Jeremiah 40

1 The worde which came to Ieremiah from the Lord after that Nebuzar-adan the chiefe stewarde had let him goe from Ramath, when hee had taken him being bound in chaines among all that were caried away captiue of Ierusalem and Iudah, which were caried away captiue vnto Babel.

La parola che fu rivolta dall’Eterno a Geremia, dopo che Nebuzaradan, capo delle guardie, l’ebbe rimandato da Rama. Quando questi lo fece prendere, Geremia era incatenato in mezzo a tutti quelli di Gerusalemme e di Giuda, che dovevano esser menati in cattività a Babilonia.

2 And the chiefe stewarde tooke Ieremiah, and said vnto him, The Lord thy God hath pronounced this plague vpon this place.

Il capo delle guardie prese dunque Geremia, e gli disse: “L’Eterno, il tuo Dio, aveva pronunziato questo male contro questo luogo;

3 Nowe the Lord hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye haue sinned against the Lord, and haue not obeyed his voyce, therefore this thing is come vpon you.

e l’Eterno l’ha fatto venire e ha fatto come aveva detto, perché voi avete peccato contro l’Eterno, e non avete dato ascolto alla sua voce; perciò questo v’è avvenuto.

4 And nowe beholde, I loose thee this day from the chaines which were on thine handes, if it please thee to come with me into Babel, come, and I will looke well vnto thee: but if it please thee not to come with mee into Babel, tarie still: beholde, all the lande is before thee: whither it seemeth good, and conuenient for thee to goe, thither goe.

Ora ecco, io ti sciolgo oggi dalle catene che hai alle mani; se ti piace di venire con me a Babilonia, vieni; e io avrò cura di te; ma se non t’aggrada di venir con me a Babilonia, rimantene; ecco, tutto il paese ti sta dinanzi; va’ dove ti piacerà e ti converrà d’andare”.

5 For yet he was not returned: therefore he said, Returne to Gedaliah the sonne of Ahikam, the sonne of Shaphan, whom the King of Babel hath made gouernour ouer all the cities of Iudah, and dwell with him among the people, or goe wheresoeuer it pleaseth thee to goe. So the chiefe stewarde gaue him vitailes and a rewarde, and let him goe.

E come Geremia non si decideva a tornare con lui, l’altro aggiunse: “Torna da Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, figliuolo di Shafan, che il re di Babilonia ha stabilito sulle città di Giuda, e dimora con lui in mezzo al popolo; ovvero va’ dovunque ti piacerà”. E il capo delle guardie gli diede delle provviste e un regalo, e l’accomiatò.

6 Then went Ieremiah vnto Gedaliah the sonne of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and dwelt there with him among the people that were left in the lande.

E Geremia andò da Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, a Mitspa, e dimorò con lui in mezzo al popolo che era rimasto nel paese.

7 Nowe when all the captaines of the hoste, which were in the fieldes, euen they and their men heard, that the King of Babel had made Gedaliah the sonne of Ahikam gouernour in the land, and that he had committed vnto him, men, and women, and children, and of the poore of the lande, that were not caried away captiue to Babel,

Or quando tutti i capi delle forze che erano per le campagne ebbero inteso, essi e la loro gente, che il re di Babilonia aveva stabilito Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, sul paese, e che gli aveva affidato gli uomini, le donne, i bambini, e quelli tra i poveri del paese che non erano stati menati in cattività a Babilonia,

8 Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, euen Ishmael the sonne of Nethaniah, and Iohanan, and Ionathan the sonnes of Kareah, and Seraiah the sonne of Tanehumeth, and the sonnes of Ephai, the Netophathite, and Iezaniah the sonne of Maachathi, they and their men.

si recarono da Ghedalia a Mitspa: erano Ismael, figliuolo di Nethania, Johanan e Gionathan, figliuoli di Kareah, Seraia, figliuolo di Tanhumeth, i figliuoli di Efai di Netofa, e Jezania, figliuolo del Maacatita: essi e i loro uomini.

9 And Gedaliah the sonne of Ahikam, the sonne of Shaphan sware vnto them, and to their men, saying, Feare not to serue the Caldeans: dwell in the lande, and serue the King of Babel, and it shall be well with you.

E Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, figliuolo di Shafan, giurò loro e alla lor gente, dicendo: “Non temete di servire i Caldei; abitate nel paese, servite il re di Babilonia, e tutto andrà bene per voi.

10 As for me, Beholde, I will dwell at Mizpah to serue the Caldeans, which will come vnto vs: but you, gather you wine, and sommer fruites, and oyle, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities, that ye haue taken.

Quanto a me, ecco, io risiederò a Mitspa per tenermi agli ordini dei Caldei, che verranno da noi; e voi raccogliete il vino, le frutta d’estate e l’olio; metteteli nei vostri vasi, e dimorate nelle città di cui avete preso possesso”.

11 Likewise when all the Iewes that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the King of Babel had left a remnant of Iudah, and that he had set ouer them Gedaliah the sonne of Ahikam the sonne of Shaphan,

Anche tutti i Giudei ch’erano in Moab, fra gli Ammoniti, nel paese d’Edom e in tutti i paesi, quand’udirono che il re di Babilonia aveva lasciato un residuo in Giuda e che avea stabilito su di loro Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, figliuolo di Shafan,

12 Euen all the Iewes returned out of all places where they were driuen, and came to the land of Iudah to Gedaliah vnto Mizpah, and gathered wine and sommer fruites, very much.

se ne tornarono da tutti i luoghi dov’erano stati dispersi, e si recarono nel paese di Giuda, da Ghedalia, a Mitspa; e raccolsero vino e frutta d’estate in grande abbondanza.

13 Moreouer Iohanan the sonne of Kareah, and all the captaines of the hoste, that were in the fieldes, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

Or Johanan, figliuolo di Kareah, e tutti i capi delle forze che erano per la campagna, vennero da Ghedalia a Mitspa, e gli dissero:

14 And said vnto him, Knowest thou not that Baalis the King of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the sonne of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the sonne of Ahikam beleeued them not.

“Sai tu che Baalis, re degli Ammoniti, ha mandato Ismael, figliuolo di Nethania, per toglierti la vita?” Ma Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, non credette loro.

15 Then Iohanan the sonne of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me goe, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the sonne of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it. Wherefore should he kill thee, that all the Iewes, which are gathered vnto thee, shoulde be scattered, and the remnant in Iudah perish?

Allora Johanan, figliuolo di Kareah, disse segretamente a Ghedalia, a Mitspa: “Lasciami andare a uccidere Ismael, figliuolo di Nethania; nessuno lo risaprà; e perché ti toglierebbe egli la vita, e tutti i Giudei che si son raccolti presso di te andrebbero essi dispersi, e il residuo di Giuda perirebb’egli?”

16 But Gedaliah the sonne of Ahikam said vnto Iohanan the sonne of Kareah, Thou shalt not doe this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

Ma Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, disse a Johanan, figliuolo di Kareah: “Non lo fare perché quello che tu dici d’Ismael è falso”.
