< Psalms 83 >

1 A song. A psalm of Asaph. God, please do not stay silent! You can't remain unmoved! God, you must not keep quiet!
A Canticle Psalm of Asaph. O God, who will ever be like you? Do not be silent, and do not be unmoved, O God.
2 Can't you hear the roars of your enemies? Can't you see how those who hate you are defiantly lifting up their heads?
For behold, your enemies have sounded off, and those who hate you have carried out a head.
3 They invent cunning plans to conspire against your people; they plot against those you treasure.
They have acted with malice in counsel over your people, and they have plotted against your holy ones.
4 They say, “Come on! Let's destroy them as a nation so the name ‘Israel’ will be completely forgotten.”
They have said, “Come, let us scatter them from the nations and not allow the name of Israel to be remembered any longer.”
5 They all agree in their conspiracy; they've made a treaty together to attack you—
For they plotted unanimously. Joined together against you, they ordained a covenant:
6 the people of Edom, the Ishmaelites, Moab, and the Hagirites;
the tabernacle of Edomites and Ishmaelites, and Moab and the Hagarites,
7 the people of Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, and the inhabitants of Tyre.
and Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek, the foreigners among the inhabitants of Tyre.
8 Assyria too has joined them, allied with the descendants of Lot. (Selah)
For even Assur comes with them. They have become the helpers of the sons of Lot.
9 Do to them what you did to Midian, what you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River.
Do to them as you did to Midian and Sisera, just as to Jabin at the torrent of Kishon.
10 They were destroyed at Endor and became like manure to fertilize the ground.
They perished at Endor, and they became like the dung of the earth.
11 Make their leaders like Oreb and Zeeb; all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna,
Set their leaders to be like Oreb and Zeeb, and Zebah and Zalmunna: all their leaders
12 for they said, “Let's take the pastures of God for ourselves!”
who said, “Let us possess the Sanctuary of God for an inheritance.”
13 My God, make them like whirling tumbleweeds, chaff blown away by the wind.
My God, set them like a wheel, and like stubble before the face of the wind.
14 Just like fire that burns the forest, a flame that sets fire to the mountains,
Set them like a fire burning up the forest, and like a flame burning up the mountains.
15 in the same way chase them down with your storm, terrify them with your whirlwind.
So will you pursue them in your tempest, and disturb them in your wrath.
16 Shame them in defeat so that they come to you, Lord!
Fill their faces with shame, and they will seek your name, O Lord.
17 Make them ashamed, terrify them forever so that they die in disgrace.
Let them be ashamed and troubled, from age to age, and let them be confounded and perish.
18 Let them understand that you alone, called the Lord, are the Most High who rules over all the earth.
And let them know that the Lord is your name. You alone are the Most High in all the earth.
