Deuteronomy 19

1 When the Lord thy God shall roote out the nations, whose lande the Lord thy God giueth thee, and thou shalt possesse them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses,

Wenn Jahwe, dein Gott, die Völker ausrottet, deren Land dir Jahwe, dein Gott, verleiht, und du sie vertrieben und in ihren Städten und Häusern Wohnung genommen hast,

2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the middes of thy lande which the Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.

sollst du dir in deinem Lande, das dir Jahwe, dein Gott, zum Besitze giebt, drei Städte aussondern.

3 Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and deuide the coastes of the land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, into three parts, that euery manslayer may flee thither.

Du hast dir den Weg dahin in stand zu setzen und das Gebiet deines Landes, das dich Jahwe, dein Gott, wird einnehmen lassen, in drei Kreise einzuteilen; und dies soll geschehen, damit jeder Totschläger sich dorthin flüchten könne.

4 This also is ye cause wherfore the manslayer shall flee thither, and liue: who so killeth his neighbor ignorantly, and hated him not in time passed:

Und zwar hat es folgende Bewandtnis mit dem Totschläger, der sich dorthin flüchten kann, um am Leben zu bleiben: Wer einen andern unversehens und ohne daß er ihm von früher her feind war, tötet,

5 As hee that goeth vnto the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand striketh with the axe to cut downe the tree, if the head slip from the helue, and hit his neighbour that he dieth, the same shall flee vnto one of the cities, and liue,

zum Beispiel, wenn einer mit seinem Nächsten in den Wald geht, um Holz zu fällen, und es holt seine Hand mit der Axt aus, um einen Baum zu fällen, und das Eisen fährt vom Stiel ab und trifft seinen Nächsten so, daß er stirbt, ein solcher mag sich in eine dieser Städte flüchten, um am Leben zu bleiben,

6 Least the auenger of the blood follow after the manslayer, while his heart is chafed, and ouertake him, because the way is long, and slaie him, although he be not worthy of death, because he hated him not in time passed.

damit nicht der Bluträcher, wenn er erhitzten Gemütes ist, dem Totschläger nachsetze und ihn, weil der Weg weit ist, einhole und totschlage, obschon er keineswegs des Todes schuldig ist, da er ihm nicht von früher her feind war.

7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt appoint out three cities for thee.

Deshalb gebe ich dir diesen Befehl: Du sollst dir drei Städte aussondern.

8 And when the Lord thy God enlargeth thy coastes (as he hath sworne vnto thy fathers) and giueth thee all the lande which he promised to giue vnto thy fathers,

Und wenn Jahwe, dein Gott, dein Gebiet so erweitert, wie er deinen Vätern geschworen hat, und dir das ganze Land giebt, dessen Verleihung er deinen Vätern verheißen hat,

9 (If thou keepe all these commandements to doe them, which I commaund thee this day: to wit, that thou loue the Lord thy God, and walke in his waies for euer) then shalt thou adde three cities moe for thee besides those three,

sofern du dir die Befolgung aller dieser Gebote, die ich dir heute gebe, angelegen sein lässest, indem du allezeit Jahwe, deinen Gott, liebst und in seinen Wegen wandelst, so sollst du zu diesen dreien noch drei Städte hinzufügen,

10 That innocent bloude be not shed within thy land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, lest bloud be vpon thee.

damit in deinem Lande, das dir Jahwe, dein Gott, zum Eigentume giebt, nicht das Blut eines Unschuldigen vergossen werde, und du so mit Blutschuld beladen werdest.

11 But if a man hate his neighbour, and lay waite for him, and rise against him, and smite any man that he die, and flee vnto any of these cities,

Wenn aber ein solcher in eine dieser Städte fliehen sollte, der aus Haß gegen seinen Nächsten diesem aufgelauert, ihn überfallen und ihn derart geschlagen hat, daß er starb,

12 Then the Elders of his citie shall send and set him thence, and deliuer him into the hands of the auenger of the blood, that he may die.

so sollen die Vorgesetzten seiner Stadt ihn von dort holen lassen und an den Bluträcher ausliefern, daß er sterbe.

13 Thine eye shall not spare him, but thou shalt put away the crie of innocent blood from Israel, that it may goe well with thee.

Du sollst nicht mitleidig auf ihn blicken, sondern sollst das Blut des Unschuldigen aus Israel hinwegtilgen, damit es dir wohl gehe.

14 Thou shalt not remooue thy neighbours marke, which they of olde time haue set in thine inheritance, that thou shalt inherite in the lande, which ye Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.

Verrücke nicht die Grenze deines Nachbarn, welche die Vorfahren gezogen haben, bei deinem Besitztume, das du in dem Lande, welches dir Jahwe, dein Gott, zum Eigentume giebt, bekommen wirst.

15 One witnes shall not rise against a man for any trespasse, or for any sinne, or for any fault that hee offendeth in, but at the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses shall the matter be stablished.

Ein einziger Zeuge soll gegen niemanden aufkommen, wenn es sich um irgend ein Verbrechen oder Vergehen - irgend eine Verfehlung, die einer begehen kann, - handelt; erst auf die Aussage von zwei oder von drei Zeugen hin soll eine Sache Giltigkeit haben.

16 If a false witnesse rise vp against a man to accuse him of trespasse,

Wenn gegen irgend wen ein frevelhafter Zeuge auftritt, um ihn einer Übertretung anzuklagen,

17 Then both the men which striue together, shall stand before ye Lord, euen before the Priests and the Iudges, which shall be in those daies,

so sollen sich die beiden Männer, die den Streit haben, vor Jahwe stellen, vor die Priester und die Richter, die zu jener Zeit vorhanden sein werden,

18 And the Iudges shall make diligent inquisition: and if the witnesse be found false, and hath giuen false witnes against his brother,

und die Richter sollen sorgfältig untersuchen, und stellt es sich heraus, daß der Zeuge ein lügenhafter Zeuge war, daß er Lügen gegen seinen Volksgenossen ausgesagt hat,

19 Then shall yee doe vnto him as hee had thought to doe vnto his brother: so thou shalt take euil away forth of the middes of thee.

so sollt ihr über ihn als Strafe verhängen, was er über seinen Volksgenossen zu bringen gedachte, und sollst so das Böse aus deiner Mitte hinwegtilgen.

20 And the rest shall heare this, and feare, and shall henceforth commit no more any such wickednes among you.

Und die Übrigen werden es vernehmen und sich fürchten und nicht wieder solcherlei Böses in deiner Mitte verüben.

21 Therefore thine eye shall have no compassion, but life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foote for foote.

Dein Auge soll kein Erbarmen kennen: Leben um Leben, Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn, Hand um Hand, Fuß um Fuß!
