Amos 8

1 Thus hath the Lord God shewed vnto me, and behold, a basket of summer fruite.

Voici ce que m’a montré le Seigneur Dieu; or voici un crochet pour abattre des fruits.

2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I sayd, A basket of sommer fruite. Then sayd the Lord vnto me, The ende is come vpon my people of Israel, I wil passe by them no more.

Et il dit: Que vois-tu, Amos? Et je dis: Un crochet pour abattre des fruits. Et le Seigneur me dit: Elle est venue, la fin pour mon peuple d’Israël; je ne le traverserai plus à l’avenir.

3 And the songs of the Temple shalbe howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: many dead bodies shalbe in euery place: they shall cast them forth with silence.

Et les gonds du temple retentiront en ce jour-là, dit le Seigneur Dieu; beaucoup mourront; en tout lieu régnera le silence.

4 Heare this, O yee that swallowe vp the poore, that ye may make the needie of the lande to fayle,

Ecoutez ceci, vous qui écrasez le pauvre, et qui faites défaillir les indigents de la terre,

5 Saying, When will the newe moneth bee gone, that we may sell corne? and the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheate, and make the Ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifie the weights by deceit?

Disant: Quand sera passé le mois, alors nous vendrons nos marchandises; et quand sera passé le Sabbat, alors nous ouvrirons nos greniers de blé, afin que nous diminuions la mesure, et que nous augmentions le sicle, et que nous substituions des balances trompeuses,

6 That we may buy the poore for siluer, and the needie for shooes: yea, and sell the refuse of the wheate.

Afin d’avoir en notre possession, pour de l’argent, des indigents et des pauvres, pour des chaussures, et que nous vendions le rebut du blé.

7 The Lord hath sworne by the excellencie of Iaakob, Surely I will neuer forget any of their workes.

Le Seigneur a juré contre l’orgueil de Jacob: Si j’oublierai jamais aucune de leurs œuvres.

8 Shall not the lande tremble for this, and euery one mourne, that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise vp wholy as a flood, and it shall bee cast out, and drowned as by the flood of Egypt.

Est-ce que sur cela la terre ne sera pas ébranlée, et que tous ses habitants ne seront pas dans le deuil? et que tous entièrement ne monteront pas comme le fleuve, et qu’ils ne seront pas chassés, et qu’ils ne s’écouleront pas comme le fleuve d’Egypte?

9 And in that day, saith the Lord God, I will euen cause the sunne to go downe at noone: and I will darken the earth in the cleare day.

Et il arrivera en ce jour-là, dit le Seigneur Dieu, que le soleil se couchera à midi, et je ferai que la terre se couvrira de ténèbres en un jour de lumière.

10 And I will turne your feastes into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation: and I will bring sackcloth vpon all loynes, and baldnes vpon euery head: and I will make it as the mourning of an onely sonne, and the ende thereof as a bitter day.

Et je convertirai vos fêtes en deuil, et tous vos cantiques en lamentations; et je mettrai sur tous vos reins un cilice, et sur toutes vos têtes la calvitie; et je plongerai Israël dans le deuil, comme à la mort d’un fils unique, et ses derniers moments seront comme un jour amer.

11 Beholde, the dayes come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the lande, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord.

Voilà que des jours viennent, dit le Seigneur, et j’enverrai la faim sur la terre, non la faim du pain, ni la soif de l’eau, mais d’entendre la parole du Seigneur.

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the North euen vnto the East shall they run to and from to seeke the worde of the Lord, and shall not finde it.

Et ils seront dans le trouble depuis une mer jusqu’à l’autre, et depuis l’aquilon jusqu’à l’orient; ils iront de tous côtés, cherchant la parole du Seigneur, et ils ne la trouveront pas.

13 In that day shall the faire virgines and the yong men perish for thirst.

En ce jour-là, les vierges dans leur beauté et les jeunes hommes défaudront par la soif.

14 They that sweare by the sinne of Samaria, and that say, Thy God, O Dan, liueth, and the maner of Beer-sheba liueth, euen they shall fall, and neuer rise vp againe.

Ceux qui jurent par le péché de Samarie et disent: Il vit, ton Dieu, Dan! et elle vit, la voie de Bersabée! tomberont et ne se relèveront plus.
