Isaiah 31
1 Woe vnto them that goe downe into Egypt for helpe, and stay vpon horses, and trust in charets, because they are many, and in horsemen, because they be very strong: but they looke not vnto the holy one of Israel, nor seeke vnto the Lord.
Malheur à ceux qui descendent en Egypte pour y chercher de l’aide, qui s’appuient sur des chevaux, qui mettent leur confiance dans le nombre des chars et la force des cavaliers, mais qui ne tournent pas leurs regards vers le Saint d’Israël, ne se soucient pas de l’Eternel!
2 But he yet is wisest: therefore he wil bring euill, and not turne backe his worde, but he will arise against the house of the wicked, and against the helpe of them that worke vanitie.
Lui aussi, il est sage; il amène le malheur et ne retire pas sa parole; il se lèvera contre la maison des méchants, contre les alliés des impies.
3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God, and their horses flesh and not spirite: and when the Lord shall stretch out his hand, the helper shall fall, and hee that is holpen shall fall, and they shall altogether faile.
L’Egyptien est un homme, non un dieu: ses chevaux sont chair et non esprit. L’Eternel étend sa main, le protecteur trébuche, et le protégé tombe, et tous deux périssent ensemble.
4 For thus hath the Lord spoken vnto me, As the lyon or lyons whelpe roareth vpon his praye, against whom if a multitude of shepheards be called, hee will not be afraide at their voyce, neither will humble him selfe at their noise: so shall the Lord of hostes come downe to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.
Car ainsi m’a parlé le Seigneur: "Tels le lion et le lionceau, qui, grondant auprès de leur proie et ameutant contre eux une multitude de bergers, ne se laissent point effrayer par leurs cris ni intimider par leurs clameurs, tel l’Eternel-Cebaot descendra pour guerroyer sur la montagne de Sion et ses hauteurs.
5 As birds that flie, so shall the Lord of hostes defend Ierusalem by defending and deliuering, by passing through and preseruing it.
Comme des oiseaux qui voltigent sur leur couvée, —ainsi l’Eternel couvrira de sa protection Jérusalem, qu’il ne cessera d’abriter et de défendre, d’épargner et de sauver.
6 O ye children of Israel, turne againe, in as much as ye are sunken deepe in rebellion.
Enfants d’Israël, revenez à Celui dont vous êtes si profondément séparés!
7 For in that day euery man shall cast out his idoles of siluer, and his idoles of golde, which your handes haue made you, euen a sinne.
En ce jour, vous répudierez avec dégoût ces idoles d’argent et ces idoles d’or que vous vous êtes fabriquées de vos mains coupables.
8 Then shall Asshur fall by the sworde, not of man, neither shall the sworde of man deuoure him, and hee shall flee from the sworde, and his yong men shall faint.
Et Achour tombera sous une épée qui ne sera pas celle d’un homme, il sera dévoré par un glaive qui ne sera pas celui d’un mortel; que s’il fuit devant l’épée, ses jeunes guerriers seront réduits au servage.
9 And he shall go for feare to his towre, and his princes shall be afraide of the standart, sayeth the Lord, whose fire is in Zion, and his fornace in Ierusalem.
Son rocher s’évanouira de terreur, ses princes seront épouvantés par un étendard: telle est la parole de l’Eternel, qui a son foyer à Sion et sa fournaise à Jérusalem.
