< Matthew 23 >

1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and his disciples:
To pacoengah Jesu mah angpop kaminawk hoi a hnukbang kaminawk khaeah hae tiah lokthuih pae,
2 “The religious teachers and the Pharisees are responsible as interpreters of the law of Moses,
ca tarik kami hoi Farasinawk loe Mosi ih tangkhang nuiah anghnut o:
3 so obey them and do everything they tell you. But don't follow what they do, because they don't practice what they preach.
to pongah nihcae mah thuih ih lok to pazui o boih ah loe, sah pae oh; toe nihcae mah sak ih hmuen baktiah sah o hmah: nihcae loe a thuih o ih lok baktiah, sah o ai.
4 They tie up heavy burdens, and place them on people's shoulders, but they themselves don't lift a finger to help them.
Nihcae loe phawh thai ai ih hmuenzit hoiah taoengh o moe, minawk ih palaeng ah a koeng pae o; toe angmacae loe to hmuennawk to banpazung hoiah tahruet han mataeng doeh koeh o ai.
5 Everything they do is to make sure they get noticed. They make themselves large prayer boxes to wear and long tassels on their clothes.
Nihcae mah sak ih hmuennawk boih loe kaminawk mah hnuk han ih ni sak o: nihcae loe ban ah zaeng ih hmuen to kalen ah sak o moe, kahni atom to kasawkah pakhrak o,
6 They love to have the places of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues.
buh raenghaih poihkung ah anghnuthaih hmuensang to koeh o moe, synagogue ah kasang koek anghnuthaih ahmuen to a koeh o,
7 They love to be greeted with respect in the market places, and for people to call them, ‘Rabbi.’
hmuenmae zawhhaih ahmuen ah minawk mah saiqat paekhaih, Rabbi, Rabbi, tiah kaminawk mah kawkhaih to a koeh o.
8 Don't let people call you ‘Rabbi.’ Only one is your Master Teacher, and you are all brothers.
Toe nangcae loe Rabbi, tiah kawk o hmah, nangcae loe Patukkung, Kri khue ni na tawnh o; nangcae loe nawkamya ah ni na oh o boih.
9 Don't call anyone by the title ‘Father’ here on earth. Only one is your Father, who is in heaven.
Long nuiah mi kawbaktih doeh pa, tiah kawk o hmah: nangcae loe van ah kaom, nam Pa maeto khue ni na tawnh o.
10 Don't let people call you ‘Teacher.’ Only one is your Teacher, the Messiah.
Patukkung, tiah na kawk o hanah, Patukkung maeto khue ni na tawnh o: anih loe Kri ni.
11 The greatest among you will be your servant.
Nangcae thung ih kalen koek kami loe nangcae ih tamna ah oh han angaih.
12 Those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.
Mi kawbaktih doeh angmah hoi angmah to amkoeh kami loe, pahnaem tathuk ah om tih; mi kawbaktih doeh poek pahnaem kami loe pakoehhaih om tih.
13 But what a disaster is coming on you, religious teachers and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You slam shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. You yourselves don't go in, yet you don't let anyone in who is trying to enter.
Nangcae angsah thaih, Farasi hoi ca tarik kaminawk, khosak na bing o! Kaminawk hanah siangpahrang ah uk ih van prae to na khah pae o khoep: nangmacae doeh na kun o ai, a thungah akun koeh kaminawk doeh na pakaa o.
Nangcae angsah thaih, Farasi hoi ca tarik kaminawk, khosak na bing o! Lamhmainawk ih im to na taek o moe, angsakhaih hoiah kasawkah lawk na thuih o: to pongah kalen aep danpaekhaih to na hnu o tih.
15 What a disaster is coming on you, religious teachers and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you travel over land and sea to make a single convert, and when you do, you make him twice a son of darkness as you are yourselves. (Geenna g1067)
Nangcae angsah thaih, Farasi hoi ca tarik kaminawk, khosak na bing o! Kami maeto amkhraisak hanah tuipui hoi saoeng to na takui o moe, kami to na hnuk o naah, anih to nangmacae pong alet hnetto kamtlai ah hell ih caa ah nang coeng o sak. (Geenna g1067)
16 What a disaster is coming on those of you who say, ‘If you swear by the Temple that doesn't count, but if you swear by the gold of the Temple, then you have to keep your oath.’ How foolish and blind you are!
Nangcae mikmaeng zaehoikungnawk, khosak na bing o! Nangcae mah mi kawbaktih doeh tempul hoi lokkamhaih sah kami loe kawbangah doeh om mak ai; toe tempul thung ih sui hoiah lokkamhaih sah kami loe, a lokkamhaih to caksak poe han oh, tiah na thuih o.
17 What is greater—the gold, or the Temple that makes the gold holy?
Nangcae mikmaeng hoi amthu kaminawk: sui maw kalen kue, to tih ai boeh loe sui ciimsakkung tempul?
18 You say, ‘If you swear on the altar that doesn't count, but if you swear on the sacrifice that's on the altar, then you have to keep your oath.’
Mi kawbaktih doeh hmaicam hoi lokkamhaih sah kami loe, kawbangah doeh om mak ai, toe hmaicam nui ih tangqum hoiah lokkamhaih sah kami loe sak pazaehaih a tawnh, tiah na thuih o.
19 How blind you are! What is greater—the sacrifice, or the altar that makes the sacrifice holy?
Nangcae mikmaeng hoi amthu kaminawk: tangqum maw kalen kue, to tih ai boeh loe tangqum ciimsakkung hmaicam?
20 If you swear by the altar, you swear by it and by everything that's on it.
To pongah mi kawbaktih doeh hmaicam hoi lokkamhaih sah kami loe hmaicam hoi a nuiah kaom hmuen boih hoi lokkamhaih sak ah ni oh boeh.
21 If you swear by the Temple you swear by it and by the one who lives there.
Mi kawbaktih doeh tempul hoi lokkamhaih sah kami loe tempul thungah kaom kami hoiah lokkamhaih sak ah ni oh boeh.
22 If you swear by heaven you swear by the throne of God and the one who sits there.
Mi kawbaktih doeh van hoi lokkamhaih sah kami loe, Sithaw ih angraeng tangkhang hoi a nuiah anghnu kami hoiah lokkamhaih sak ah ni oh boeh.
23 What a disaster is coming on you, religious teachers and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay a tithe of mint, aniseed, and cumin, but you neglect the vital aspects of the law—doing good, showing mercy, exercising trust. Yes, you should pay your tithe, but don't forget these other things.
Nangcae angsah cop thaih, ca tarik kami hoi Farasinawk, khosak na bing o! Nangcae loe cungpram, hmuihoih aan hoi cungsimnawk to haato thungah maeto na paek o, toe kaalok thungah kaom katoeng lokcaekhaih, kami tahmenhaih hoi tanghaih to tiah doeh na poek o ai: kalah hmuennawk to pahnawt sut ai ah, lokpui parai hmuennawk doeh na sak o han angaih.
24 You blind guides—you strain what you drink to keep out a fly but then you swallow a camel!
Nangcae mikmaeng zaehoikungnawk, taksae maeto doeh oh han ai ah tui to na pacii o, toe kaengkuu hrang maeto na pa-aeh o lat.
25 What a disaster is coming on you, religious teachers and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside you're full of greed and self-indulgence.
Nangcae angsah cop, ca tarik kami hoi Farasi kaminawk, khosak na bing o! Boengloeng hoi sabaenawk to anui bang kaciim ah na pasaeh o, toe athung bangah loe kami lomhhaih hoi kamtlai koeh hmoekhaih hoiah koi.
26 You blind Pharisees! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, so that the outside will also be clean.
Farasi mikmaengnawk, boengloeng hoi sabae to a thung bangah pasae o hmaloe ah, to tiah ni anui bang doeh ciim thai tih.
27 What a disaster is coming on you, religious teachers and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like white-washed tombs, looking good on the outside, but on the inside full of skeletons and all kinds of rottenness.
Nangcae angsah cop thaih, ca tarik kami hoi Farasinawk, khosak na bing o! Nangcae loe anui bang hoi khet kahoih ah rong kanglung hoi nok moe, athung bangah loe kadueh kaminawk ih ahuh, kaciim ai hmuennawk hoiah kakoi taprong hoiah ni anghmong.
28 You're just the same. On the outside you look like good people to others, but on the inside you're full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
To baktih toengah nangcae doeh tasa bang hoiah loe kaminawk hma ah katoeng kami baktiah amtueng, toe a thung bangah loe angsak cophaih, zaehaih hoiah ni na koi o.
29 What a disaster is coming on you, religious teachers and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs as memorials to the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the good,
Nangcae angsah cop thaih, ca tarik kami hoi Farasinawk, khosak na bing o! Nangcae loe tahmaanawk ih taprong to na sak o moe, katoeng kaminawk ih taprong to na sak pathoep o,
30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the times of our ancestors we would not have joined them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
kaicae loe kaimacae ampanawk ih adung ah kho ka sak o langlacadoeh, tahmaanawk athii palong kaminawk khaeah ka thum o mak ai, tiah na thuih o.
31 But by saying this you testify against yourselves, proving that you belong to those who murdered the prophets!
Nangcae loe tahmaanawk hum kaminawk ih caa ah na oh o, tiah nangmacae hoi nangmacae to hnukung ah na oh o.
32 So get on with it—finish it all off using your forefathers' methods!
Nam panawk khosakhaih tuinuen to koi o sak ngala khae.
33 You snakes, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of condemnation? (Geenna g1067)
Nangcae pahuinawk, nangcae pahui ih caanawk, kawbangmaw hell thung hoiah na loih o thai tih? (Geenna g1067)
34 That's why I'm sending you prophets, wise men, and teachers. Some of them you will kill, some of them you will crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues, hunting them from town to town.
To pongah khenah, Tahmaanawk, palungha kaminawk hoi ca tarik kaminawk to nangcae khaeah kang patoeh: thoemto kaminawk to na hum o ueloe, thinglam pongah na takhing o tih; thoemto kaminawk loe sineko ah na bop o ueloe, vangpui maeto pacoeng maeto ah na pacaektlaek o tih:
35 As a result, you will be held accountable for the blood of all the good people that has been poured out on the land—from the blood of Abel, who did what was right, to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the Temple and the altar.
tempul hoi hmaicam salakah na hum o ih, katoeng kami Abel hoi Barakiah capa, Zakariah karoek to long nuiah kalong katoeng kaminawk boih ih athii loe nangcae nuiah om tih.
36 I'm telling you, the consequences of all this will fall on this generation.
Loktang kang thuih o, hae hmuennawk boih loe hae adung ih kaminawk nuiah pha tih.
37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! So often I wanted to gather your children as a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wings—but you wouldn't let me.
Aw Jerusalem, Jerusalem, tahmaanawk humkung hoi nang khaeah patoeh ih kaminawk thlung hoiah vakung, aa amno mah a caanawk pakhraeh tlim ah tapop baktih toengah, na caanawk nawnto tapop hanah vai nazetto maw koehhaih ka tawnh boeh, toe nang mah na koeh ai!
38 Now look—your house is left abandoned, totally empty.
Khenah, na im loe angqai krang ah ni oh sut boeh.
39 I tell you this: you won't see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Kang thuih o, Angraeng ih ahmin hoi angzo kami loe tahamhoih, tiah na thui o ai karoek to, vaihi hoi kamgtong kai nang hnuh o mak ai boeh, tiah a naa.
