Jeremiah 34
1 The worde which came vnto Ieremiah from the Lord (when Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel, and all his hoste, and all the kingdomes of the earth, that were vnder the power of his hand, and all people fought against Ierusalem, and against all the cites thereof) saying,
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahvé, lorsque Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, avec toute son armée, tous les royaumes de la terre qui étaient sous sa domination, et tous les peuples, combattaient contre Jérusalem et contre toutes ses villes, en disant:
2 Thus sayth the Lord God of Israel, Goe, and speake to Zedekiah King of Iudah, and tell him, Thus sayth the Lord, Beholde, I will giue this citie into the hand of the King of Babel, and he shall burne it with fire,
Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, dit: « Va, parle à Sédécias, roi de Juda, et dis-lui: Yahvé dit: « Voici, je livre cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone et il la brûlera par le feu.
3 And thou shall not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and deliuered into his hand, and thine eyes shall beholde the face of the King of Babel, and he shall speake with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babel.
Tu n'échapperas pas à sa main, mais tu seras certainement pris et livré entre ses mains. Tes yeux verront les yeux du roi de Babylone, et il te parlera bouche à bouche. Tu iras à Babylone. »'
4 Yet heare the worde of the Lord, O Zedekiah, King of Iudah: thus sayth the Lord of thee, Thou shalt not dye by the sword,
« Mais écoute la parole de Yahvé, Sédécias, roi de Juda. Yahvé dit à ton sujet: 'Tu ne mourras pas par l'épée'.
5 But thou shalt die in peace: and according to the burning for thy fathers the former Kings which were before thee, so shall they burne odours for thee, and they shall lament thee, saying, Oh lorde: for I haue pronounced the worde, sayth the Lord.
Tu mourras dans la paix; et avec les brûlures de tes pères, les anciens rois qui t'ont précédé, ils feront une brûlure pour toi. Ils te pleureront en disant: « Ah Seigneur! » car j'ai dit la parole, dit Yahvé. »
6 Then Ieremiah the Prophet spake all these words vnto Zedekiah King of Iudah in Ierusalem,
Jérémie, le prophète, adressa toutes ces paroles à Sédécias, roi de Juda, à Jérusalem,
7 (When the King of Babels hoste fought against Ierusalem, and against all the cities of Iudah, that were left, euen against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these strong cities remained of the cities of Iudah)
au moment où l'armée du roi de Babylone combattait contre Jérusalem et contre toutes les villes de Juda qui restaient, contre Lakis et contre Azéka, car ce sont les seules villes de Juda qui restaient comme villes fortes.
8 This is the worde that came vnto Ieremiah from the Lord, after that the King Zedekiah had made a couenant with all the people, which were at Ierusalem, to proclaime libertie vnto them,
La parole fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahvé, après que le roi Sédécias eut fait alliance avec tout le peuple qui était à Jérusalem, pour lui annoncer la liberté,
9 That euery man should let his seruant go free, and euery man his handmayde, which was an Ebrue or an Ebruesse, and that none should serue himselfe of them, to wit, of a Iewe his brother.
que chacun laisserait aller en liberté son serviteur et sa servante, hébreu ou hébreu, afin que personne ne les asservisse plus, d'un Juif à son frère.
10 Now when all the princes, and all the people which had agreed to the couenant, heard that euery one should let his seruant go free, and euery one his handmaide, and that none should serue them selues of them any more, they obeyed and let them go.
Tous les princes et tout le peuple obéirent à ceux qui avaient conclu l'alliance, pour que chacun libère son serviteur et chacune de ses servantes, et que personne ne les asservisse plus. Ils obéirent et les laissèrent aller,
11 But afterwarde they repented and caused the seruants and the handmayds, whom they had let go free, to returne, and helde them in subiection as seruants and handmayds.
mais ensuite ils se retournèrent, firent revenir les serviteurs et les servantes qu'ils avaient laissés aller en liberté, et les soumirent comme serviteurs et comme servantes.
12 Therefore the worde of the Lord came vnto Ieremiah from the Lord, saying,
La parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahvé, en ces termes:
13 Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I made a couenant with your fathers, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of seruants, saying,
« Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, dit: 'J'ai fait une alliance avec vos pères, le jour où je les ai fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude, en disant:
14 At the terme of seuen yeres let ye go, euery man his brother an Ebrewe which hath bene solde vnto thee: and when he hath serued the sixe yeres, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers obeyed me not, neither inclined their eares.
Au bout de sept ans, chacun de vous relâchera son frère hébreu qui vous a été vendu et qui vous a servi pendant six ans. Tu le laisseras partir libre de chez toi. Mais vos pères ne m'ont pas écouté, et n'ont pas prêté l'oreille.
15 And ye were nowe turned, and had done right in my sight in proclayming libertie, euery man to his neighbour, and ye had made a couenant before mee in the house, whereupon my Name is called.
Vous vous étiez maintenant retournés, et vous aviez fait ce qui est juste à mes yeux, en proclamant chacun la liberté de son prochain. Vous aviez fait une alliance devant moi, dans la maison qui porte mon nom;
16 But ye repented, and polluted my Name: for ye haue caused euery man his seruant, and euery man his handmayde, whom ye had set at libertie at their pleasure, to returne, and holde them in subiection to bee vnto you as seruantes and as handmaydes.
mais vous vous êtes détournés et vous avez profané mon nom, et chacun a fait revenir son esclave et sa servante, que vous aviez laissés libres à leur gré. Vous les avez soumis, pour qu'ils soient pour vous des serviteurs et des servantes.'"
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord, Ye haue not obeyed mee, in proclayming freedome euery man to his brother, and euery man to his neighbour: beholde, I proclaime a libertie for you, saith the Lord, to the sworde, to the pestilence, and to the famine, and I will make you a terrour to all the kingdomes of the earth.
C'est pourquoi Yahvé dit: « Vous ne m'avez pas écouté, pour proclamer la liberté, chacun pour son frère, chacun pour son prochain. Voici, je vous proclame la liberté, dit Yahvé, devant l'épée, la peste et la famine. Je vous ferai aller et venir parmi tous les royaumes de la terre.
18 And I will giue those men that haue broken my couenant, and haue not kept the wordes of the couenant, which they had made before me, when they cut the calfe in twaine, and passed betweene the partes thereof:
Je livrerai les hommes qui ont transgressé mon alliance, qui n'ont pas accompli les paroles de l'alliance qu'ils ont conclue devant moi quand ils ont coupé le veau en deux et sont passés entre ses parties:
19 The princes of Iudah, and the princes of Ierusalem, the Eunuches, and the Priestes, and all the people of the lande, which passed betweene the partes of the calfe,
les princes de Juda, les princes de Jérusalem, les eunuques, les prêtres et tout le peuple du pays, qui sont passés entre les parties du veau.
20 I wil euen giue them into the hand of their enemies, and into the handes of them that seeke their life: and their dead bodies shalbe for meate vnto the foules of the heauen, and to the beastes of the earth.
Je les livrerai entre les mains de leurs ennemis et entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie. Leurs cadavres serviront de nourriture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux de la terre.
21 And Zedekiah King of Iudah, and his princes will I giue into the hand of their enemies, and into the hande of them that seeke their life, and into the hande of the King of Babels hoste, which are gone vp from you.
« Je livrerai Sédécias, roi de Juda, et ses princes entre les mains de leurs ennemis, entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie et entre les mains de l'armée du roi de Babylone, qui s'est éloignée de vous.
22 Beholde, I will commande, saith the Lord, and cause them to returne to this citie, and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burne it with fire: and I will make the cities of Iudah desolate without an inhabitant.
Voici que j'ordonne, dit Yahvé, et que je les fais revenir dans cette ville. Ils la combattront, la prendront et la brûleront par le feu. Je ferai des villes de Juda une désolation, sans habitant. »
