Deuteronomy 24

1 When a man taketh a wife, and marrieth her, if so be shee finde no fauour in his eyes, because hee hath espyed some filthinesse in her, then let him write her a bill of diuorcement, and put it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

Lorsqu’un homme aura pris une femme et l’aura épousée, si elle vient à ne pas à trouver grâce à ses yeux, parce qu’il a découvert en elle quelque chose de repoussant, il écrira pour elle une lettre de divorce et, après la lui avoir remise en main, il la renverra de sa maison.

2 And when she is departed out of his house, and gone her way, and marrie with an other man,

Une fois sortie de chez lui, elle s’en ira et pourra devenir la femme d’un autre homme.

3 And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a letter of diuorcement, and put it in her hand, and send her out of his house, or if the latter man die which tooke her to wife:

Mais si ce dernier mari la prend en aversion, écrit pour elle une lettre de divorce, et que, la lui ayant remise en main, il la renvoie de sa maison; ou bien si ce dernier mari qui l’a prise pour femme vient à mourir,

4 Then her first husband, which sent her away, may not take her againe to be his wife, after that she is defiled: for that is abomination in the sight of the Lord, and thou shalt not cause the land to sinne, which the Lord thy God doeth giue thee to inherite.

alors le premier mari, qui l’a renvoyée, ne pourra pas la reprendre pour femme, après qu’elle a été souillée, car c’est une abomination devant Yahweh, et tu n’engageras pas dans le péché le pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne pour héritage.

5 When a man taketh a new wife, he shall not goe a warfare, neither shalbe charged with any businesse, but shalbe free at home one yeere, and reioyce with his wife which he hath taken.

Lorsqu’un homme sera nouvellement marié, il n’ira pas à l’armée, et on ne lui imposera aucune charge publique; il sera libre pour sa maison pendant un an, et il réjouira la femme qu’il a prise.

6 No man shall take the nether nor the vpper milstone to pledge: for this gage is his liuing.

On ne prendra pas en gage les deux meules, ni la meule de dessus: ce serait prendre en gage la vie même.

7 If any man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh marchandise of him, or selleth him, that thiefe shall die: so shalt thou put euil away from among you.

Si l’on trouve un homme qui ait enlevé l’un de ses frères, d’entre les enfants d’Israël, et en ait fait son esclave, ou l’ait vendu, ce ravisseur sera puni de mort. Tu ôteras ainsi le mal du milieu de toi.

8 Take heede of the plague of leprosie, that thou obserue diligently, and doe according to all that the Priestes of the Leuites shall teach you: take heede ye doe as I commanded them.

Prends garde à la plaie de la lèpre, observant avec soin et mettant en pratique tout ce que vous enseigneront les prêtres lévitiques; tout ce que je leur ai prescrit, vous le mettrez soigneusement en pratique.

9 Remember what the Lord thy God did vnto Miriam by the way after that ye were come out of Egypt.

Souviens-toi de ce que Yahweh, ton Dieu, a fait à Marie pendant le voyage, lors de votre sortie d’Égypte.

10 Whe thou shalt aske again of thy neighbour any thing lent, thou shalt not goe into his house to fet his pledge.

Si tu prêtes à ton prochain un objet quelconque, tu n’entreras pas dans sa maison pour prendre son gage;

11 But thou shalt stand without, and the man that borowed it of thee, shall bring the pledge out of the doores vnto thee.

tu attendras dehors, et celui à qui tu fais le prêt t’apportera le gage dehors.

12 Furthermore if it be a poore body, thou shalt not sleepe with his pledge,

Si cet homme est pauvre, tu ne te coucheras pas avec son gage;

13 But shalt restore him the pledge when the sunne goeth downe, that he may sleepe in his raiment, and blesse thee: and it shalbe righteousnesse vnto thee before the Lord thy God.

tu ne manqueras pas de lui rendre le gage au coucher du soleil, afin qu’il couche dans son vêtement et qu’il te bénisse, et ce sera là une justice pour toi devant Yahweh, ton Dieu.

14 Thou shalt not oppresse an hyred seruant that is needie and poore, neyther of thy brethren, nor of the stranger that is in thy land within thy gates.

Tu n’opprimeras pas le mercenaire pauvre et indigent, soit l’un de tes frères, soit l’un des étrangers demeurant dans ton pays, dans tes portes.

15 Thou shalt giue him his hire for his day, neither shall the sunne goe downe vpon it: for he is poore, and therewith susteineth his life: lest he crye against thee vnto the Lord, and it be sinne vnto thee.

Chaque jour tu lui donneras son salaire, sans que le soleil se couche sur cette dette; car il est pauvre, et son âme l’attend. Autrement il crierait à Yahweh contre toi, et tu serais chargé d’un péché.

16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children put to death for the fathers, but euery man shalbe put to death for his owne sinne.

Les pères ne seront pas mis à mort pour les enfants, et les enfants ne seront pas mis à mort pour les pères; chacun sera mis à mort pour son péché.

17 Thou shalt not peruert the right of the stranger, nor of the fatherlesse, nor take a widowes rayment to pledge.

Tu ne violeras pas le droit de l’étranger ni de l’orphelin, et tu ne prendras pas en gage le vêtement de la veuve.

18 But remember that thou wast a seruant in Egypt, and howe the Lord thy God deliuered thee thence. Therefore I commaund thee to doe this thing.

Tu te souviendras que tu as été esclave en Égypte, et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a délivré: c’est pourquoi je te commande d’agir en cette manière.

19 When thou cuttest downe thine haruest in thy fielde, and hast forgotten a sheafe in the fielde, thou shalt not goe againe to fet it, but it shalbe for the stranger, for the fatherles, and for the widowe: that the Lord thy God may blesse thee in all the workes of thine hands.

Quand tu feras ta moisson dans ton champ, si tu as oublié une gerbe dans le champ, tu ne retourneras pas pour la prendre: elle sera pour l’étranger, pour l’orphelin et pour la veuve, afin que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te bénisse dans tout le travail de tes mains.

20 When thou beatest thine oliue tree, thou shalt not goe ouer the boughes againe, but it shalbe for the stranger, for the fatherlesse, and for the widowe.

Quand tu secoueras tes oliviers, tu ne fouilleras pas après coup les branches: le reste sera pour l’étranger, pour l’orphelin et pour la veuve.

21 When thou gatherest thy vineyard, thou shalt not gather the grapes cleane after thee, but they shalbe for the stranger, for the fatherlesse, and for the widowe.

Quand tu vendangeras ta vigne, tu ne cueilleras pas après coup les grappes qui y seront restées: elles seront pour l’étranger, pour l’orphelin et pour la veuve.

22 And remember that thou wast a seruant in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to doe this thing.

Tu te souviendras que tu as été esclave dans le pays d’Égypte: c’est pourquoi je te commande d’agir en cette manière.
