Jeremiah 4

1 O Israel, if thou returne, returne vnto me, saith the Lord: and if thou put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remoue.

“Si te conviertes, oh Israel, conviértete a Mí, dice Yahvé; y si quitas de delante de Mí tus abominaciones, no andarás más errante.

2 And thou shalt sweare, The Lord liueth in trueth, in iudgement, and in righteousnesse, and the nations shall be blessed in him, and shall glorie in him.

Si juras “¡Vive Yahvé!” en verdad, y con rectitud, y con justicia, serán bendecidas en Él las naciones y en Él se gloriarán.

3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Iudah, and to Ierusalem,

Pues así dice Yahvé a los hombres de Judá y de Jerusalén: Preparaos un campo virgen y no sembréis entre zarzas.

4 Breake vp your fallowe ground, and sowe not among the thornes: be circumcised to the Lord, and take away the foreskinnes of your hearts, ye men of Iudah, and inhabitants of Ierusalem, lest my wrath come foorth like fire, and burne, that none can quenche it, because of the wickednesse of your inuentions.

Circuncidaos para Yahvé, y quitad los prepucios de vuestros corazones, varones de Judá y moradores de Jerusalén, no sea que estalle, cual fuego, mi ira, y arda sin que haya quien la apague, por la maldad de vuestras obras.

5 Declare in Iudah, and shewe forth in Ierusalem, and say, Blowe the trumpet in the lande: cry, and gather together, and say, Assemble your selues, and let vs goe into strong cities.

Promulgadlo en Judá, y en Jerusalén dadlo a conocer; clamad y sonad la trompeta por el país, gritad fuerte y decid: «Juntaos, y retirémonos a las ciudades fortificadas.»

6 Set vp the standart in Zion: prepare to flee, and stay not: for I will bring a plague from the North, and a great destruction.

¡Alzad un estandarte, (para huir) a Sión, apresuraos, y no os detengáis! pues voy a traer desde el norte un mal y gran desolación.

7 The lyon is come vp from his denne, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is departed, and gone forth of his place to lay thy land waste, and thy cities shalbe destroyed without an inhabitant.

Ya salió el león del matorral, el asolador de pueblos se ha puesto en marcha, salió de su lugar para trocar tu tierra en un yermo; tus ciudades serán asoladas, sin que quede habitante.

8 Wherefore girde you with sackecloth: lament, and howle, for the fierce wrath of the Lord is not turned backe from vs.

Por tanto ceñíos de saco, llorad y lamentaos, pues no se aparta de nosotros a ardiente ira de Yahvé.

9 And in that day, saith the Lord, the heart of the King shall perish, and the heart of the princes and the Priestes shall be astonished, and the Prophets shall wonder.

En aquel día, dice Yahvé, desfallecerá el corazón del rey y el corazón de los príncipes; los sacerdotes quedaran pasmados, y los profetas llenos de consternación.”

10 Then saide I, Ah, Lord God, surely thou hast deceiued this people and Ierusalem, saying, Ye shall haue peace, and the sworde perceth vnto the heart.

Y dije yo: “¡Ah, Señor Yahvé! Ciertamente has engañado a este pueblo y a Jerusalén, diciendo: «Tendréis paz», cuando la espada ha llegado ya hasta el alma.”

11 At that time shall it bee saide to this people and to Ierusalem, A dry winde in the hie places of the wildernes commeth towarde ye daughter of my people, but neither to fanne nor to clense.

Entonces se dirá a este pueblo y a Jerusalén: “Un viento abrasador viene de los montes del desierto, en dirección a la hija de mi pueblo, mas no para aventar, ni para limpiar.

12 A mightie winde shall come vnto me from those places, and nowe will I also giue sentence vpon them.

Será un viento impetuoso el que ha de llegar. Ahora voy también yo a pronunciar sentencia contra ellos.”

13 Beholde, he shall come vp as the cloudes, and his charets shalbe as a tempest: his horses are lighter then eagles. Woe vnto vs, for wee are destroyed.

He aquí que avanza como las nubes; como torbellino son sus carros, y más ligeros que las águilas sus caballos. ¡Ay de nosotros, pues estamos perdidos!

14 O Ierusalem, wash thine heart from wickednes, that thou maiest be saued: how long shall thy wicked thoughtes remaine within thee?

¡Lava de malicia tu corazón, Jerusalén, para que seas salva! ¿Hasta cuándo hospedarás en tu corazón tus maliciosos pensamientos?

15 For a voyce declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.

Porque una voz trae las nuevas desde Dan, y anuncia la calamidad desde la montaña de Efraím.

16 Make ye mention of the heathen, and publish in Ierusalem, Beholde, the skoutes come from a farre countrey, and crie out against the cities of Iudah.

Hacedlo saber a las naciones, avisad a Jerusalén, que vienen sitiadores de una tierra remota, y lanzan gritos contra las ciudades de Judá.

17 They haue compassed her about as the watchmen of the fielde, because it hath prouoked me to wrath, saith the Lord.

Como guardas de campo están a la redonda contra ella, por cuanto se ha rebelado contra Mí —oráculo de Yahvé.

18 Thy wayes and thine inuentions haue procured thee these things, such is thy wickednesse: therefore it shall be bitter, therefore it shall perce vnto thine heart.

Tu conducta y tus malas obras te han valido esto; es (el fruto de) tu maldad; (castigo) amargo que te llega hasta el corazón.

19 My bely, my bely, I am pained, euen at the very heart: mine heart is troubled within me: I cannot be still: for my soule hath heard the sounde of the trumpet, and the alarme of the battell.

¡Mis entrañas! ¡Mis entrañas! ¡Qué dolor en las paredes de mi corazón! agitase mi corazón; no puedo estar quieto, por cuanto has oído, alma mía, el sonido de la trompeta, el grito estrepitoso de la guerra.

20 Destruction vpon destruction is cryed, for the whole lande is wasted: suddenly are my tents destroyed, and my curtaines in a moment.

Llegan noticias de desastre sobre desastre; todo el país está devastado; súbitamente han sido destruidas mis tiendas, de un momento a otro mis pabellones.

21 Howe long shall I see the standert, and heare the sounde of the trumpet?

¿Hasta cuándo he de ver la bandera, y oír el sonido del clarín?

22 For my people is foolish, they haue not knowen me: they are foolish children, and haue none vnderstanding: they are wise to doe euill, but to doe well they haue no knowledge.

¡Qué necio es mi pueblo!, no me han conocido; son hijos insensatos que no tienen inteligencia; son sabios para hacer el mal, pero el bien no saben hacerlo.

23 I haue looked vpon the earth, and loe, it was without forme and voide: and to the heauens, and they had no light.

Miro la tierra, y he aquí que está desolada y vacía; los cielos, y no hay luz en ellos.

24 I behelde the mountaines: and loe, they trembled and all the hilles shooke.

Miro los montes, y he aquí que tiemblan, y se conmueven todos los collados.

25 I behelde, and loe, there was no man, and all the birdes of the heauen were departed.

Miro, y he aquí que no hay hombre alguno, y las aves del cielo han huido todas.

26 I behelde, and loe, the fruitfull place was a wildernesse, and all the cities thereof were broken downe at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce wrath.

Miro, y he aquí que la tierra fértil es un desierto, y todas sus ciudades están destruidas, ante Yahvé, ante el ardor de su ira.

27 For thus hath the Lord saide, The whole lande shall be desolate: yet will I not make a full ende.

Porque así dice Yahvé: “Todo el país será un yermo, pero no lo arruinaré del todo.

28 Therefore shall the earth mourne, and the heauens aboue shall be darkened, because I haue pronounced it: I haue thought it, and will not repent, neither will I turne backe from it.

Por esto la tierra se pondrá de luto y se oscurecerán los cielos allá arriba; porque Yo lo he dicho, Yo lo he resuelto, y no me arrepiento ni me retracto.”

29 The whole citie shall flee, for the noyse of the horsemen and bowemen: they shall goe into thickets, and clime vp vpon the rockes: euery citie shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.

Al estruendo de la caballería y de los flecheros cada ciudad se pone en fuga; se retiran a las selvas y escalan las peñas; todas las ciudades están abandonadas, sin que en ellas quedase un solo habitante.

30 And when thou shalt be destroyed, what wilt thou doe? Though thou clothest thy selfe with skarlet, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of golde, though thou paintest thy face with colours, yet shalt thou trimme thy selfe in vaine: for thy louers will abhorre thee and seeke thy life.

Y tú, ¿qué harás, oh desolada? Aunque te vistas de púrpura, aunque te cubras con adornos de oro, y te pintes los ojos con antimonio; en vano te embellecerás; tus amantes te desprecian, buscan tu vida.

31 For I haue heard a noyse as of a woman trauailing, or as one labouring of her first child, euen the voyce of the daughter Zion that sigheth and stretcheth out her handes: woe is me nowe: for my soule fainteth because of the murtherers.

Oigo gritos como de parturienta, gemidos como de la que por primera vez da a luz; es la voz de la hija de Sion, que lanza ayes y extiende sus manos: “¡Ay de mí! desfallece mi alma a causa de la mortandad.”
