Isaiah 36
1 Nowe in the fourteenth yeere of King Hezekiah, Saneherib King of Asshur came vp against al the strong cities of Iudah, and tooke them.
ヒゼキヤ王の第十四年に、アッスリヤの王セナケリブが上ってきて、ユダのすべての堅固な町々を攻め取った。
2 And the King of Asshur sent Rabshakeh from Lachish toward Ierusalem vnto King Hezekiah, with a great hoste, and he stood by ye conduite of the vpper poole in the path of the fullers fielde.
アッスリヤの王はラキシからラブシャケをエルサレムにつかわし、大軍を率いてヒゼキヤ王のもとへ行かせた。ラブシャケは布さらしの野へ行く大路に沿う、上の池の水道のかたわらに立った。
3 Then came foorth vnto him Eliakim the sonne of Hilkiah the steward of the house, and Shebna the chanceler, and Ioah the sonne of Asaph the recorder.
この時ヒルキヤの子である宮内卿エリアキム、書記官セブナおよびアサフの子である史官ヨアが彼の所に出てきた。
4 And Rabshakeh sayde vnto them, Tell you Hezekiah, I pray you, Thus sayth the great King, the King of Asshur, What confidence is this, wherein thou trustest?
ラブシャケは彼らに言った、「ヒゼキヤに言いなさい、『大王アッスリヤの王はこう仰せられる、あなたが頼みとする者は何か。
5 I say, Surely I haue eloquence, but counsell and strength are for the warre: on whom then doest thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
口先だけの言葉が戦争をする計略と力だと考えるのか。あなたは今だれを頼んで、わたしにそむいたのか。
6 Loe, thou trustest in this broken staffe of reede on Egypt, whereupon if a man leane, it will goe into his hand, and pearce it: so is Pharaoh King of Egypt, vnto all that trust in him.
見よ、あなたはかの折れかけている葦のつえエジプトを頼みとしているが、それは人が寄りかかるとき、その人の手を刺し通す。エジプトの王パロはすべて寄り頼む者にそのようにするのだ。
7 But if thou say to me, We trust in the Lord our God. Is not that he, whose hie places and whose altars Hezekiah tooke downe, and said to Iudah and to Ierusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
しかし、あなたがもし「われわれはわれわれの神、主を頼む」とわたしに言うならば、ヒゼキヤがユダとエルサレムに告げて、「あなたがたはこの祭壇の前で礼拝しなければならない」と言って除いたのは、その神の高き所と祭壇ではなかったのか。
8 Nowe therefore giue hostages to my lorde the King of Asshur, and I wil giue thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders vpon them.
さあ、今わたしの主君アッスリヤの王とかけをせよ。もしあなたの方に乗る人があるならば、わたしは馬二千頭を与えよう。
9 For howe canst thou despise any captaine of the least of my lordes seruants? and put thy trust on Egypt for charets and for horsemen?
あなたはエジプトを頼み、戦車と騎兵を請い求めているが、わたしの主君の家来のうちの最も小さい一隊長でさえ、どうして撃退することができようか。
10 And am I now come vp without the Lord to this land to destroy it? The Lord sayd vnto me, Goe vp against this land and destroy it.
わたしがこの国を滅ぼすために上ってきたのは、主の許しなしでしたことであろうか。主はわたしに、この国へ攻め上って、これを滅ぼせと言われたのだ』」。
11 Then sayd Eliakim and Shebna and Ioah vnto Rabshakeh, Speake, I pray thee, to thy seruants in the Aramites language, (for we vnderstand it) and talke not with vs in the Iewes tongue, in the audience of the people that are on the wall.
その時、エリアキム、セブナおよびヨアはラブシャケに言った、「どうぞ、アラム語でしもべたちに話してください。わたしたちはそれがわかるからです。城壁の上にいる民の聞いているところで、わたしたちにユダヤの言葉で話さないでください」。
12 Then said Rabshakeh, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee to speake these wordes, and not to the men that sit on the wall? that they may eate their owne doung, and drinke their owne pisse with you?
しかしラブシャケは言った、「わたしの主君は、あなたの主君とあなたにだけでなく、城壁の上に座している人々にも、この言葉を告げるために、わたしをつかわされたのではないか。彼らをも、あなたがたと共に自分の糞尿を食い飲みするに至らせるためではないか」。
13 So Rabshakeh stood, and cryed with a loude voyce in the Iewes language, and sayd, Heare the wordes of the great King, of the King of Asshur.
そしてラブシャケは立ちあがり、ユダヤの言葉で大声に呼ばわって言った、「大王、アッスリヤの王の言葉を聞け。
14 Thus saith the King, Let not Hezekiah deceiue you: for he shall not be able to deliuer you.
王はこう仰せられる、『あなたがたはヒゼキヤに欺かれてはならない。彼はあなたがたを救い出すことはできない。
15 Neither let Hezekiah make you to trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliuer vs: this citie shall not be giuen ouer into the hand of the King of Asshur.
ヒゼキヤが、主は必ずわれわれを救い出される。この町はアッスリヤの王の手に陥ることはない、と言っても、あなたがたは主を頼みとしてはならない』。
16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus sayth the King of Asshur, Make appointment with me, and come out to me, that euery man may eate of his owne vine, and euery man of his owne fig tree, and drinke euery man the water of his owne well,
あなたがたはヒゼキヤの言葉を聞いてはならない。アッスリヤの王はこう仰せられる、『あなたがたは、わたしと和ぼくして、わたしに降服せよ。そうすれば、あなたがたはめいめい自分のぶどうの実を食べ、めいめい自分のいちじくの実を食べ、めいめい自分の井戸の水を飲むことができる。
17 Till I come and bring you to a land like your owne land, euen a land of wheate, and wine, a land of bread and vineyardes,
やがて、わたしが来て、あなたがたを一つの国へ連れて行く。それは、あなたがたの国のように穀物とぶどう酒の多い地、パンとぶどう畑の多い地だ。
18 Least Hezekiah deceiue you, saying, The Lord wil deliuer vs. Hath any of the gods of the nations deliuered his land out of the hand of the King of Asshur?
ヒゼキヤが、主はわれわれを救われる、と言って、あなたがたを惑わすことのないように気をつけよ。もろもろの国の神々のうち、どの神がその国をアッスリヤの王の手から救ったか。
19 Where is the god of Hamath, and of Arpad? where is the god of Sepharuaim? or howe haue they deliuered Samaria out of mine hand?
ハマテやアルパデの神々はどこにいるか。セパルワイムの神々はどこにいるか。彼らはサマリヤをわたしの手から救い出したか。
20 Who is hee among all the gods of these lands, that hath deliuered their countrey out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliuer Ierusalem out of mine hand?
これらの国々のすべての神々のうちに、だれかその国をわたしの手から救い出した者があるか。主がどうしてエルサレムをわたしの手から救い出すことができよう』」。
21 Then they kept silence, and answered him not a worde: for the Kings commandement was, saying, Answere him not.
しかし民は黙ってひと言も答えなかった。王が命じて、「彼に答えてはならない」と言っておいたからである。
22 Then came Eliakim the sonne of Hilkiah the steward of the house, and Shebna the chanceller, and Ioah the sonne of Asaph the recorder, vnto Hezekiah with rent clothes, and tolde him the wordes of Rabshakeh.
その時ヒルキヤの子である宮内卿エリアキム、書記官セブナおよびアサフの子である史官ヨアは衣を裂き、ヒゼキヤのもとに来て、ラブシャケの言葉を彼に告げた。
