Jeremiah 38

1 Then Shephatiah the sonne of Mattan, and Gedaliah the sonne of Pashur, and Iucal the sonne of Shelemiah, and Pashur the sonne of Malchiah, heard the wordes that Ieremiah had spoken vnto all the people, saying,

Ouviu pois Sephatias, filho de Mathan, e Gedalias, filho de Pashur, e Juchal, filho de Selemias, e Pashur, filho de Malchias, as palavras que falava Jeremias a todo o povo, dizendo:

2 Thus sayth the Lord, He that remaineth in this citie, shall dye by the sworde, by the famine and by the pestilence: but hee that goeth foorth to the Caldeans, shall liue: for he shall haue his life for a praye, and shall liue.

Assim diz o Senhor: O que ficar nesta cidade morrerá à espada, à fome e de pestilência: mas o que sair aos caldeus viverá; porque a sua alma lhe será por despojo, e viverá.

3 Thus sayth the Lord, This citie shall surely be giuen into the hand of the King of Babels armie, which shall take it.

Assim diz o Senhor: Esta cidade infalivelmente se entregará na mão do exército do rei de Babilônia, e toma-la-á.

4 Therefore the Princes sayd vnto the King, We beseech you, let this man be put to death: for thus hee weakeneth the hands of the men of warre that remaine in this citie, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such wordes vnto them: for this man seeketh not the wealth of this people, but the hurt.

E disseram os príncipes ao rei: Morra este homem, visto que ele assim enfraquece as mãos dos homens de guerra que ficaram de resto nesta cidade, e as mãos de todo o povo, falando-lhes tais palavras; porque este homem não busca a paz para este povo, senão o mal

5 Then Zedekiah the King sayd, Behold, he is in your hands, for ye King can denie you nothing.

E disse o rei Zedekias: Eis que ele está na vossa mão: porque não é o rei que possa coisa alguma contra vós

6 Then tooke they Ieremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the sonne of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let downe Ieremiah with coards: and in the dungeon there was no water but myre: so Ieremiah stacke fast in the myre.

Então tomaram a Jeremias, e o lançaram no calaboiço de Malchias, filho do rei, que estava no átrio da guarda; e desceram a Jeremias com cordas; porém no calaboiço não havia água, senão lama; e atolou-se Jeremias na lama.

7 Now when Ebed-melech ye blacke More one of ye Eunuches, which was in the kings house, heard that they had put Ieremiah in the dungeon (then the King sate in the gate of Beniamin)

E, ouvindo Ebed-melech, o ethiope, um eunuco que então estava na casa do rei, que puseram a Jeremias no calaboiço (estava porém o rei assentado à porta de Benjamin),

8 And Ebed-melech went out of the Kings house, and spake to the King, saying,

Logo Ebed-melech saiu da casa do rei: e falou ao rei, dizendo:

9 My lorde the King, these men haue done euill in all that they haue done to Ieremiah the Prophet, whom they haue cast into the dungeon, and he dyeth for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the citie.

Ó rei, senhor meu, mal fizeram estes homens em tudo quanto fizeram a Jeremias, o profeta, lançando-o no calaboiço: sendo que morreria no lugar onde se achava à fome, pois já não há mais pão na cidade

10 Then the King commanded Ebed-melech the blacke More, saying, Take from hence thirtie men with thee, and take Ieremiah the Prophet out of the dungeon before he dye.

Então deu ordem o rei a Ebed-melech, o ethiope, dizendo: Toma contigo de aqui trinta homens, e tira a Jeremias, o profeta, do calaboiço, antes que morra.

11 So Ebed-melech tooke the men with him and went to the house of the King vnder the treasurie, and tooke there olde rotten ragges, and olde worne cloutes, and let them downe by coards into the dungeon to Ieremiah.

E tomou Ebed-melech os homens consigo, e foi à casa do rei, por debaixo da tesouraria, e tomou dali uns trapos velhos e rotos, e trapos velhos apodrecidos, e desceu-os a Jeremias no calaboiço com cordas.

12 And Ebed-melech the blacke More sayde vnto Ieremiah, Put now these olde rotten ragges and worne, vnder thine arme holes, betweene the coards. And Ieremiah did so.

E disse Ebed-melech, o ethiope, a Jeremias: Põe agora estes trapos velhos e rotos, já apodrecidos, debaixo dos sobacos de teus braços, por debaixo das cordas. E Jeremias o fez assim.

13 So they drewe vp Ieremiah with coards and tooke him vp out of the dungeon, and Ieremiah remained in the court of the prison.

E tiraram a Jeremias com as cordas, e o subiram do calaboiço; e ficou Jeremias no átrio da guarda.

14 Then Zedekiah the King sent, and tooke Ieremiah the Prophet vnto him, into the thirde entrie that is in the House of the Lord, and the King sayd vnto Ieremiah, I wil aske thee a thing: hide nothing from me.

Então enviou o rei Zedekias, e fez trazer a si a Jeremias, o profeta, à terceira entrada, que estava na casa do Senhor; e disse o rei a Jeremias: Pergunto-te uma coisa, não me encubras nada.

15 Then Ieremiah sayd to Zedekiah, If I declare it vnto thee, wilt not thou slay me? and if I giue thee counsell, thou wilt not heare me.

E disse Jeremias a Zedekias: declarando-ta eu, porventura não me matarás certamente? e, aconselhando-te eu, não me darás ouvido.

16 So the King sware secretly vnto Ieremiah, saying, As the Lord liueth that made vs these soules, I will not slay thee, nor giue thee into the hands of those men that seeke thy life.

Então jurou o rei Zedekias a Jeremias, em segredo, dizendo: Vive o Senhor, que nos fez esta alma, que não te matarei nem te entregarei na mão destes homens que procuram a tua morte.

17 Then sayd Ieremiah vnto Zedekiah, Thus sayth the Lord God of hostes, the God of Israel, If thou wilt goe foorth vnto the King of Babels princes, then thy soule shall liue, and this citie shall not be burnt vp with fire, and thou shalt liue, and thine house.

Então Jeremias disse a Zedekias: Assim diz o Senhor, Deus dos exércitos, Deus de Israel: Se voluntariamente saires aos príncipes do rei de Babilônia, então viverá a tua alma, e esta cidade não se queimará a fogo, e viverás tu e a tua casa.

18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the King of Babels princes, then shall this citie be giuen into the hand of ye Caldeans, and they shall burne it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hands.

Porém, se não saires aos príncipes do rei de Babilônia, então será entregue esta cidade na mão dos caldeus, e queima-la-ão a fogo, e tu não escaparás da mão deles.

19 And Zedekiah the King sayde vnto Ieremiah, I am carefull for the Iewes that are fled vnto the Caldeans, least they deliuer mee into their hands, and they mocke me.

E disse o rei Zedekias a Jeremias: Receio-me dos judeus, que cairam para os caldeus; que porventura me entreguem na sua mão, e escarneçam de mim.

20 But Ieremiah sayd, They shall not deliuer thee: hearken vnto the voyce of the Lord, I beseech thee, which I speake vnto thee: so shall it be well vnto thee, and thy soule shall liue.

E disse Jeremias: Não te entregarão: ouve, te peço, a voz do Senhor, conforme a qual eu te falo; e bem te irá, e viverá a tua alma

21 But if thou wilt refuse to go forth, this is the worde that the Lord hath shewed me.

Porém, se tu não quizeres sair, esta é a palavra que me mostrou o Senhor.

22 And beholde, all the women that are left in the King of Iudahs house, shalbe brought forth to the King of Babels princes: and those women shall say, Thy friends haue perswaded thee, and haue preuailed against thee: thy feete are fastened in the myre, and they are turned backe.

Eis que todas as mulheres que ficaram de resto na casa do rei de Judá serão levadas fora para os príncipes do rei de Babilônia, e elas mesmas dirão: Teus pacíficos te incitaram e prevaleceram contra ti, atolaram-se os teus pés na lama, voltaram para traz.

23 So they shall bring out all thy wiues, and thy children to the Caldeans, and thou shalt not escape out of their hands, but shalt be taken by the hand of the King of Babel: and this citie shalt thou cause to be burnt with fire.

Assim que a todas as tuas mulheres e a teus filhos levarão para fora aos caldeus, e nem tu escaparás da sua mão, antes pela mão do rei de Babilônia serás preso, e esta cidade queimará a fogo

24 Then said Zedekiah vnto Ieremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

Então disse Zedekias a Jeremias: ninguém saiba estas palavras, e não morrerás.

25 But if ye princes vnderstand that I haue talked with thee, and they come vnto thee, and say vnto thee, Declare vnto vs nowe, what thou hast sayde vnto the King, hide it not from vs, and we will not slay thee: also what the King sayd vnto thee,

E quando os príncipes, ouvindo que falei contigo, vierem a ti, e te disserem: Declara-nos agora o que disseste ao rei, não no-lo encubras, e não te mataremos: e que te falou o rei?

26 Then shalt thou say vnto them, I humbly besought the King that he would not cause me to returne to Iehonathans house, to die there.

Então lhes dirás: Lancei eu a minha súplica diante do rei, que não me fizesse tornar à casa de Jonathan, para morrer ali

27 Then came all the princes vnto Ieremiah and asked him. And he tolde them according to all these wordes that the King had commanded: so they left off speaking with him, for the matter was not perceiued.

Vindo pois todos os príncipes a Jeremias, e perguntando-lhe, declarou-lhes conforme todas as palavras que o rei lhe havia ordenado: e o deixaram, porque não se ouviu o negócio.

28 So Ieremiah abode still in the court of the prison, vntill the day that Ierusalem was taken: and he was there, when Ierusalem was taken.

E ficou Jeremias no átrio da guarda, até ao dia em que foi tomada Jerusalém, e ainda ali estava quando foi tomada Jerusalém.
