Genesis 26
1 And there was a famine in the lande besides the first famine that was in the dayes of Abraham. Wherefore Izhak went to Abimelech King of the Philistims vnto Gerar.
Cependant une famine étant survenue dans ce pays, après la disette qui était arrivée dans les jours d’Abraham, Isaac s’en alla vers Abimélech, roi des Philistins, à Gérara.
2 For the Lord appeared vnto him, and sayde, Goe not downe into Egypt, but abide in the land which I shall shewe vnto thee.
Or le Seigneur lui apparut, et dit: Ne descends pas en Égypte, mais demeure dans le pays que je te dirai.
3 Dwell in this lande, and I will be with thee, and will blesse thee: for to thee, and to thy seede I will giue all these countreys: and I will performe the othe which I sware vnto Abraham thy father.
Restes-y comme étranger, et je serai avec toi, et je te bénirai; car c’est à toi et à ta postérité que je donnerai toutes ces contrées, accomplissant le serment que j’ai fait à Abraham ton père.
4 Also I wil cause thy seede to multiply as the starres of heauen, and will giue vnto thy seede all these countreys: and in thy seede shall all the nations of the earth be blessed,
Et je multiplierai ta postérité comme les étoiles du ciel; et je donnerai à tes descendants toutes ces contrées, et seront bénies en ta postérité toutes les nations de la terre;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voyce and kept mine ordinance, my commandements, my statutes, and my Lawes.
Parce qu’Abraham a obéi à ma voix, qu’il a gardé mes préceptes et mes commandements, et qu’il a observé les cérémonies et les lois.
6 So Izhak dwelt in Gerar.
Isaac donc demeura à Gérara.
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife, and he sayd, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife, least, sayde he, the men of the place shoulde kill me, because of Rebekah: for she was beautifull to the eye.
Comme il était interrogé par les hommes de ce lieu sur sa femme, il répondit: C’est ma sœur; car il avait craint d’avouer qu’elle lui était unie par le mariage, pensant que peut-être ils le tueraient à cause de sa beauté.
8 So after hee had bene there long time, Abimelech King of the Philistims looked out at a windowe, and loe, he sawe Izhak sporting with Rebekah his wife.
Or, lorsque beaucoup de jours furent passés, et qu’il demeurait encore en ce même endroit, Abimélech, roi des Philistins, regardant par la fenêtre, le vit jouant avec Rébecca, sa femme.
9 Then Abimelech called Izhak, and sayde, Loe, shee is of a suertie thy wife, and why saydest thou, She is my sister? To whom Izhak answered, Because I thought this, It may be that I shall dye for her.
Et l’ayant fait venir, il dit: Il est évident que c’est ta femme; pourquoi as-tu menti, disant que c’est ta sœur? Il répondit: J’ai eu peur de mourir à cause d’elle.
10 Then Abimelech said, Why hast thou done this vnto vs? one of the people had almost lien by thy wife, so shouldest thou haue brought sinne vpon vs.
Et Abimélech reprit: Pourquoi nous en as-tu imposé? quelqu’un du peuple aurait pu abuser de ta femme, et tu aurais attiré sur nous un grand péché. Et il commanda à tout le peuple, disant:
11 Then Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man, or his wife, shall die the death.
Quiconque touchera la femme de cet homme, mourra de mort.
12 Afterwarde Izhak sowed in that lande, and founde in the same yeere an hundreth folde by estimation: and so the Lord blessed him.
Et Isaac sema en ce pays, et il trouva dans l’année même le centuple; car le Seigneur le bénit.
13 And the man waxed mightie, and stil increased, till he was exceeding great,
Ainsi cet homme, s’enrichit, et il allait prospérant et s’accroissant, jusqu’à ce qu’il devint extrêmement puissant.
14 For he had flockes of sheepe, and heards of cattell, and a mightie housholde: therefore the Philistims had enuy at him.
Il eut aussi des possessions de brebis et de gros troupeaux, et une nombreuse famille. A cause de cela, les Philistins jaloux de lui,
15 In so much that the Philistims stopped and filled vp with earth all the welles, which his fathers seruantes digged in his father Abrahams time.
Comblèrent en ce temps-là tous les puits qu’avaient creusés les serviteurs de son père Abraham, les remplissant de terre;
16 Then Abimelech sayde vnto Izhak, Get thee from vs, for thou art mightier then wee a great deale.
Tellement qu’Abimélech dit à Isaac: Eloigne-toi de nous, parce que tu es devenu beaucoup plus puissant que nous.
17 Therefore Izhak departed thence and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
Et lui descendant, vint au torrent de Gérara pour y habiter.
18 And Izhak returning, digged the welles of water, which they had digged in the dayes of Abraham his father: for the Philistims had stopped them after the death of Abraham, and hee gaue them the same names, which his father gaue them.
Il creusa de nouveau les autres puits qu’avaient creusés les serviteurs de son père Abraham, et que, celui-ci mort, les Philistins avaient anciennement comblés; et il les appela des mêmes noms dont auparavant son père les avait nommés.
19 Izhaks seruantes then digged in the valley, and found there a well of liuing water.
Ils creusèrent aussi dans le torrent, et ils trouvèrent de l’eau vive.
20 But the herdmen of Gerar did striue with Izhaks herdmen, saying, The water is ours: therefore called he the name of the well Esek, because they were at strife with him.
Mais là aussi les pasteurs de Gérara firent une querelle aux pasteurs d’Isaac, disant: L’eau est à nous; c’est pourquoi, il donna à ce puits, à cause de ce qui était arrivé, le nom de Calomnie.
21 Afterwarde they digged another well, and stroue for that also, and he called the name of it Sitnah.
Or ils creusèrent un autre puits: et pour celui-là aussi ils se querellèrent, et il l’appela Inimitiés.
22 Then he remoued thence, and digged an other well, for the which they stroue not: therefore called hee the name of it Rehoboth, and sayde, Because the Lord hath nowe made vs roome, we shall increase vpon the earth.
Parti de là, il creusa un autre puits, pour lequel ils ne se disputèrent point, et il l’appela du nom d’Etendue, disant: Maintenant le Seigneur nous a donné de l’étendue et nous a fait croître sur la terre,
23 So he went vp thence to Beer-sheba.
Puis il monta de ce lieu à Bersabée,
24 And the Lord appeared vnto him the same night, and sayde, I am the God of Abraham thy father: feare not, for I am with thee, and wil blesse thee, and will multiplie thy seede for my seruant Abrahams sake.
Où lui apparut le Seigneur cette nuit-là même, disant: Je suis le Dieu d’Abraham ton père; ne crains pas, parce que je suis avec toi: je te bénirai, et je multiplierai ta postérité à cause de mon serviteur Abraham.
25 Then he builte an altar there, and called vpon the Name of the Lord, and there spred his tent: where also Izhaks seruauntes digged a well.
C’est pourquoi il bâtit là un autel: puis, le nom du Seigneur invoqué, il dressa sa tente, et ordonna à ses serviteurs de creuser un puits.
26 Then came Abimelech to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friendes, and Phichol the captaine of his armie.
Comme en ce lieu vinrent de Gérara, Abimélech, Ochozath son ami, et Phicol chef de ses soldats.
27 To whom Izhak sayd, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate mee and haue put mee away from you?
Isaac leur demanda: Pourquoi venez-vous vers moi, homme que vous haïssez, et que vous avez chassé d’auprès de vous?
28 Who answered, Wee sawe certainely that the Lord was with thee, and wee thought thus, Let there be nowe an othe betweene vs, euen betweene vs and thee, and let vs make a couenant with thee.
Ils répondirent: Nous avons vu qu’avec toi était le Seigneur, et c’est pourquoi nous avons dit: Qu’il y ait serment entre nous, et faisons alliance,
29 If thou shalt do vs no hurt, as we haue not touched thee, and as we haue done vnto thee nothing but good, and sent thee away in peace: thou nowe, the blessed of the Lord, doe this.
Afin que tu ne nous fasses aucun mal, comme nous-mêmes, nous n’avons touché à rien de ce qui est à toi, et nous n’avons rien fait qui t’offensât; mais nous t’avons renvoyé en paix, comblé de la bénédiction du Seigneur.
30 Then hee made them a feast, and they dyd eate and drinke.
Isaac donc leur fit un festin: et après qu’ils eurent mangé et bu,
31 And they rose vp betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: then Izhak let them go, and they departed from him in peace.
Se levant le matin, ils firent serment de part et d’autre; ensuite Isaac les envoya paisiblement chez eux.
32 And that same day Izhaks seruantes came and tolde him of a well, which they had digged, and said vnto him, We haue found water.
Mais voilà que vinrent en ce jour-là même les serviteurs d’Isaac, lui apportant des nouvelles du puits qu’ils avaient creusé, et disant: Nous avons trouvé de l’eau.
33 So hee called it Shibah: therefore the name of the citie is called Beer-sheba vnto this day.
D’où il l’appela Abondance: et à la ville on a imposé le nom de Bersabée jusqu’au présent jour.
34 Nowe when Esau was fourtie yeere olde, he tooke to wife Iudith, the daughter of Beeri an Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon an Hittite also.
Quant à Esaü, quadragénaire, il prit pour femmes Judith, fille de Béeri l’Hétéen, et Basemath, fille d’Elon, du même lieu;
35 And they were a griefe of minde to Izhak and to Rebekah.
Qui toutes deux avaient irrité l’esprit d’Isaac et de Rébecca.
