Isaiah 40
1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, will your God say.
Consolez, consolez mon peuple, dit votre Dieu.
2 Speake comfortably to Ierusalem, and crye vnto her, that her warrefare is accomplished, that her iniquitie is pardoned: for she hath receiued of the Lords hand double for all her sinnes.
Parlez au cœur de Jérusalem, et criez-lui que son temps d’épreuve est fini, que son crime est expié, qu’elle a reçu de la main du Seigneur double peine pour toutes ses fautes.
3 A voyce cryeth in the wildernesse, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make streight in the desert a path for our God.
Une voix proclame: "Dans le désert, déblayez la route de l’Eternel; nivelez, dans la campagne aride, une chaussée pour notre Dieu!
4 Euery valley shall be exalted, and euery mountaine and hill shall be made lowe: and the crooked shalbe streight, and the rough places plaine.
Que toute vallée soit exhaussée, que toute montagne et colline s’abaissent, que les pentes se changent en plaines, les crêtes escarpées en vallons!
5 And the glory of the Lord shalbe reueiled, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
La gloire du Seigneur va se révéler, et toutes les créatures, ensemble, en seront témoins: c’est la bouche de l’Eternel qui le déclare."
6 A voyce saide, Crie. And he saide, What shall I crie? All flesh is grasse, and all the grace thereof is as the floure of the fielde.
Une voix dit: "Proclame!" Et on a répondu: "Que proclamerai-je?" "Toute chair est comme de l’herbe, et toute sa beauté est comme la fleur des champs.
7 The grasse withereth, the floure fadeth, because the Spirite of the Lord bloweth vpon it: surely the people is grasse.
L’Herbe se dessèche, la fleur se fane, quand l’haleine du Seigneur a soufflé sur elles. Or, le peuple est comme cette herbe.
8 The grasse withereth, the floure fadeth: but the worde of our God shall stand for euer.
L’Herbe se dessèche, la fleur se fane, mais la parole de notre Dieu subsiste à jamais."
9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee vp into the hie mountaine: O Ierusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift vp thy voyce with strength: lift it vp, be not afraide: say vnto the cities of Iudah, Beholde your God.
Monte sur une montagne élevée, porteuse de bonnes nouvelles pour Sion, élève ta voix avec force, messagère de Jérusalem! Elève-la sans crainte, annonce aux villes de Juda: "Voici votre Dieu!"
10 Beholde, the Lord God will come with power, and his arme shall rule for him: beholde, his rewarde is with him, and his worke before him,
Oui, voici le Seigneur, l’Eternel, s’avançant en héros, avec son bras triomphant; voici, il apporte son salaire avec lui, et sa rémunération le précède.
11 He shall feede his flocke like a shepheard: he shall gather the lambes with his arme, and cary them in his bosome, and shall guide them with young.
Tel un berger, menant paître son troupeau, recueille les agneaux dans ses bras, les porte dans son sein et conduit avec douceur les mères qui allaitent.
12 Who hath measured the waters in his fist? and counted heauen with the spanne, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure? and weighed ye mountaines in a weight, and the hilles in a balance?
Qui a mesuré les eaux dans le creux de sa main, pris les dimensions du ciel à l’empan? Qui a jaugé la poussière de la terre, pesé au crochet les montagnes, et les coteaux avec une balance?
13 Who hath instructed ye Spirit of the Lord? or was his counseler or taught him?
Qui a embrassé l’esprit de l’Eternel? Qui a été le conseiller de sa pensée?
14 Of whom tooke he counsell, and who instructed him and taught him in the way of iudgement? or taught him knowledge, and shewed vnto him the way of vnderstanding?
Avec qui a-t-il délibéré pour s’éclairer, pour apprendre la voie de la justice? Qui lui a donné des leçons de sagesse et indiqué le chemin de l’intelligence?
15 Beholde, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the dust of the balance: beholde, he taketh away the yles as a litle dust.
Certes, les nations, à ses yeux, sont comme une goutte tombant du seau, comme un grain de poussière dans la balance; certes, il ballotterait les îles comme des atomes.
16 And Lebanon is not sufficient for fire, nor the beastes thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.
Le Liban ne suffirait pas à nourrir le feu de son autel; ses bêtes ne suffiraient pas à un holocauste.
17 All nations before him are as nothing, and they are counted to him, lesse then nothing, and vanitie.
Toutes les nations sont comme rien devant lui; il les considère comme le vide et le néant.
18 To whom then wil ye liken God? or what similitude will ye set vp vnto him?
À qui donc pourriez-vous comparer Dieu et quelle image lui donneriez-vous comme pendant?
19 The workeman melteth an image, or the goldsmith beateth it out in golde, or the goldesmith maketh siluer plates.
Une statue est coulée par le fondeur, plaquée d’or par l’orfèvre, qui la garnit encore de chaînettes d’argent.
20 Doeth not the poore chuse out a tree that will not rot, for an oblation? he seeketh also vnto him a cunning workeman, to prepare an image, that shall not be moued.
Celui qui est trop pauvre pour une telle offrande choisit un bois incorruptible, puis s’en va chercher un ouvrier habile, pour fabriquer une idole qui ne bronche jamais.
21 Know ye nothing? haue ye not heard it? hath it not bene tolde you from the beginning? haue ye not vnderstand it by the foundation of the earth?
Vous ne savez donc pas! Vous ne comprenez donc pas! Ne vous l’a-t-on pas appris dès l’origine? Ne saisissez-vous pas ce qu’enseignent les fondements de la terre?
22 He sitteth vpon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grashoppers, hee stretcheth out ye heauens, as a curtaine, and spreadeth them out, as a tent to dwell in.
C’Est Lui qui siège au-dessus du globe de la terre, dont les habitants sont pour lui comme des sauterelles; c’est Lui qui déroule les cieux comme une tenture, qui les déploie comme un pavillon, pour sa résidence.
23 He bringeth the princes to nothing, and maketh the iudges of the earth, as vanitie,
C’Est lui qui réduit les princes à néant, qui fait un rien des arbitres du monde.
24 As though they were not plated, as though they were not sowen, as though their stocke tooke no roote in the earth: for he did euen blow vpon them, and they withered, and the whirlewinde will take them away as stubble.
À peine sont-ils plantés, à peine sont-ils semés, à peine leur tronc a-t-il pris racine dans le sol, que déjà il souffle sur eux et ils se dessèchent, et un ouragan les emporte comme le chaume.
25 To whom nowe will ye liken me, that I should be like him, saith the Holy one?
"À qui donc m’assimilerez-vous, à qui vais-je ressembler?" dit le Saint.
26 Lift vp your eyes on hie, and beholde who hath created these things, and bringeth out their armies by nomber, and calleth them all by names? by the greatnesse of his power and mightie strength nothing faileth.
Levez les regards vers les cieux et voyez! Qui les a appelés à l’existence? Qui fait défiler leur armée en bon ordre? Tous, il les appelle par leur nom, et telle est sa puissance et son autorité souveraine que pas un ne fait défaut.
27 Why sayest thou, O Iaakob, and speakest O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my iudgement is passed ouer of my God?
Pourquoi dis-tu, ô Jacob, t’écries-tu, ô Israël: "Ma voie est inconnue à l’Eternel, mon droit échappe à mon Dieu?"
28 Knowest thou not? or hast thou not heard, that the euerlasting God, the Lord hath created the endes of the earth? he neither fainteth, nor is wearie: there is no searching of his vnderstanding.
Ne le sais-tu donc pas? Ne l’as-tu pas ouï dire? Le Seigneur est le Dieu de l’Eternité, le Créateur des dernières limites du monde; il n’éprouve ni fatigue, ni lassitude: il n’est point de bornes à son intelligence!
29 But he giueth strength vnto him that fainteth, and vnto him that hath no strength, he encreaseth power.
Il redonne la vigueur au courbaturé et double le courage de celui qui est à bout de forces.
30 Euen the yong men shall faint, and be wearie, and the yong men shall stumble and fall.
Que les adolescents soient las et harassés, que les jeunes gens tombent en défaillance!
31 But they that waite vpon the Lord, shall renue their strength: they shall lift vp the wings as the eagles: they shall runne, and not be wearie, and they shall walke and not faint.
Ceux qui mettent leur espoir en Dieu acquièrent de nouvelles forces, ils prennent le rapide essor des aigles; ils courent et ne sont pas fatigués, ils vont et ne se lassent point.
