne, as Adam, concealing mine iniquitie in my bosome,
Ai-je dissimulé mes fautes comme les gens vulgaires, renfermé mes méfaits dans le secret de ma conscience?
34 Though I could haue made afraid a great multitude, yet the most contemptible of the families did feare me: so I kept silence, and went not out of the doore.
Ai-je eu peur de la grande foule, redouté le mépris des familles au point de rester coi, sans franchir le seuil de ma porte?
35 Oh that I had some to heare me! beholde my signe that the Almightie will witnesse for me: though mine aduersary should write a booke against me,
Ah! Que n’ai-je quelqu’un qui m’écoute! Voici ma signature: que le Tout-Puissant me réponde! Que mon adversaire rédige son mémoire!
36 Woulde not I take it vpon my shoulder, and binde it as a crowne vnto me?
Je le porterais sur mon épaule, je m’en parerais comme d’une couronne.
37 I will tell him the nomber of my goings, and goe vnto him as to a prince.
Je lui détaillerais le nombre de mes pas, je l’aborderais comme un prince.
38 If my lande cry against me, or the furrowes thereof complayne together,
Est-ce que mes terres crient vengeance contre moi, et leurs sillons se répandent-ils ensemble en larmes?
39 If I haue eaten the fruites thereof without siluer: or if I haue grieued the soules of the masters thereof,
Est-ce que j’en ai dévoré le produit, sans le payer de mon argent? Ai-je arraché des plaintes aux légitimes propriétaires?
40 Let thistles growe in steade of wheate, and cockle in the stead of Barley. The wordes of Iob are ended.
Si oui, que les ronces y poussent au lieu de froment, et au lieu d’orge l’ivraie! Ici se terminent les paroles de Job.
