Ezekiel 31

1 And in the eleuenth yeere, in the third moneth, and in the first day of the moneth the worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying,

La onzième année, au troisième mois, le premier du mois, la parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes:

2 Sonne of man, speake vnto Pharaoh King of Egypt, and to his multitude, Whom art thou like in thy greatnesse?

« Fils de l’homme, dis à Pharaon, roi d’Égypte, et à sa multitude: A qui ressembles-tu dans ta grandeur?

3 Beholde, Asshur was like a cedar in Lebanon with faire branches, and with thicke shadowing boughes, and shot vp very hye, and his toppe was among the thicke boughes.

Voilà qu’Assur était un cèdre sur le Liban, à la belle ramure, à l’ombrage épais, à la taille élevée, et ayant sa cime dans les nues.

4 The waters nourished him, and the deepe exalted him on hie with her riuers running round about his plants, and sent out her litle riuers vnto all the trees of the fielde.

Les eaux l’avaient fait croître, l’abîme l’avait fait grandir, en faisant couler ses fleuves autour du lieu où il était planté et en envoyant ses ruisseaux à tous les arbres des champs.

5 Therefore his height was exalted aboue all the trees of the fielde, and his boughes were multiplied, and his branches were long, because of the multitude of the waters, which the deepe sent out.

C’est pourquoi sa taille s’élevait, plus haute que les arbres des champs; ses branches avaient grandi, ses rameaux s’étaient allongés, grâce aux eaux abondantes du temps de sa croissance.

6 All the foules of the heauen made their nestes in his boughes, and vnder his branches did all the beastes of the fielde bring foorth their yong, and vnder his shadowe dwelt all mightie nations.

Dans ses branches tous les oiseaux du ciel nichaient; sous ses rameaux mettaient bas tous les animaux des champs, et à son ombre étaient assises des nations nombreuses.

7 Thus was he faire in his greatnesse, and in the length of his branches: for his roote was neere great waters.

Il était beau par sa grandeur, par la longueur de ses branches, car ses racines plongeaient dans des eaux abondantes.

8 The cedars in the garden of God coulde not hide him: no firre tree was like his branches, and the chessenut trees were not like his boughes: all the trees in the garden of God were not like vnto him in his beautie.

Les cèdres ne l’obscurcissaient pas dans le jardin de Dieu, les cyprès n’égalaient pas ses branches, et les platanes n’étaient pas comme ses rameaux; aucun arbre dans le jardin de Dieu ne l’égalait en beauté.

9 I made him faire by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, enuied him.

Je l’avais rendu beau par la multitude de ses rameaux; tous les arbres d’Eden lui portaient envie, tous ceux qui sont dans le jardin de Dieu.

10 Therefore thus sayeth the Lord God, Because he is lift vp on high, and hath shot vp his toppe among the thicke boughes, and his heart is lift vp in his height,

C’est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahweh: Parce qu’il s’est élevé en hauteur, parce qu’il a porté sa cime jusque dans les nues; et que son cœur s’est enorgueilli de son élévation,

11 I haue therefore deliuered him into the handes of the mightiest among the heathen: he shall handle him, for I haue cast him away for his wickednesse.

je l’ai livré aux mains du dieu des nations, qui le traitera à sa guise; à cause de sa méchanceté, je l’ai chassé.

12 And the strangers haue destroyed him, euen the terrible nations, and they haue left him vpon the mountaines, and in all the valleis his branches are fallen, and his boughes are broken by all the riuers of the land: and all the people of the earth are departed from his shadowe, and haue forsaken him.

Des étrangers l’ont coupé, — nation féroce entre toutes, — et laissé là; sur les montagnes et dans toutes les vallées, ses branches sont tombées; ses rameaux brisés gisent dans tous les ravins du pays; tous les peuples de la terre se sont éloignés de son ombre et l’ont abandonné.

13 Vpon his ruine shall all the foules of the heauen remaine, and all the beastes of the fielde shall be vpon his branches,

Sur ses débris tous les oiseaux du ciel viennent se poser, et dans ses rameaux se sont retirés tous les animaux des champs:

14 So that none of all the trees by the waters shalbe exalted by their height, neither shall shoote vp their toppe among the thicke boughes, neither shall their leaues stand vp in their height, which drinke so much water: for they are all deliuered vnto death in the nether partes of the earth in the middes of the children of men among them that goe downe to the pit.

afin qu’aucun arbre planté sur les eaux ne s’élève en hauteur et ne porte sa cime jusque dans les nues, et qu’aucun de ceux qui s’abreuvent d’eau ne s’appuie sur lui-même dans son orgueil. Car ils sont tous voués à la mort, aux profondeurs de la terre, mêlés aux enfants des hommes, à ceux qui descendent dans la fosse.

15 Thus saith the Lord God, In the day when he went downe to hell, I caused them to mourne, and I couered the deepe for him, and I did restreine the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: I caused Lebanon to mourne for him, and all the trees of the fielde fainted. (Sheol h7585)

Ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahweh: Le jour où il descendit au schéol, j’ai fait mener le deuil; à cause de lui j’ai voilé l’abîme, j’ai retenu le cours de ses fleuves, et les grandes eaux se sont arrêtées; à cause de lui, j’ai assombri le Liban, et à cause de lui, tous les arbres des champs ont langui. 16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him downe to hell with them that descend into the pit, and all the excellent trees of Eden, and the best of Lebanon: euen all that are nourished with waters, shall be comforted in the nether partes of the earth. (Sheol h7585)

Au bruit de sa chute, j’ai fait trembler les nations, quand je l’ai fait descendre au schéol, avec ceux qui descendent dans la fosse. Ils se sont consolés dans les profondeurs de la terre, tous les arbres d’Eden, les plus beaux et les plus magnifiques du Liban, tous ceux que les eaux abreuvaient. (Sheol h7585)

17 They also went downe to hell with him vnto them that be slaine with the sworde, and his arme, and they that dwelt vnder his shadowe in the middes of the heathen. (Sheol h7585)

Ceux-là aussi sont descendus avec lui au schéol, vers les victimes de l’épée, qui étaient son bras et étaient assises à son ombre au milieu des nations. (Sheol h7585)

18 To whom art thou thus like in glorie and in greatnesse among the trees of Eden? yet thou shalt be cast downe with the trees of Eden vnto the nether partes of the earth: thou shalt sleepe in the middes of the vncircumcised, with them that be slaine by the sworde: this is Pharaoh and all his multitude, sayth the Lord God.

Ainsi à qui ressembles-tu en gloire et en grandeur, parmi les arbres d’Eden? Tu seras précipité avec les arbres d’Eden, dans les profondeurs de la terre, pour être couché au milieu d’incirconcis, avec ceux que l’épée a transpercés. Tel sera le sort de Pharaon et de toute sa multitude; — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh. »
